Jewell: Captaincy Change No Slight on Grant
Jewell: Captaincy Change No Slight on Grant
Tuesday, 6th Mar 2012 12:18

Town boss Paul Jewell says Grant Leadbitter shouldn’t feel slighted by Carlos Edwards keeping the captaincy despite the midfielder’s return to the side. Edwards took over as skipper while his former Sunderland colleague was out of the team and kept the armband for Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Bristol City.

Jewell said: “I think sometimes we think too much about the captaincy in football. In cricket and rugby and other sports they have more input. I just said to Grant to go and play, don’t worry about trying to be captain.

“I think Carlos is the type of guy who is so laid back that [he’s unaffected by being captain], although I’m sure he’s honoured by it, and I want him to be honoured.

“I don’t think it affects Grant that much but I just wanted to make sure that all he had to worry about was playing football, if there was anything on his mind.

“It’s not a kick in the teeth, it’s just that Carlos has done the job fine and it’s no big deal to me, I’ve got to be honest.

“In Italy, the guy who has got the most caps gets the armband, a lot of the time goalkeepers get it. I just don’t think it’s that big a deal.”

Think he will play better when not captain. Should never been captain imo.

Now that we've got a balanced midfield and a settled formation I think Leadbitter will show his true potential.. he clearly has a lot more natural talent than Hyam just needs to show it more consistently.

Edwards has the most Town appearances, closely followed by Leadbitter.

Have to agree Leadbitter is not captain material..... i still cant work out if i like him as a player or not.. i think he has bags of talent im just not sure why we are not seeing it? I think maybe in a decent attacking team he maybe able to show a little more of what he is made of. Saturday he for me was passing sideways or backwards far to often, but just occaisonaly came out with a really decent pass. he made himself available for the ball at all times and worked hard, so i was more impressed than of late. if we could bring the best out of him and give him a new contract much cheaper than replacing! I think Luke has a future but not sure he is the here and now week in week out, contriversial but my opinion.

We haven't had a really decent captain since Jason DeVos.

i reckon we shld just make carlos full time! He loves the club and wants to stay, so let's give him that new contract and give him the chance! As for leadbitter, i think he can still do it for the town. Maybe this downgrade in pressure will mean he starts thinking about attack rather then pointlessly organising a team where he has to stay near the defence so that he can communicate with them! COYB!!!
3 points tonight!!

If Jewell is serious about building for the future then i don't think it should be Edwards or Leadbitter (33 year old and someone who isn't actually any good and won't sign a new contract too) i'd personally give it to Drury after the way he's been playing.

Not only has Grant made the right back slot his own despite all the criticism, he is captain as well. Who would have thought it?

bluelady..yeah,think you're right,Jim did take over from DeVos - think DeVos retired in Joe Royle's 3rd season & Jim took over for Joe's last season.

I stand corrected,Jim was the last great captain we had.

that was my memory lightenboy but the last few seasons all have blended into one! Massive Jim fan as a captain, total commitment to the course and not afraid to lead by example but also give his team a good kick up the backside if they didnt perform. we do miss that. having said that I like Edwards quiet confidence, as soon as there is an incident on the pitch he is over to the ref to sort it out, i think its probably a shame he didnt have the armband before....

Hearing him interviewed, was like getting blood from a stone.Zero personality and therefore not very inspirational.Plus by not signing a new contract,he is showing no commitment to the club.
He did have a decent game against BC, but lacks creativity.

Grant Leadboots shouldn't even be at Ipswich let alone a captain!

Completely pointless having a player who may leave as a captain. Ditto therefore Edwards. PJ needs to look to the future. Now is the time to do that - particularly with little left to play for.

Leadboots is the Jamie Carragher of the Championship - solid, but very rarely passes the ball forward.
