Klug Set for Town Return
Klug Set for Town Return
Sunday, 19th Feb 2012 22:15

TWTD understands that former Blues coach Bryan Klug is being lined-up for a return to Portman Road. Stalwart Klug was controversially axed by former boss Roy Keane in January 2010 and is currently the assistant director and head of player development at Tottenham’s Academy.

Klug was Town’s assistant boss under Jim Magilton until John Gorman’s appointment, when he moved into a head of football development role, and was taking charge of the reserves at the time of his Portman Road exit.

The 51-year-old was a youth player with the Blues between 1977 and 1983 but failed to make a senior appearance, moving on to Wimbledon (loan), Chesterfield and Peterborough United and then into non-league football.

Klug returned to Portman Road in 1987, joining the coaching staff and in 1998 became the director of the newly formed Academy in an era during which Kieron Dyer, Richard Wright, James Scowcroft, Titus Bramble and others emerged.

In 2005 Klug, who has also had spells as caretaker-manager of the Blues, led the Academy to the club’s third FA Youth Cup before becoming Magilton’s assistant a year later, shortly after Newcastle United had approached him to run their Academy.

The EPPP developments which come into effect next season will see a shake-up at Academy and reserve levels across the board and the Blues will be required to appoint additional full-time coaches whether they opt for a Category One or Category Two youth set-up.

Meanwhile, one of the Sunday tabloids reports that Blues striker Jason Scotland has turned down the chance to join Bristol City on loan.

Scotland will trigger an additional year on his contract at his current wages if he makes another three league starts before the end of the season.

Bryan Klugs acedemy has been responsible for several top players coming through over the years and we need someone like him back in charge (would also free up Russell Osman to work as a defensive coach?) Another strange Roy keane decision.

This is news out of the blue, but it would be very welcome. Sacking Brian Klug was another mistake on a long list from Roy Keane, who looks like he will struggle to even hold down a job as a pundit after another poor showing on ITV1 today.

Bit harsh to blame Roy for Klug going- very hard to keep him on after he had been Jim's No 2 . Klug is a great Youth coach with kids under 16 (Ian Smith was the U19 Coach) Klug brilliant as man to run whole academy. But was out of depth with 1st team

Please let this be true. Can we hope for a return to an Ipswich Town that stands for all the things that this great club should whilst remaining competitive in the modern game? Perhaps not, but it's still a wonderful dream, and this would be a stride in the right direction.

Brilliant, absolutely fantastic, getting back to the family club from the past, just need to recover and pick up the pieces from the Keane mess and onwards and upwards, this is a good place to start in my book!!!!

i really hope this is true, lets get Kiwomya back too..... then go for a Cat One academy...... Osman, Klug, Kiwomya, and whilst theyre at it get Fabian Wilnis back in, i think all of those personalities are the right sort of people to learn from..... tell me there woldnt be lots of decent youngsters who could learn from them thats for sure!

Could hardly believe my eyes when I saw this story - if it's true, my birthday and Christmas presents will both have come very early indeed!! Welcome home Klug, you should never have been axed by the Silently Glaring One in the first place, he was always in a minority of one about that terrible decision.

Can't think how you were prised away from Spurs but I raise my bobble hat to the genius who managed it! What a treat!

Excellent news, however can't help thinking this may be a sweetener before we get told we've gone for the cat 2 option. Still, I can only hope that no matter what the situation is, town will still be able to bring through a decent group of youth players with klug around.

Wouldn't mind seeing a return for John Gorman as well...

Tractorboy24, I can't see why Klug would want to step down from Spurs Academy to a cat 2 academy with a Chapmionship club. Too many false dawns at PR but with financial fair play about to arrive then spending some money on a cat1 academy will make a lot of sense. Fingers crossed.

Roy Keane was an egotistical idiot who did much damage to the club, with this news and recent results lets hope we've turned the corner to a brighter future :)
