Jewell Delighted With Third Successive Win
Jewell Delighted With Third Successive Win
Tuesday, 14th Feb 2012 22:54

Blues boss Paul Jewell was delighted with his side’s third successive victory, Town leaving Fratton Park with a 1-0 victory over Portsmouth. Pompey manager Michael Appleton admitted his team were second best but believed his side had scored a second-half equaliser when Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’s knee diverted Greg Halford’s long throw into the Blues’ net.

Jewell said: “We’ve played well tonight, we’ve created a host of opportunities. They played well at our place and we were fortunate to beat them, I thought they were one of the better teams to come to Ipswich and we nicked the result there. But tonight I thought we fully deserved it.

“I think before we scored we had three good opportunities. In the second half, Lee’s hit the inside of the post, he’s missed a really good opportunity, the keeper’s made a good save from Murph and you start thinking that we should be comfortable here.

“At the end they had four centre-forwards on the pitch, they were knocking it in the box from throw-ins and corners and we had to defend resolutely.

“We maybe had a little bit of fortune with their ‘goal’ but in general play anyone who was at the game will have thought we deserved to win.”

The Liverpudlian confirmed that referee Darren Deadman had adjudged that no one had touched Halford’s long throw: “That’s what the referee said. One or two people are saying it came off someone’s knee. Over the season sometimes you get it, sometimes you don’t.

“Not so long ago I was lambasting the linesperson’s decision at Birmingham, but on the balance of play, I thought we fully deserved it. On paper it’s a 1-0 but we could have scored four or five.”

The Blues boss was pleased with the way his team began what he felt could have been a tricky night: “It’s a difficult night to come here with everything that’s going on at this football club. It’s obviously a tough time for everybody connected to it, especially the supporters.

“We knew they would be as one, they’d back their team and we’d have to start quickly. We didn’t want them to get any momentum.

“We started the game very fast and very sharp and the goal was the least we deserved. We hit the bar, the keeper made a couple of saves and we had good opportunities.

“After that, for 10 minutes we let them back in the game, but overall, for an away performance, some of our counter-attacking football was terrific.”

Jewell, who also had praise for central defensive pair Tommy Smith and Damien Delaney, says his side have looked more dangerous going forward in recent weeks: “In the last four or five games we’ve looked a threat. We’ve got in the final third and we’ve got a cross or a shot in and made the keeper make a save.

“We look like we’re going to score a goal. Chops has found a bit of form, Lee Martin’s playing as well as he’s ever done. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas is looking the part and I thought Daryl Murphy was terrific tonight. That front four, our attacking players, have all looked dangerous.”

After the game around 2,000 Pompey fans from the Fratton End stayed behind to chant their support of the club and their anger at the various recent owners with the club set to go into administration in the next few days.

Jewell said the Blues players were paying tribute during their warm-down and he planned to do the same: “They’re brilliant. The players are out there applauding them and I’ll probably go out there and applaud them myself.

“Football clubs are about fans and sometimes they get a raw deal and Portsmouth have probably had a raw deal over the last few years. Supporters are the heartbeat of a football club.

“Rangers have gone into administration and it looks like Portsmouth are. It’s a lesson for football - it’s got to keep its house in order.

“Supporters sometimes want people to spend money they haven’t got and in the end it can lead to situations like we’ve got now.”

Pompey boss Michael Appleton says the video clearly shows that Halford’s throw caught Jay Emmanuel-Thomas before hitting the net and his side ought to have had an equaliser: “Basically, Emmanuel-Thomas knees the ball into his own goal. I thought it was a goal right away because the ball’s changed angle as it’s gone into the back of the net.

“The referee thought Halford threw it straight in, it wasn’t for a foul or anything like that. That’s disappointing and the boy knew as well, you could see on his face he knew he’d scored an own goal.

“But, did we do enough really to win the game or get something out of the game, if we really look deep down at ourselves? Probably not. It was a night when it didn’t really happen for us. I don’t know why.”

good idea, lets fire PJ for turning it around, why dont we sack chops for scoring goals, the defense for not conceding and whilst were at it, sack lee Martin for not getting himself sent off.....

Some people just defy logic.....

Don't worry it's just a blip. Wait till we play a proper team. Only Ipswich would allow an idiot like PJ to muck about taking us to 17th in the table. If anyone thinks Ipwsich will achieve anything with team you are mistaken.

