Town Move for Five - Three From Pompey
Town Move for Five - Three From Pompey
Thursday, 26th Jan 2012 07:22

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that the Blues have lodged bids for five players, three understood to be from Portsmouth. The pursuit of Pompey pair Jason Pearce (pictured) and Joel Ward continues, with a third player also now targeted.

Jewell told the club site: “We are looking to improve the team and not just for this season but in seasons going on.

“We have offers in for five players. They are all players, young players, that are at an age that they can help take Ipswich Town on.

“We think the offers we have made are fair ones. Obviously we know the transfer deadline is approaching and we’d like to have some new faces here before the West Ham game but we will have to wait and see what happens.

“Signing a player now, any player, is so complicated — and so frustrating.”

The Blues are continuing to talk to Pompey about Pearce and Ward with the south coast side looking to raise cash to cover their unpaid PAYE bill.

A third Portsmouth player is being targeted with a bid for all three around the £2 million mark having been lodged since the second offer was turned down on Monday.

However, other clubs are also eyeing Portsmouth players and not every member of Michael Appleton's already very stretched squad will be for sale.

One of this morning’s tabloids links Fulham with a £500,000 move for Pompey’s 18-year-old Australian winger Ryan Williams, who would appear to very much fit the profile of the type of player Town are after, while Aston Villa are also claimed to be interested. Keeper Stephen Henderson has also been mentioned as a Newcastle target in recent weeks, while Hungarian striker Márkó Futács is another who could be attracting interest.

The Blues appear to have given up the chase for 17-year-old Powell having had their initial bid turned down, Jewell admitting that one of his proposed deals is “dead”.

Claims of Town interest in Michael Owen and ex-Blue Titus Bramble are somewhat unlikely, while Sheffield United full-back Matt Lowton is not believed to be amongst the five, despite continuing links with the 22-year-old, who was previously mentioned in connection with the Blues back in September.

This sounds promising but we have been excited about nothing before so who knows with Clegg running operations!

I am pleased that we are bidding, but what's the betting there will be a story in a couple of days that all five bids have been rejected?

Us ITFC fans badly need some good news, let's read about some signings soon please!

If we got the kid crewe, the Pompey keeper, Billy Sharp, plus the 2 nippers from Pompey then I'll have my belief back in Clegg. Trade any of those for Andrews and I'm still happy. I'm not a Jewell fan but he can't be blamed for the lack of signings as his only role is to identify targets. Clegg and Evans are both football novices and have cocked up on renewing contracts, on selling young talent, and on getting new players in. Now is the time to show some ambition but also some guile and get these deals done.

Why do we have to let every man and his dog know about our transfer dealings. This site is a major culprit. Let the world know when the deals are done, until then, please shut the f--- up.

And all of a sudden PJ will become a good manager overnight. He put the current team together and got us in this mess. He was the one who gave Ellington a 2 year deal.

for us to get one signing in is a miracle let alone 5 in the space of 5 days. Smacks of desperation and just remember Charlie austin last year.

Not being pessimistic, being realistic.

Sounds like my attempts at chatting up birds in night clubs- talk to loads of birds, make a bit of an approach on all of them and go home alone.
Maybe best to focus in on one- get the deal done early - if you are really lucky she will bring her mate along as well

...is like a football player saying - "Kicking a ball is so complicated and frustrating"...

How did you think sinking a team into the bottom four and trying to rebuild the squad overnight might be helpful? Make it more complicated, well yes you fool!

If you had managed the players even moderately well we would be near the playoffs and we would be in with a chance. This squad isn't the worst in this league. You are.

PJ you are the probem and it's so frustrating that you don't realise.

What a Load of rubbish! Just sign the Pompey pair how long will they drag it out for.
Surely put a 3rd offer in they can't refuse.

I will believe it when i see Five new players holding up an ITFC shirt for a photo shoot.
Bids don't mean anything! We can put a bid in for Messi and Rooney if we like.
We have all been here before as fans and been knocked down time after time!

Camblue

I dont think the football world are glued to TWTD to find out who is buying who.
£2 million for 3 players cant see that happen if we bid £1.6 for the 2 lads and that was turned down.
go in with £3 million and we might have a chance

Is the BBC are reporting that Portsmouth have someone intrested in the club again, wonder if that will be another twist in the saga.

Tevez is reported to have lost £9.3 million in lost wages by not playing and we are haggling for 3 players at £2 million, such a big gap between Prem and Championship,
And I thought we had a few quid.

£2 mill would probably get you Pearce alone, hes great and only gonna get better, he came through the youth ranks, speaks about the thrill of finally playing in front of the pompey fans and hes spoken of in very high regard by everyone connected to PFC, maybe more importantly hes not of the high wages like some who are still at the club and is supposed to be the future of our club. The same goes for Ward although he maybe needs a bit more fine tuning than Pearce, but he is a local lad and living his dream of playing for his childhood team, he still lives with his mum in the local area. The thing i hope gives us an edge to keeping hold of these 2, is the fact that they have an affinity to Pompey, enjoy their first team football here, are on low wages and are meant to be our future, and they know it. I just hope these derisory offers you are making are laughed out of the boardroom, but i suppose time will tell......we are after all hanging in there for our life.

If you get these 2/3 players for anywhere near these prices, ild be surprised if Appleton didnt walk.
