Jewell: Win Was Deserved
Jewell: Win Was Deserved
Saturday, 31st Mar 2012 18:11

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his side deserved their 1-0 home win against Barnsley and was frustrated that the margin of victory wasn’t larger with scorer Daryl Murphy and Lee Martin both missing good chances.

Jewell said: “I think we deserved it. I think we should have been out of sight. We missed three or four gilt-edged chances at 1-0 and we nearly paid the price.

“I think sometimes we get a little bit too cocky when things are going well. We’ve had two one-on-ones with the goalkeeper and not hit the target.

“We fully deserved it but because our lack of ruthlessness or not being clinical enough we’ve ended up having to rely on Arran to make a really good save not so far from the end.

“On the balance of play I thought we were the better team, but I’m a little bit disappointed that we didn’t see them off.”

The Blues boss is pleased that his side have continued their good run, stretching their home unbeaten record to eight matches and having lost only twice in 13 overall.

He says it’s important to keep that up with one eye already on the 2011/12 campaign: “The end of the season is important because whatever happens this season, hopefully if you can have a good finish, it can keep up the momentum towards next season.

“We’re delighted to win 1-0 but if our standards are going to be higher, and we want them to be, we’ve got to just make sure we don’t over-elaborate.

“At times I think we can be over-elaborate when there’s no need to, complicate the game when there’s no need to, and like today we’re waiting for that final whistle.”

But overall, after completing March’s marathon of eight fixtures having picked up 15 points and only losing once, Jewell is pleased with his squad, particularly their form at Portman Road: “I think the players deserve terrific credit because they’ve won six out of the last seven home games and up until then we have been very edgy at home.

“We were quite flat in the first half, started the second half really well and got the goal. We should have been three or four up, didn’t take our chances and Barnsley are a good team, they’ve got good footballers and they were always going to push us back.”

Scorer Daryl Murphy was pleased to net for the fourth time since rejoining the Blues on loan from Celtic: "I was delighted with the goal and it was a good win for us.

"Chops played me in with a great pass and I managed to hold off the defender before firing into the corner.

"I actually thought it was going to come back off the post, but thankfully it went it and I think overall we were worthy of the win."

Tykes boss Keith Hill also thought Town deserved the win: “To be honest, it would have been harsh on the opposition [if Barnsley had equalised] with the way they started the second half. They huffed and puffed themselves in the first half, a lot of long distance speculative shots at goal, nothing really got through.

“But the way they started the second half and the way we started was disappointed from our aspect, but obviously encouraging for Ipswich’s point of view.

“The manner in which they scored the goal was disappointing from a defensive point of view, but after that, on the counter-attack, maybe they should have sealed it more comfortably.

“I can’t be too disappointed with the courage that my players showed, the endeavour, the effort and the commitment, but we’re not making good decisions in the final third, and that’s obvious, especially away from home.”

Shouldn't that be 2012/13?

A good win, three points and a clean sheet means a job done well. Let's see a repeat of it against Derby.

The players are doing well.We have some excellent players.

The management team needs to up their game

Easy 1-0 really, pity we wasted several easy chances, would be nice to go unbeaten to the end of season.

I love ALB, worth the entrance fee alone.

Sign Murphy. Will be considered for POTY by me.

Sounds like another game we only woke up until the second half, it would be nice to see us play 90 minutes of good football! but I'll take 1-0 wins each week until the end of the season.

Well, I think we can all agree that that wasn't the most pulse-racing match.

ALB proved why he isn't a no.1 keeper, too inconsistent for me. Back four untroubled. Drury good. Leadbitter utterly anonymous. Martin looked very jaded, as did Chopra, as did JET to a certain extent. My next comment might be controversial, but I thought Murphy was quite poor. Got his goal, but other than that I felt he contributed little. In general though he's been excellent this season, but this just wasn't his best game and maybe he needs a rest as well.

Would love to see the likes of Hyam, Scotland, Stevenson, Carson and perhaps Cropper play. ALB and RW aren't going to be our first choice next season, so why not give him a chance? Play-offs out of reach now.

Garv agree Murphy was my mom today. Thought Edwards had a great game too.... def some comedy moments in defence, and ALB made some good stops but had my heart in my mouth so many times!!!! Del boy had a much better game and picked out some good passes. Creswell poor first half better second. Would have conceded late on in previous games so def progressing but not a game I will rem as a classic ....

Really good game but we seem to be a 2nd half team! Have to stand up for ALB. Give the guy a break. Doesn't matter how he does it, the ball didn't go in the net. He did his job, just not in the fashion some people demand.