I have not always made the kindest remarks about Tommy Smith, Damien Delaney and ALB but hats off to all three of them and log may it continue. I really feared we would lose last night but thankfully I was proved wrong. To my mind the introduction of Hyam and Drury and of course the return to form of Chopra and Martin have made a terrific difference. Team spirit is excellent and for once we can be really optimistic. We really owe Cardiff after the away match when we were cheated by Referee Dean Whitestone (yes him again) with a ridiculous penalty award. The team deserve a decent crowd Saturday - onwards and upwards.

Really pleased with the result last night. We started really well and got the goal, have to admit I was nervous and thought they might knick one but we held out and could have made it look it even better, so I'm very pleased! Also before the game I was worried about Delaney and Smith but they proved me wrong and helped to keep a clean sheet. Really excited for the game against Cardiff Saturday, if we can get the 3 points and get the elusive 4th straight win then that will be a massive step in the right direction!

Good result but we still need reinforcements at the back!

Fantastic to win three consecutive games, something Keane could not do in his whole time here. The clean sheet was an unexpected bonus.

Jewell has been knocked a lot this season, some of it with good reason, but let's look at his signings:

ANDY DRURY, £150K
Andy is showing real quality now, and with his work rate his return is a key reason for our good form. What a bargain.

MICHAEL CHOPRA, £1M
Jewell could not have known the extent of his problems, no one did. Michael is finally looking every bit the proven Championship striker he is though and to get him for £1M when Cardiff paid £4.5M is looking good business.

JAY EMMANUEL THOMAS, £1.5M
Jewell took a risk here and it is paying off now, as Jay is one of the most exciting players in the league and has bags of potential. If he carries on progressing we could have some player.

AARON CRESSWELL, £500K-ODD
We've lacked a good left-back for years, now we have a young one who is doing well.

Hold on, that's every player Jewell has spent a transfer fee on. 4/4 are hits! Well done Paul.

Well, this is really positive. Seems a bit of a vindication of having faith in the manager and giving him time to turn things around, rather than just turfing them out when things are going badly. Always hoped players like JET, Martin and Chopra would come good, and they finally have. Especially Chops, he's had a lot of problems this season, but seems to have finally turned a corner. 4 goals in 3 games isn't a bad turnover.
Plus still another 48 points up for grabs... ...maybe possibly make the playoffs? Nah, surely that's a bit too optimistic? Saying that, stranger things have happened. Either way, keep it up Ipswich Town.

Agree totally with all of the positives regarding this turm around. Mark's comments about Jewells signings JET, Chop's, Cresswell and Drury is spot on. 17 shots against 8 last night when your away, is that positive or what?
Cardiff, would take a draw but to sneak a win would be fantastic. COYB

Does Appleton really expect Emmanuel-Thomas to pick the ball out of his own net and then try and convince the officials that it DID hit his knee? No point bringing JET into it, you lost and the result was right at the end.

Good result - Great work and fingers crossed the good run will continue.

Play offs are not realistic (14 points off, 16 games to go, are we going to win 5 more games than Reading, Birmingham etc? - I don't think so) but a top half of the table finish is achievable and would be a great recovery after a difficult season. We can also start turning an eye to next season too now, which could be very handy!

Great result and well done to the team and the fans.
A couple of decent defensive loan signings and we are starting to look like a team to fear once again.
If anyone went to the game last night did any of the Pompey trio look worth persuing?

Fantastic result. It does show that having a mobile midfield will win you games at any level. Shame it took PJ some long to realise.
Lee Clark sacked by Huddersfield. Go get him and sell more season tickets for next season..

Fantastic result. The real test though will be how we react when we next get beaten. This season we've had a couple of good runs, but when we have lost we've gone into a steep and prolonged decline. Hopefully we won't be quite as fragile this time around

Just to show there are some people in football even more insane than some of the 'characters' we get on this blog - Huddersfield have sacked Lee Clark who has lost two games in about 3 years.

You probably missed the post from Surco72 under Match Reports. Here is an extract:
On the transfer side out of all the Pompey players i would like Halford the most -would be an asset to our back four with out a doubt .Henderson no better than Loach who will be free at the end of the season .Pearce solid and didnt really notice Ward at all.
I am wondering whether Danny Collins may still be an option for a loan until the end of the season. Someone reported that Stoke have named him in the first team squad but does that mean that he cannot be pried free?
