Jewell: Redknapp is the People's Choice
Jewell: Redknapp is the People's Choice
Thursday, 9th Feb 2012 14:32

Town boss Paul Jewell says “people’s choice" Harry Redknapp would have the respect of the players and the goodwill of the supporters if he is handed the job of England manager. Redknapp is strongly tipped to succeed Fabio Capello, who resigned yesterday with the Town boss having some sympathy with the Italian.

Jewell said: “I think it’s quite unique in football. There’s always a people’s choice and Harry’s definitely the people’s choice, except I’d guess the Tottenham fans.

“He’s the people’s choice and I think he’s also the one that would get the nod from people in football as well.

“Players, managers, coaches and supporters, everyone seems to be behind Harry and the England situation. Certainly he would have the respect of the players and the goodwill of the supporters.”

The Blues boss says he can see why Capello decided to step down after the FA stripped John Terry, who is due to stand trial in July over allegations that he racially abused Anton Ferdinand, of the England captaincy: “You’re always going to be surprised when a manager resigns four months before a tournament, but there were obviously a few rumblings.

“I think the decision [to strip Terry of the captaincy], whether it’s the right one or the wrong one, wasn’t taken by the manager and I can understand Capello’s annoyance at that because at the end of the day he’s the manager. He needed to be consulted I feel, and by the sounds of it that decision was taken away from him.

“He thought they questioned his authority, and I can see that. But I can see the other side of the story. If they felt something needed to be done with John Terry — which I don’t really have a view on as I’m too busy trying to run my own club — it has to be done jointly behind closed doors where they decide what they’re going to do.”

He would be great and as Jewell says any english person would want him!
Question to you all..
Is it important that the manager is English?

To answer your question Sindre94,
Yes, its important that the next manager is English, we've had two foreign managers and neither one has taken us forward, sideways maybe but definitely not forward!
Is Psycho that bad, no, but he's untried really as a manager, he's done ok at under 21 level but failed dismally at club level, besides, he says he's not ready for the role so that takes him out of the equation.
Away from this, enjoy reading your posts, you generally talk a lot of sense ;-)

Two things occurring in one day (a coincidence?) which must be good news for England's football team!

Considering we have provided England with its best two Managers, it's now Tottenham's turn - to let Harry go.

If only the Press will stay off his back.......

Shut up Jewell and concentrate on Ipswich rather than giving interviews

I don't agree that the England manager must be English, I feel it should be the best person available. However, after two foreign managers I'd personally much prefer the next manager to be a former England player. Pearce has been so close to the England manager's position for a long time and would be a good choice, and Redknapp is currently the best performing English manager in the BPL. Then again how many others are there?

If I was 'Arry it must be quite tempting to stay at Spurs and have another crack at the CL next season.
I remember Graham Taylor was a very popular choice as England manager, Keegan as well, and we all know what happened to them.

Harry for the England job and the 'Special One' for Spurs?

Harry for England, Hiidink will go to Spurs. I really feel for Fabio, the FA have hung him out to dry on this, how they think you can't involve the Manager in the selection of Team captain is beyond me and just shows how badly run the Home of Football has become.

I agree with Ernie! PJ should be concentrating on the Town and their 3 points on Saturday! In the 10 mins it took him to that interview he could have taught Sonko the basics of defending...Ball comes near Sonko....Stay on your feet.....compose yourself......kick the bloomin thing as hard as poss away from our goal!!!!!!!!

How is this not concentraing on Ipswich/ He was obviously asked a question and he answered it. Probably took around two minutes in total to listen to the question and then answer it.

Not exactly negleting Ipswich

Sindre, I think that a national manager should either be a Citizen of that country or has a vast knowledge or experience of the country. For example Mourinho has been talked about as next manager and he has some experience, so in my mind would be in with a shout. Wenger has 16 years in this country and should know English players thoroughly but say Guadiola from Barca, great coach he is (and has a good command of the English language) hasn't managed here and doesn't have enough in depth knowledge about the players we have.
My choice is Redknapp as he has done a good job everywhere he's gone and I feel he could take us further in tournaments than we've been used to since the Bobby Robson days.

Buryblue, I tend to agree, half the problem we have had is that we either appoint a Manager who is English but has no European experience (Mclaren) or we go for a European who has no English experience (Sven, Fabio). Pretty much all those who could tick both boxes are unlikely to leave their clubs to manage the English National team.
We did have Hoddle who made a decent fist of it but was crucfied by the press and Venebles who did ok but was considered "a bit dodgy".
Rednapp certainly has the experience to do it although his european experience is a bit limited, but then so does Morihinio or even Rafa Benitez and all are good with the press.

Redknapp is most certainly not my choice.

I'd like to see either Mourinho or Wenger take charge.

People seem to forget about Steve McClaren, he was the English wedge between Sven and Capello and he was useless... I'd have Stuart Pearce if 'Arry' doesn't want the job just yet :)

He doesn't have to be English, but he needs to have managed in England and have a good understanding of "English football". I dont think either Capello or Sven did, whilst captain boring was doomed to failure from the start. Come to think of it, we've not had a decent manager since El Tel for me.

Martus added 17:34 - Feb 9
Remember Sven and Capello are two of England's most successful managers and in between them was one of the worst (McClarren) who was English and the fans choice. If i was Harry i dont know if i would take the job TBH, its a great honour being manager of your country but the press and media are soo harsh if you dont win anything (England WONT win the Euro's eveb under the best manager the world has) which would tarnish what has been a great managerial career.

A manager of a national side can only do so much, Capello did an excellent job with what he had, which was a group of players not technically advanced like the German, Spainish, Dutch and Italian players. The England job was and still is the impossible job, because the media and majority of the English public think we are world beaters, whereas realistic English fans and the rest of Europe think we are way far behind the other big football countries in terms of technique and style. England still play kick and rush football whereas the rest of the world have realised pass and move is the way forward.

The day the FA board all retire and let in a new breed who can actually bring this country too the 21st century the better.
