Portsmouth Boss Appleton Confirms Bid Turned Down
Portsmouth Boss Appleton Confirms Bid Turned Down
Thursday, 19th Jan 2012 11:17

Portsmouth boss Michael Appleton has confirmed that Pompey have turned down the Blues’ offer for Joel Ward (left) and Jason Pearce. He says the duo, who TWTD revealed were Town’s targets on Tuesday, are players who will play a big part in his future.

Appleton told the Portsmouth News: “I am aware a bid has gone in for Joel and Jason but it is a million miles away from their true value to us. I don’t think there was much of a discussion. It has been turned down and that’s where I am with that.

“If Ipswich want to continue and look to pursue that further it is down to them. But as far as we are concerned we want young, talented footballers such as Joel and Jason at this club. If I am given the opportunity, Jason and Joel will play a big part in our future.”

Former Preston and West Brom midfielder Appleton says he’s not been told that he has to sell players despite Pompey’s ongoing financial uncertainty and is looking to add to, not cash-in on his players: “I want to strengthen this squad, the last thing I want to do is sell players like that. No way.

“That is how it stands today — until somebody tells me differently tomorrow. Ipswich’s offer was not acceptable and we move on.”

Town are unlikely to end their interest at their initial undisclosed offer - believed to be £1 million - with a further bid likely in the days to come.

Looks like all potential transfer targets rebuffed, back to ground zero PJ. What's next??? Anymore false hopes for us???

Come on Cleggy. Keep upping the bid. Just think. . . If these are the players who can help get us to the play-off positions, big money could follow. . . Speculate to accumulate. By the way. . . is Jo Whight still about?

Can't blame Jewell for that, put a bid in and it was declined! There is still hope! Let's see what his plan is now, if he really wants these guys then he will go back in with more.

Usual posturing - never accept the first offer, talk the players up, second offer received and accepted, hello new young players.

Job done

Standard response. Increase to £1.5million for the pair, or £2.5million, but they have to take Smith, Kennedy and Ellington off our hands

In other words Portsmouth want more money as they're still in bad financial state. If we're serious about signing players like these then Clegg will have to make the money available otherwise lets not waste our time as its embarrassing to fail once again. The window shuts in under 2 weeks so having acheived so little so far its about time PJ got his skates on unless of course he's relying on more loans!! I fear a relegation scrap coming up.

Stadiumofdark: Agree with u re kennedy & ellington. But i would hold onto smith. He is still young with alot to learn but could be a big player for us in the future given time.

So Pompey want more money....

I may well be a bit naive here but why all this messing around? Phone the club up and a/ask if the player is up for sale. If that club do not give a firm no then proceed to b/ and ask how much. After this go to c/ and make a sensible bid

If they say no to good sensible offers then just leave. For crying out loud we've had since the end of August to look at targets for this transfer window.

Its like if you really like a girl and you know she kinda likes you as well. You have two options either ask her out and risk her saying no or just differ and differ and not actually get anywhere.

Sorry for the rant but sometimes football clubs annoy me by all this continous messing around.

If they are that good then its money well spent go in for £3million offer them 3 year good contracts and we have 2 player for this so called bright future.

We have Imgarmarson and Priskins wages to play with plus O'Connor at the end of the season must be at least £25k a week we have saved

Exactly, if the scouts reckon they are good, then up the bid and get them. If they turn out to be rubbish, sack the scouts.

Anybody get that sinking feeling? I just don't see this happening!
I'll be mortified if we don't strenghen the back four in this transfer window.

I used to find the January transfer window quite exciting, but as a Town fan it is the most depressing month with constant links that never ever happen. why do other clubs seem to sign players easily yet it seems Clegg can't sign his own name let alone another clubs player?

Portsmouth Football Club is a joke and has been for the last few years and although it is not the fans fault (you have to feel sorry for them) I fear no deals can be done until their future is sorted i.e. a buyer with all the correct credentials or the Club being placed into administration. If the latter happens they will have to sell but somehow Portsmouth always seem to wriggle out of their obvious problems. Getting very concerend now that we still do not have a defence that will keep us up.

Why are we talking about 1m plus for these players? They are unproven second division players. 100K tops for each. If Robson were alive, he'd been turning in his grave at this nonsense.

Keaneish added 12:53 - Jan 19
Fifeblue - Jason Pearce was sold back to Pompey for anywhere up to 600,00k, unlikely he's going to go for anything less than that.
