Jewell Confirms Bids Turned Down
Jewell Confirms Bids Turned Down
Thursday, 19th Jan 2012 13:09

Blues boss Paul Jewell has confirmed that Town’s three bids — for Portsmouth pair Joel Ward and Jason Pearce and Crewe’s Nick Powell - have all been rejected. However, the Town manager says that that’s only to be expected with no club ever accepting a first offer.

Jewell said: “We’ve made offers and as far as I’m aware they’ve all been rejected. I’ve never been the manager of a club which has accepted a first bid, I’ve never known a first bid to be accepted by a selling club.”

While that appears to intimate that Jewell is keen to make further offers, he says owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg will now assess the financial side of the proposed moves: “I’ll let other people deal with that side of it. If we’re so far apart there’s no good wasting everybody’s time — ours, Portsmouth’s, the players’ — if a deal can’t be done.

"If there’s a deal to be done and we can do it, we’re interested. If not, we move on.”

The Town boss refused to confirm that the third bid was for Crewe’s Nick Powell with the Railwaymen, unlike Portsmouth, yet to comment: “It’s private. If clubs want to come out like Portsmouth have and say they’ve had bids rejected by Ipswich, that’s fair enough, but I don’t really want to comment on anyone else.”

As things stand, Jewell now doesn’t expect Leicester’s Sean St Ledger to join: “He played on Tuesday for Leicester against Forest in the FA Cup, so it looks like he might be in their plans.

“We thought we had something done last week but it hasn’t happened and for whatever reason that’s probably gone now.”

Jewell dismissed links with Swindon pair Matt Ritchie and Paul Caddis and ex-Blackpool midfielder Bojan Djordjic.

Town bid 1.3 million for Powell according to my contact at Crewe. They have been told to come back with a much imporved offer or look elsewhere.

Fair point regarding first offers but all you do by going in too low at the start is alert other clubs to the possible availability of players you are interested in.

There is a problem in my view with our transfer dealings overall and has been for a while now. To be fair to Jewell, Clegg and Evans are the common denominator!

Pay-up and get them in.

Presumably they had a discussion before they posted the first bid about how high they would go?

Trouble is, I can't imagine any of these lads are going to be champing at the bit to come here; if they're doing well, there will be better offers from clubs doing much better. Why join our shambles?

Gotta love how many experts we have among the fans in transfer policy and tactics.....Seems so many of you want t overbid on a player. Non of these players are on the transfer list so the clubs aren't going to make it easy by telling you how much they will take for them hoping you will overbid. So settle down and let see what happes ME knows how much he will dish out for each player...if it is not enough then move on....

....of course, apart from anyone who bids for our players, we take their arms off on their first bid....then repaint the turnstiles.

This is the most depressing transfer (rumour) window ever

If they would've accepted the first offer that would only mean we overpaid, which would piss everyone off too.

Here we go again! Just two transfer fees agreed all Summer and now this. What amazes me is other clubs manage to get deals done. If we go to Leeds with no fresh faces - heads should roll. This is completely unacceptable. I suspect Clegg offered peanuts - literally!

How long has Mark Hughes been at QPR and he has just had a bid for a Man City defender accepted and the lad is only 25.

Why does it take so long for us, some times you have to pay the price and not try to get everything on the cheap.

Agree.... it all boils down to clubs and more so agents knowing we have dosh and stringing us along... we have to expect to pull our finger out and anticipate this, come up with a offer that will not be beaten... if they dont like it move on and let them lose out

Quoted from the Times...

"Nedum Onuoha is another QPR target with the club preparing to offer the Manchester City defender, 25, more than £80,000 a week."

That may have something to do with it Karlos.

Stop pissing about and get these players in.it's all very tedious and a familiar story. Wake me up when we have actually signed someone. Get it done or we are going down! We should have gone for younger players at the start of the season,I'd rather be 4th from bottom with youngster who will improve and gell than with a bunch of hasbeens looking to see their careers out!
