Drury: Don't Underestimate Bristol City Win
Drury: Don't Underestimate Bristol City Win
Tuesday, 6th Mar 2012 06:00

Town star Andy Drury is convinced the weekend win over Bristol City was better than some people thought.

The midfielder, who rounded off the 3-0 victory with a stunning long-distance strike, believes it may have been under-estimated in some quarters.

Drury, 28, has a message for anyone inclined to think ‘It was only Bristol City’ as a result of the West Country outfit’s miserable current form.

But regardless of the out-of-sorts Robins collecting only one point from their last seven games, Drury said: “If people are saying that they are not showing our performance enough respect.

“I thought we played really well and the boys deserve a lot of credit. Whenever they [City] got the ball we were on them and some of our moves were fantastic.

“We didn’t let them play but a few days before the game, when we watched clips of Bristol City’s previous game, they were creating chances. They didn’t do that against us.”

A modest Drury recalled, and played down, his spectacular 85th minute goal, his second of the season for Town but sixth in all after he netted four times in his 15-game loan spell at Crawley.

He added: “It’s got to be up there with the best I’ve scored — definitely one of the best if not the very best of my career so far.

“There was a bit of space that opened up in front of me and Chops did a good job setting me up. I’ll be honest — I was a bit tired by then. I just decided to hit it as hard as I could and luckily it went in.

“We do a fair bit of shooting practice during the week but I’d be lying if I said they always fly in like that!”

Monster strike and wonderful goal on Saturday from Drury. For me he has been the biggest difference between now and a few months ago. He has a real hunger and energy and sets the tone for the rest of the team with his constant harrying and closing down as soon as the opposition gets the ball. PJ definitely deserves credit for spotting him and giving him the chance to prove himself again.

Let's not underplay the importance of Leadbitter on Saturday, either. In the more defensive role, he seemed to thrive.

Isn't this sort of performance precisely what Jewell's been aiming for when he's said that it's going to be a long process getting us to a point where we're promotion candidates? Don't the last few weeks show we're progressing along the right lines? Doesn't this make those calling for Jewell's head a very short time ago look a bit short-sighted?

The energy and drive Luke Hyam, Andy Drury, Lee Martin and Daryl Murphy have put into midfield is a real spark. I hope they keep it up for the rest of the season.

Really like him. Got the potential to be a Town favourite.

He has a point. We comprehensively beat Bristol, rather than squeezing past them at the last gasp as we did away against Coventry in the snow. And this despite David James having one of his good games. The posession and shots were loaded in our favour, they were forced into far more fouls than us. They are well below us in the table and on a poor run, but to progress Town must be able to dominate and finish off these kind of games, not have everyone nervous about a banana-skin slip-up. That will be a solid base for the spectacular, hard-fought wins against the stronger teams in the Championship.

Played OK on saturday , tbh i thought he looked tired for most of the second half making little mistakes here and there which he normally doesnt do , i thought he had a off day but managed to get in the team of the week so what do u know . however i do rate Drury very highly , been one of the main reasons of our change in form . Leadbitter for me looked more relax on the ball and had a great game , harsh on Hyam to be left out but at least thats going to keep him hungry when he does get on the pitch again .

Massive game tonight ! COYB

Although a good result, I disagree with Drury. Bristol had a lot of injuries and have now lost 7 straight away games. Furthermore they were possibly the worst team I have ever seen at PR. We still had to beat them and did so well, but can't get carried away by those type of games. A win at Southampton would be impressive - the Bristol game was just a recent result considering the poor opposition.
