Jewell: Town the Better Side Before the Break
Jewell: Town the Better Side Before the Break
Saturday, 25th Feb 2012 18:07

Town boss Paul Jewell felt there was little in his side’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton until the Sussex side’s second goal with the Blues having been the better team in the first half.

Jewell said: “I thought we were the better team for large periods of the game. Certainly in the first half we had some really good play, some good opportunities. Gordon Greer got a terrific shot of Michael Chopra’s off the line, fair play to him.

“In the first half I thought we were the better team, I was a bit disappointed to come in 1-0 down. In the second half we took the game to them, Tommy Smith had a good opportunity from a corner, Michael Chopra’s goal was disallowed, and it was handball, no doubt.”

He was disappointed with the goals conceded, particularly the second which came from a poor Arran Lee-Barrett kick: “The goals we gave away were synonymous with us really — poor goals. But up until the second goal I thought we were well in the game.

“It wasn’t just the goal, it was the manner of the goal, it just deflated everybody. It came out of the blue and it kicks you in the teeth.”

The loss sees the Blues run of four wins on the spin come to an end but the Blues boss says the Seagulls are in good league form themselves: “We’re disappointed to lose the game because we’ve been on a nice little run. But Brighton, it may have gone unnoticed by other people, they’re on a good run as well.

“I thought that if we could get an equaliser we could go on and win the game but it wasn’t to be. The second goal changed the whole complexion of the game and 3-0 flatters them.”

Brighton boss Gus Poyet was pleased to take his side’s undefeated league streak to nine games stretching back to last year: “It was a very good way of continuing with our run of being unbeaten in 2012.

“I think in the first half there was no team which was on top of the other. But I think we used our three or four breaks in the right way and created the better chances.

“They had the ball and they had a few shots from distance, but having said that there weren’t those kind of clear chances for them.

“In the second half we controlled the game and after the second goal it was the kind of game where you could go on and score five or six.

“It was a typical game. You have to earn the right to play and to go on and win it and I think we did that.”

Disappointing, several players went missing today(Murphy Hyam) in particular and Cresswell had a shocker.Defensively dodgy but thats never gonna go away, the difference today was that Brighton were clinical in their execution,a real cutting edge and i must say i thort they looked a very good side. They hounded us as weve done to teams recently and whereas we were ponderous in our build up play they shot up a couple of gears and were thru us at will. A reality check again but no kneejerk nonsense, lets put it right nxt saturday.

I think complacency set in a bit in this game, also at 1-0 we were still in it,, but ALB GAVE THEM THE 2ND GOAL,, and it was all over,, we must get a decent goalie I cannot be very confident with ALB in goal ???? SORRY

This was always going to be a difficult game to win, but after recent results I didn't expect to lose by three. And therein lies the problem. When we are good, we are very very good but when we are bad we are awful. PJ may, possibly correctly, take some positives from today's game but it was clear to me that once a goal down it was always going to be a struggle and after their second goal it was just a question of how many. We are still a long way from being a decent team; decent teams do not concede bad goals with the regularity we do. But hey, people love a roller coaster ride. We're probably safe from relegation; let's just enjoy the rest of the season.

Ok today reminds us (if we needed reminding) that we're not the finished article. But looking to next season we've got the basis of a good midfield and front line, plus others like Jimmy (another season in him?) Josh and Jason. Get another RB and Carlos becomes another possibility further forward (and cover at RB).
Can we get by with combination of Delaney/ Sonko and Smith; new keeper?
Onwards and upwards 2012/13

Let's see how we do in the next game V Bristol
This will show where we are at this moment in time.

Sounded like both our wide men had poor games, this ment we were overrun in midfield and not much cover for the full backs.

We should stick with the same 10 outfield players, but I do think we should change the goalkeeper. Carson should be on the bench for the next match incase our wide players have another poor game.

See Andrews scored for WBA today so thats 2 in 2 for him carried on where he left off with us.

What happened to Collins is he still in the Stoke 2nd team, might be able to get him back on loan

Hope PJ doesn't hit the panic button now and start tinkering with what has been a very encouraging team..if he does then I hope he gives Stevenson a few games and not resort to putting Leadbitter back in!

Look, lets keep PJ and see him turn things around for us next season but a few points

1. This season - 13 games out of 34 where we have conceded more than 3 goals. For stat freaks thats nearly 40%!
2. I'm no fan of loan signings but 2 of our better ones were Stockdale and Collins. Neither one is getting games and Collins doesnt even get named as a sub. Why not get at least one in?
3. If a team needs a lift when going behind, who would you rather see come on
- Leadbitter or Bullard?

