Edwards Frustrated at Lack of New Deal
Edwards Frustrated at Lack of New Deal

Right-back Carlos Edwards is reported to be frustrated that Town are yet to offer him a new contract. The 33-year-old Trinidadian is one of 11 players whose terms are up at the end of the campaign*.

Speaking last week, manager Paul Jewell said he had held talks with the former Sunderland man and that he was OK with the situation: “I spoke to Carlos on Sunday and he’s quite happy to see how things go.

“He just wants to make sure we’re safe, we’re all right and we’ll have a chat nearer the date [of the end of his contract].”

However, a source close to the player is reported to have said that that’s far from the case with Edwards, who is keen to end his career with the Blues, wanting his future sorted but with the club yet to sit down to discuss new terms: “The manager keeps saying that he has concerns over Carlos’s age and weaknesses as a defender.

“Well, he has started all but one league game this season and not once been in the treatment room, while it’s the manager who is playing him at right-back.”

Edwards turned down a new two-year deal at the end of last season, which would have seen him take a 20 per cent cut in wages, instead choosing to trigger a one-year clause in his previous deal on the same salary. Fellow Trinidadian Jason Scotland has a similar clause in his contract which will be triggered after three more league starts.

The one-time Wrexham and Luton man is believed to have proposed a deal to the club which would see his basic wage reduced but with more significant appearance payments and the option of a second year if he makes 23 appearances during the first.

LA Galaxy’s reported interest in signing the right-back or right midfielder is said to have cooled but a number of Championship sides are believed to be eyeing his situation.

Meanwhile, Town’s reserves are in action in a behind-closed-doors friendly at home to Leyton Orient this afternoon.

bluelady - good post, and to add to what you've already said, he has been played out of position, most if not all, of the season - has he complained ? NO - but he will admit to anyone that he is not a fullback, and never will be.
So what sort of game has Jewell been playing with him ? - other than to p#ss him off.
Good man management skills ? - I think not.

"a source close to the player is reported to have said" -- so someone down the pub who wanted a bit of attention? No news.

Biggest liability in the team, we would have let in half the goals we have this year!!

I'd definately give him another year - but not at right back (please God).

Think Smith,Sonko,Carson,Scotland & Cropper should also be given new deals along with extending Hyam,Drury,Martin & Creswell's deals.

Needless to say,Leadbitter can go.

not really surprised if comments about carlos are true.i see a a bloke bustin his butt week in week out sometimes taking crap off us ,playing out of position.i'm not surprised there's a bit of wrangling as i think he has worked hard enough for the club to put something decent on the table. but then looking from managements side we do need to get some younger players in this "on going building project"they tell us they are committed to.thats a problem glad i'm not sorting out but at the same time hope both sides reach the best possible conclusion.

maybe ST holders are seeing something I haven't, but when I've seen Town this season, he's been a liability at right-back, wingers going past him for fun, constantly out of position etc. There's certainly no excuse for having him at right-back next season, and I can't say I'm anxious to have him back in midfield.

That said, we've a bad record of letting squad players go and then signing someone worse, or no one at all (which is in fact how Edwards got the job as RB in the first place). So sign a right-back, and offer him a squad players wages for a year. If he doesn't want that, let him go.

Give him nothing. He has no interest in the badge, only money. He will leave anyway if we are relegated. Bye Carlos, on yer bike. Not too many of those retards left that Roy signed.

alljezer - get real man - the 'ones who play for the badge' in today's game, are few and far between (if there's any).
Don't delude yourself by thinking otherwise.
