Smith in New Zealand Squad
Thursday, 9th Feb 2012 09:24

Town defender Tommy Smith has been named in the New Zealand squad for their home friendly against Jamaica on Wednesday 29th February. The 21-year-old has previously won eight full caps, which include all three games at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The Blues have refused to give permission for Smith to play for New Zealand’s U23s in Olympics qualifiers which take place next month as they clash with domestic fixtures.

New Zealand: Jake Gleeson (Portland Timbers), Mark Paston (Wellington Phoenix), Tony Lochhead (Wellington Phoenix), Ryan Nelsen (captain, Tottenham Hotspur), Winston Reid (West Ham), Ben Sigmund (Wellington Phoenix), Tommy Smith (Ipswich Town), Ivan Vicelich (Auckland City), Leo Bertos (Wellington Phoenix), Jeremy Brockie (Newcastle Jets), Tim Brown (Wellington Phoenix), Dan Keat (Los Angeles Galaxy), Michael McGlinchey (Central Coast Mariners), Marco Rojas (Melbourne Victory), Kosta Barbarouses (Alania Vladikavkaz), Chris Killen (Shenzhen Ruby), Shane Smeltz (Perth Glory), Chris Wood (Bristol City).

Only a friendly all be it in Jamaica but i would think a slight injury might prevent him from going...nudge nudge wink wink (club more important than country at the moment!)

i really think if we have the CBs to cover him, they should let him play in the olympics! it would be such a huge thing for him, and its not like he will have to travel far to get back to ipswich afterwards

Ironic isn't it? Our one currect full international is a member of the defence which has let in 57 goals so far this season.
Nonetheless, I wish him well and I hope he gets an extended contract with us.

Will have his football education severely handicapped with Hutchings and Mc Cathy as coaches.

Tommy could have been another addition from Ipswich to play in the Olympics Cody Cropper will almost certainly be playing for the USA under 23 side having had a good trial in Germany and could be selected to represent them. But like was mentioned Ipswich Town comes first if the goalkeeping situation is not resolved. I also believe we have another player who could be playing in the Olympics. But the way things are at the moment all could be refused .I forgot that Cody Cropper injury may put him back a bit but still has time to be match fit again before then?

This is what we've stopped him playing in, not the Olympic tournament itself (should NZ qualify)

Correct score. Glad you're happy with the 2-3 goals we let in per game, Booblehat.

Will miss the Bristol game. Thank goodness PJ has sorted the lack of CN's - he's had ages so there can be no excuse - yet oh dear, Clegg and PJ failed in the last window. Shame.

Soupytwist your correct. My comments looking at it again is a bit confusing. If New Zealand qualify Tommy could still play in the Olympics. But they will have to qualify without Tommy. Lets hope the young Ipswich Players make it to the Olympics and represent their country COYB
