Edwards Frustrated at Lack of New Deal
Edwards Frustrated at Lack of New Deal
Tuesday, 7th Feb 2012 10:29

Right-back Carlos Edwards is reported to be frustrated that Town are yet to offer him a new contract. The 33-year-old Trinidadian is one of 11 players whose terms are up at the end of the campaign*.

Speaking last week, manager Paul Jewell said he had held talks with the former Sunderland man and that he was OK with the situation: “I spoke to Carlos on Sunday and he’s quite happy to see how things go.

“He just wants to make sure we’re safe, we’re all right and we’ll have a chat nearer the date [of the end of his contract].”

However, a source close to the player is reported to have said that that’s far from the case with Edwards, who is keen to end his career with the Blues, wanting his future sorted but with the club yet to sit down to discuss new terms: “The manager keeps saying that he has concerns over Carlos’s age and weaknesses as a defender.

“Well, he has started all but one league game this season and not once been in the treatment room, while it’s the manager who is playing him at right-back.”

Edwards turned down a new two-year deal at the end of last season, which would have seen him take a 20 per cent cut in wages, instead choosing to trigger a one-year clause in his previous deal on the same salary. Fellow Trinidadian Jason Scotland has a similar clause in his contract which will be triggered after three more league starts.

The one-time Wrexham and Luton man is believed to have proposed a deal to the club which would see his basic wage reduced but with more significant appearance payments and the option of a second year if he makes 23 appearances during the first.

LA Galaxy’s reported interest in signing the right-back or right midfielder is said to have cooled but a number of Championship sides are believed to be eyeing his situation.

Meanwhile, Town’s reserves are in action in a behind-closed-doors friendly at home to Leyton Orient this afternoon.

Suspect defensively, not sure if he would get in the team if he wasn't playing rb because we have so many midfielders. Give him a year only.

There are a lot of players out there who are better than Edwards at RB or RW.

But there aren't any better Ipswich players for the RB position. So keep him onboard but buy somebody young and thirsty in the summer for the long-term.

good player but i just can't see him being offered a new contract as we all know we need a right back and we have a load of midfielders and carlos is 33 now.

I like Carlos as player always gives 100% and is very fit for his age and has never moaned about being played out of postion, but he is 33 and we need a new younger right back.
I would offer him 1 year as with only 5 subs allowed it is good to have a player who can play in several postions on the bench.

NEED to sign him up.

Who cares how old he is? You wouldn't know It by watching him play. If he's this fit and agile now I don't mind giving him another two years. You can use the age argument with players like Bowyer because clearly his legs have gone but Carlos is fit as a fiddle and covers as much ground as anyone. And the joker that said he gets beaten too easily in a one on one, sorry mate you clearly don't go to Portman road every week.

His positional play is sometimes suspect but I really think if/when we put a conventional full back in his position, unless they are of real quality we will lose A LOT of forward attacking play as so many of our attacks are started by Edwards at right back. Stupidly underated I think is this player.

Agent talk - curse of modern football - Like Unions they have become totally self serving and lost the whole point of being - PLUS whilst we have had two great results and some improvement - EDWARDS IS NOT AND NEVER WILL BE A RIGHT BACK - He is 33 , We are beginning to get a good core and spine to the team PLUS Edwards has cost quite few goals this season - yes he is good going forward but teams pick him out as a weakness which puts pressure on both RM CM and CB - Be real - he aint no worldbeater and we could do better - Squad player next season and if his Agent aint happy do one - except dont drive away please

Let him go ! bring in a young defender like Cresswell !! and develop our own youngsters to provide cover !!!

naa, he covers more ground becuase he is always out of position, would give him another year at a reduced wage and use as a back up winger.

I can't have too much sympathy for Edwards if he rejected a 2 year deal and chose a 1 year extension. I would like him to stay, but the money has to reflect his age and the realities of the Financial Fair Play rules that are coming.

It would suit both sides to keep him as cover while ainsley or a new RB slotted in, we have stuck by him with all of his problems so why turn on him now. Settle it and move on that is the root of all problems at the club currently too much talking and not enough doing.

