Town Suspend Bullard
Town Suspend Bullard

Town have suspended midfielder Jimmy Bullard for two weeks after an alleged drinking session earlier this week which saw the 33-year-old and striker Michael Chopra turn up to Thursday training more than an hour late. The one-time England call-up, who joined the Blues after his Hull contract was terminated after an alleged indiscretion on a pre-season trip to Slovenia, and Town’s top scorer spent Tuesday and Wednesday nights out in Chopra’s home city of Newcastle.

Manager Paul Jewell, who made the duo train with the youth squad on their return, is understood to have told Bullard to stay away from Town while the club decide what further action to take. The Blues boss has launched an investigation and will comment after Saturday’s game against Bristol City. Chopra, who has not been suspended, could also face action.

Several senior members of the Town squad were in London on Tuesday for a bonding session, enjoying drinks and a meal in the West End when the pair relocated their evening to Newcastle, where Chopra spends most of his time off with his young son.

The duo were spotted by a large number of Tweeters in various Newcastle night spots on both nights, including bars named Bijoux and Perdu, with a claim that at one stage the Blues midfield man was seen with his trousers down. Bullard was also said to be at a casino on Wednesday with his former Hull team-mate Nolberto Solano and Stoke’s Cameron Jerome.

In addition to Bullard, veteran Peruvian international Solano is also set for trouble as he missed a reserve game with his current club Hartlepool, manager Neale Cooper commenting: “Nobby didn't turn up, I cannot really comment at the moment. He was meant to be there, but never appeared. We will see what happens after that.''

New signing Ryan Stevenson, veteran Lee Bowyer or Northern Ireland international Josh Carson could take Bullard’s place on the Town bench for the Bristol City match.

Did Cardiff not get rid of Chopra after a similar incident last season, ie players drinking, mucking around, rather than focusing on the run in at the end of the season? I remember the articles with Cardiff fans slating him.

Still, it seems to me like not even Mr Incompetent Jewell could get away with not suspending both of them unless there was a clear difference between the indiscretions, so let's wait before condemning both.

The thing is, few of us would mind if he was fit and getting in the team. But he isn't.

So so so predictable. This is exactly what a Hull fan said to me would happen when I spoke to him after the home match with them last season. Same old same old. There's no smoke without fire. Talented but a lazy waster.

JB should not ever be allowed to play for us again. An overpaid overated trouble making prinma-donna who is a complete waste of space,Wherever he's been he has always caused trouble just ask Wigan, Fulham and Hull. I hope all the muppets who voted him Ipswich Town's player of the season last year are really proud of themselves.Chopra should also be disiplined by the club but how is difficult after all the support and money the club has given him us supporters deserve more from him.

The guys go out for a drink = it happens, not a regular event
Bullard pulls his trousers down = probably does it all the time!
Chops not in casino = thank God (hopefully)
Highly paid professionals let it impact on their job = not acceptable at all, punishment has to be dished out

I just hope it's a "thing" to move on from and not symptomatic of a bigger issue for JB.

Hull City fan here. Not gloating at all, I feel bad for you guys finding yourselves in the same terrible position with Bullard that we were (although not as bad in terms of money and contract length - can you imagine having to pay him £45k a week to behave like that?)
Just to point out, all this talk of getting rid and mutual termination etc won't happen unless Bullard wants it. Going by our experience of him, the guy has no shame at all and he won't disappear off elsewhere unless he at least equals the deal he is on now, and nobody else will touch him on those terms. If you want rid now, you will almost certainly have to either subsidise his wages or go down the sacking route with all the potential pitfalls that brings.
I would think this news strengthens our case against him though.

Bluelady.. once again i agree with your post.... i am so gutted, really hope that chops kept out of the casino? Going to look for a positive here, if he did stay away , shows he is showing signs of recovery from his addiction.

It is hard at times not to feel sorry for Jewell, and i do at times, but you know what, he signed them, he wanted them, we all did( well i know i did).
A leopard never changes its spots! Well seldom do people change their ways, we were warned and we never listened. the club surely has to put more emphasis on a players history, mentality and dedication to previous employers.

Nothing more to say other than the truth i expect will come out , and if chops is just as guilty then suspend him too, the club treated him and helped beyond the call of duty.... this all disappoints me, beyond belief. So looking forward to todays game, wonder if this will have an affect on todays game? MIght see chopra full of remorse and play a blinder or may drag the whole team down... coyb

Best solution for BOTH Players is to fine them two weeks wages and move on.
It's not ideal what they done but if you was a football earning lot's of money would you live it up a little? I'm not excusing them but there is still lot's of work to happen on the pitch. Sadly I think this is the ideal situation for ME & SC To reduce the wage bill I.E Bullard. Dissapointed in both just hope the club do the right thing.

Bluearmy4 life... sorry i dont agree, no i wouldnt live it up like that, part of their massive wages means they are expected to behave in a certain way, even when in there free time, they will have lots of free time when retired, i know they are human, but should know right from wrong...there is no justification for this at all. They are very privileged and shouldnt forget it, the club has gone out on a limb for both these players...coyb

Bullard had a reputation of being a loose cannon. Great for team morale and able to conjure moments of genius before he came here, discipline was not his strong point. He played well last season to get his contract for this season, were all the rumours about other clubs wanting him true, who knows?
As for is it true about the exploits in Newcastle, the report says a lot of people Tweeted, not one malicious person but a lot, no smoke without fire.
Bullard this season when he has played has been a disappointment, coming on as a sub he seems to run around like a head-less chicken, causing more problems to his own team than the opposition
