Appleton Has Still Only Spoken to Jewell
Appleton Has Still Only Spoken to Jewell
Monday, 30th Jan 2012 09:26

Portsmouth boss Michael Appleton says he’s still heard nothing from any manager other than Paul Jewell regarding his players and has had only one conversation with the Blues boss. However, it’s widely understood that discussions are continuing between Pompey and a number of clubs regarding the possible sale of a number of players.

In addition to Jason Pearce, Joel Ward and Stephen Henderson, who have been targeted by Town, Dave Kitson is interesting Brighton and Luke Varney has been linked with Wolves.

Appleton says he doesn’t know whether any of his players will be sold before Tuesday’s deadline: “If people decide they want to make a bid for our players it is up to them.

"I have had one conversation with Paul Jewell and that was after the initial bid for Jason Pearce and Joel Ward.

“We had a 10-minute chat and basically it was along the lines about it was not acceptable. I haven’t had a conversation with anyone associated with Ipswich Town since.

“I keep hearing about second and third bids but until someone rings me up from Ipswich Town Football Club and tells me they want to make a renewed interest in the two players then I will just carry on working with them.”

Speaking last week, Appleton admitted he hadn’t been officially informed who Town’s third target is and appears not to be being entirely kept in the loop.

Meanwhile, Leicester defender Sean St Ledger, who almost joined Town on loan with a view to a permanent deal earlier in the transfer window, says he’s now happy with life with the Foxes: "There was a point when I thought I was going out on loan to Ipswich and then the next moment I am playing in the FA Cup versus Forest.

"It has been an up-and-down time and I probably haven't known what was going on, but I am fully enjoying being back in the side, winning games and keeping clean sheets.”

This doesn't seem very positive... Unless Appleton is being kept out of the loop completely?

Please someone tell the truth. Quote from today's EADT.

Owner Marcus Evans was yesterday said to be directly involved in trying to wrap up a deal.

sounds like itfc need to be making a lot more noise about signing them as it needs to be accepted today so medical and personal terms can be agreed tomorrow.

Goodness, Mr. Appleton looks a bit scary to me. Wouldn't like to meet him on a dark night. It looks as if time is running out for us to sign these blokes. Let's hope Mr. Appleton is not involved and it is happening at chairman level. Would think that to be the case as Pompey would hardly have their football manager talking money the state they are in. Pompey's board of directors are staring down the barrel of a gun.

I would have to say Sindre94 there's a VERY high chance Appleton's being kept out of the loop with these Pompey deals. After all, Portsmouth aren't ezactly the club you would expect to do business conventionally!

Sorry Appleton but you're pretty much powerless when it comes to the financial well being and security if your football club. If you have more money offers for other players as well as Pearce, Ward and Henderson then you'll get some say on who you think you should keep and get rid of but I'd be surprised if kitsin or varney would raise enough between them to pay off the 1.6m.

I doubt Appleton would have a say in wether his players get sold or not at this moment of time, with the amount of uncertainty surrounding popmey.

It's the Administrators who need to do the deal.

If you want Leadbitter- this might sell him

If I'm a Portsmouth player i want out of the club, there is only a matter of time before you will go unpaid, lose 10 points etc etc- I am sure that the players are not saying any of this as it will effect their loyalty bonus if they leave.
God knows what is going on behind the scenes, but having gone this far into the transfer window it will be a bit humiliatiing if we do not get them.

It's all PR Bullpoop, most managers nowadays aren't directly involved with transfer negotiations and it depends how hand son the owner/chairman/ceo are as to how much input the manager has, I would imagine some managers have a more direct role but it seems that we're heading more towards the continental style of football club management when sometimes the people at the top have an agenda as to who they want playing at the club and the manager/head coach just gets given the players.
Either Appleton is one of those managers with no input at all on the transfer front or the Portsmouth board aren't telling him anything, although that's possibly because he went and blabbed to the press in the first place.

Time is ticking. SSL deal is dead - thank goodness - we don't want loans - but yet why would he or any other player want to join us on a long-term deal when we could be releagted AND when the player/agent fully expects PJ - who has delivered terrible results - to rightly be sacked?

According to radio Suffolk - even the Hearts guy has negotiated a deal until the end of the season (with option of an extention). If confirmed - then what does this say? Not confident we will survive?

PJ OUT!

Jas099 - you don't need to finish every post with PJ out, we all understand you don't want him to remain at the club. Every post doesn't need to be spun toward what a bad manager we have does it?

With Evans's public backing it'd be wrong for anyone to assume he's going to get sacked and with the abundance if activity by the whole back room staff and management, including the owner during this window I'd say there was a positive united front at Portman Road which is encouraging to see especially if all these deals come off.

Jas0999 continues to bad mouth Jewell at every opportunity about our awful position but yet we are still in a better position than either of Keanes start to his seasons in charge in the fact we were only 3 points from relegation after 27 games played 09/10 and 3 points off relegation when he was rightly sacked ,who Jas backed right to the end .
Hopefully Jewell will get his targets in (Pearce a player he wanted in the summer ,who has proved to be a very good signing for Pompey) and get rid of another two massive Keane flops in Leadbitter and Delaney £3.5 million well used Roy !!

JEWELL IN

There is a reason why no one other than PJ has spoken to Appleton, the players mentioned are rubbish. Otherwise more clubs would be in for them! This smacks of desperation from PJ.

Mr Appleton has talked to no other clubs yet Williams has signed for Fulham !!
I dont think your board are telling you everything Michael ?
Pompey have to sell or go out of business in Feb for second administration failing. If they survive they are likely to have a 27 point deduction may even keep us up