Number 3 is rhetorical btw

Fed up with saying this but Richard Wright is in my humble opinion the best of our 3 currently available keepers, we are going nowhere this season so come on PJ give old big ears a game....because he's worth it!! :)

Goals:

1. I genuinely dont think Cresswell can be blamed for his positioning or whatever, and I can promise I'm not just defending him because of his excellent season so far, I just think that ball was brilliant and had it been done by one of our players we would still be creaming over it now.

The centre backs though are at fault. CMS didn't break the world sprint record to get in that 6 yard box, and no particular movement was made, but Delaney, and I think more so Smith just didn't keep up with him, and in the first place didn't even anticipate a ball coming across a penalty area and a striker tapping it in. They need to anticipate these things! Was Lee-Barret's positioning suspect? Maybe, as he had originally decided to come and get the ball himself, and was still making his way back to his position was the ball was slotted home.

2. Well, awful kick (a given, and not Shay). He could have taken a touch, but essentially it was just awful technique that took it (not very far) towards the middle of the pitch instead of out to the right wing where a proper kick would have taken it (or maybe even out of play on half way just to get it clear!). After that, Leadbitter not tracking back far enough seemed evident to me, Hyam might have got closer had he been on and made a tackle, although that's maybe a bit harsh. I have no idea why Smith was where he was, which was no man's land really, left a gaping hole in defence. In the end it was a very good strike, couldn't get closer to the corner if you tried a million times (saying that being as far over as he was you'd expect Lee-Barret to get a hand to it at least) but general positioning and lack of a tackle was poor.

3. Again, and I don't want to keep blaming the guy, but Smith was in a terrible position and not deep enough in line with Delaney where he should have been. Reminded me of defending against Southampton at home at the start of the season. And again poor Lee-Barret can be criticised, the ball just went under him.

Too much criticism of Smith and Lee-Barret for my liking who have done well in recent weeks, and sorry for that - as you can see I'm not mindlessly abusing the players and team - just saying it how I saw it.

I can remember one of the late, great Sir Bobby's teams getting hammered at PR. Sir Bobby's post match comment ' They thought all they had to do was chuck 11 blue shirts on the pitch!' I think those 3 points cost us a Div 1 title but we stil loved RR.
Four wins on the trot and we've lost one: so what! It's about how they react next week that matters. On the right day Town are a very, very good side but they need a few more bricks in the wall: Ideally two CBs (I think Smith will come good though), a RB and a decent keeper. I think box to box Town are as good as any team in Championship so no problems midfield and we certainly can score goals.
Back four and GK need sorting. Another holding midfielder would be good too.
All teams have bad days and today it seems a few players had bad days at the same time.
Hey-ho! Very recently we beat a team that will be in next year's PL 5-1 and today we lost 3-0 to play off contenders. That's the Championship and it gets tougher every year.
Keep the faith and keep the faith in PJ. Believe it or not he knows what he's doing and he's more honest than most.

I was out in Brighton after the match and took a fair bit of stick for the banner that was unfolded before the game criticising Brighton of being a sell out club (due to the Amex sposnsorship if the stadium). I didn't see it but was at a loss to explain why a certain number of our fans would do such a thing. Why should we have any gripe against Brighton and the whole message smacks of stupidity - they nearly went bust a few years ago and if it wasn't for Dick Knight, they wouldn't be around today. The amex sponsorship is a community deal so is hardly selling out (nowhere near as bad some other stadia sponsorships in the country). The banner only served a purpose of giving us a bad name and making us look a little bit thick - nice work lads.

Hard luck lads.

How about Matt Mills, on loan from Leicester, training with their youth team after a fall out with Nigel Pearson.

4 wins in 5 is a great run. Shows what work needs to be in key areas.

As others have said, don't hit panic button PJ. We have won 4 with that team. Stick with hyam cos leadboots is not the future.

PJ after all your years in the game surely even you know that a game is over 2 halves of 45 minutes.iIt's no good being the better team before the break you have to do it as well after the break to win matches.
0

brightonfan added 09:43 - Feb 26
Maybe the fact that I was sitting a few rows behind PJ and slightly more elevated I had a slightly better view but he must have been at a different match if not, if you let your back line get sucked up to the halfway line trying to play the offside game you are going to get slaughtered by our wingers you got it wrong Paul just like Gus did against Liverpool you had the ball for most of the first half granted, but you just played it back and forth side to side with little if any penetration, and subsequently got caught, dot blame the central defence it was your tactics!

Garv added 11:11 - Feb 26
Brighton fan in fairness when your centre back has it just outside your own box where do you expect our defenders to be? It was an inch perfect pass that would have split any defence. Our centre backs just weren't good enough to anticipate the cross.