I'm not too bothered if he stays, he's ageing and we definitely want to cut our average age down. Although it's not his fault he's not that good a right back, bit of a poor mans Dani Alves, good going forward but slightly suspect at the back, typical wing back in a way, much more attack minded (but not good enough to be an out and out winger) and weak in defence. Given that we have Carson, Martin and JET who can all play on the right I think he's a bit surplus to requirements, that is if we manage to sign a new RB in the summer, however given that our record in the transfer market hasn't been that good of late maybe offer him a one year deal just in case we somehow manage to fail to land a new RB (which given Cleggy is the man who negotiates anything is possoble) then at least we wont be left with no RB at al!!

Is the best we have and is one of the quickest on the team. admit his crossing isnt as good as it was but still one of the better signings we have made. I'd suggest a year, 18 months contract and then let him go. by then we should have invested in a decent full back.

If he was that good in right midfield he would be there! Always try to creep up there during the game and leaves a gap in defence.

I think Carlos has been unlucky being played at right back, where quite frankly he is terrible. It baffles me how Jewell cannot see this, The fact is we need to start offloading these older lads on big wages.

One year deal on reduced terms! Could be a handy squad player, but agree with most that we require a new RB!

Agree with others comments made i'm not majorly fused if he gets a 1 year deal or we decide not to offer him a new contract. He has been a good player for us over the years, however i would like to see more youthful players comming in.

In theory he's a decent right midfielder (who can't cross) who's unconvincingly chugging away at right back. He covers a lot of grass (as does Jaime Peters) but is too often caught out of position. If he played in a more attacking position then I'd question his crossing ability more. In defence he's really struggling as many others have said. If he wants to stay on reduced terms as cover then offer him a deal, otherwise I'd rather we found a younger player.

The worst player we have. Lets the defence down every game. Not even scottish league standard. BYE BYE>

Tractorboybig I can't even describe how much of an idiot you are if you think that.

Totally agree with you Garv. If you ask me there seem to be a lot of people posting on this site who do not go to Portman Road. I do not think Carlos is the worst defender in the world. He has natural pace and athleticism and usually recovers well when he has made a defensive error. People love Cresswell (as I do) but he is not the finished article as a defender and does not have Edwards' pace.
The one thing I would like to see CE do more often is unleash a few more of those superb 20 yard strikes he has shown he is capable of. I see all the games at PR and at least 75% of the away games and I think he has been one of our better players this season.

Some of you lot on here don't have a clue do you? Edwards is a fine footballing full back who's skill and pace gets us and himself out of trouble a lot. He is good on one ones with a quick winger because of his pace, and I would rather have someone in the wide positions who is good with the ball. Becareful what you wish for remember Eastman and Delaney as full backs no thanks.

Although he is not the best Right Back in the world, I have always felt that Edwards gives a very good account of himself in every game generally speaking, he is very useful at moving the ball down the right of midfield and like Peters puts good effort in at that position, however I imagine if we get a really good Right Back, then it will be difficult to use him in place of other Mid. Field players that are available, I think however we should be really grateful for the gap he has filled so well at Right Back for such a long time, I would not want to see him go personally.

Opted to have another year at full wages, rather than secure a 2 year deal and regular football, do you need to hear any more?

Awful right back, awful right winger, convicted criminal, has been central to our goals conceded problems and is only here for the money.

Get rid and get rid quick, will only be missed by the opposition attacking players.

MrCool added 17:23 - Feb 7
The most skilful player we have. Not a natural RB, but puts in the effort and uses his skill to make up for being played out of position (he IS a winger).

And yes, he does wander out of position sometimes..... ...but so does Glen Johnson.

Garv added 18:48 - Feb 7
I think we also need to remember that when he first came and in his first season he was very poor at right midfield, or at the very least nowhere near what we were excepting. One game I can remember well is Southampton away in the cup when he was had a terrible game at right mid, couldn't beat a man and couldn't cross.

He's had his best games for us under Jewell at right back.