Another 3points and the best news is that PR is starting to become a fortress again. That's 8 home games unbeaten and 20pts from a poss 24 at home. Edwards again had a good game, as did Drury and Murphy.

Wasn't a perfect performance but we really should have won by 3 or 4. ALB is really a good number 2 to have as he is a true team pro although his concentration/ability was summed up by a fantastic save and nearly an emabarrising og.

Lots to build upon for next year and good news re JS - just Leadbitter if he wants it.

Great to see the team of 62, the respect from both sets of fans/teams and I am sure Crawford would have done a better job than any of the Barnsley strikers who look poor!

Fourth - We've won, kept a clean sheet and could have scored 4. The fact the players are 'excellent' is due to the management, the training week in week out and the belief in the team instilled through many varying factors but one of them being the management!

Every time you post it never makes sense...

Big three games coming up now, all win able. 9 points the requirement but the starting 11 needs a fresh introduction for me. Carson, Bullard or Stevenson to start.

Good win today and agree with ivorfeeling, finally some consistency at home and more heads in the ground taking it back up to 20 thousand +. Looking forward to the end of the campaign and the summer transfers ahead.

I have to say i am baffled by some of the comments on here

Leadbitter utterly anonymous
cresswell poor in the first half.

Clearly these comments show a real lack of knowledge of the game. Leadbitters job is to keep the ball moving left or right to areas of pitch least defended, and Cresswel did everything right first half and only one attack came down his side.

I agree Murphy was quiet, but town dominated the game, over elaborated to much and became sloppy in retaining the ball 2nd half which gave Barnsley some encouragement.

Both LB and Drury pressed and worked well and used the ball well in possession. Carlos Edwards was very good today as well.

ALB just can't seem to win with some fans? A clean sheet on his first game back and he cannot have much confidence when he keeps being dropped for "loan" keepers, well done today and hopefully a full run till the end of season will do him the world of good.

Gazelle added 22:37 - Mar 31
ALB made a couple of crucial saves in the second half but needs a few more games to regain his confidence. Leadbitter anonymous, not from where i was sitting.

I agree with TownOnTheUp, Murphy was poor today, goal aside, and ALB is too inconsistent, make two great saves but also had two very nervy moments, and his kicking was awful!
A scrappy game of football, not one for the neutrals, we were the better of two poor teams today!!!

Hard to believe SOME posters are STILL moaning on here! Probably those in the SBR Lower who booed in the 94th minute when we decided to play keep-ball instead of looking for number two. STAGGERING!

Moan, moan, moan. We could beat Barcelona in the Champions League final and some wouldn't be happy.
Yes, good money is paid to watch a game and whilst I understand some people want to see 'pretty' football for their money, sometimes you just have to win ugly. How many titles have Man Utd won that way?
Get with it, we're only eight points from the play offs and although it's a long shot, we could well end up not too far away, which if we do, it'll be the highest we've finished in a few seasons.
Well done Jewell for the run you've managed to get the players on, well done to the players whose heads could have dropped after losing seven in a row, but no, we're now in top six form and hopefully the momentum will carry on into next season.
COYB!!!

Wrexham to be honest I was disgusted to see Ipswich Town the club I love, playing keep ball in the corner though. Quite a few people in fairness showed their disagreement with this in the upper sir bobby where I was as well. It's not something we often see and not something we like to see. (Me having £3 on 2-0 had nothing to do with it!)

If you see me post regularly though you'll know I'm not a 'moaner'.

Great to see PJ already has his eyes on this season.

Garv, how disgusted would you have been if we went for 2-0 and they caught us on a quick break to equalise? Knowing how many times we've conceded at the death of games I'd say it was a professional way to see out the game.

Still, guess some people always have to find something to moan about.

How some fans can criticise keep-ball tactics is totally beyond me. How many times.have you seen goals conceded when a team are polishing for a goal and concede on the counter? Couldnt fans be happy if we won 1-0 all season and topped the league? Keeping the ball and 'being boring' shows composure, bravery and intelligence. Criticise it f you want, but without it we might nit have won the points

buryblue77 added 10:34 - Apr 1
Haarlem and Durham, well said. These, however are the fans who would criticise the team if they went for the 2-0, and conceded, they'd moan about how we should have played keep ball and just closed out a 1-0 win. Just can't please some people!!

BuryBlue..again a very honest post, 3 points and a clean sheet and we could have scored more. Nobody had a great 90 mins today,Nobody had a poor 90 mins. It was a tepid affair in the first half, improved in the second. With all the players huffing and puffing.

I would rather a result like this, than how spam did today, they totally outplayed reading first half, yet went in behind, and subsequently lost. History will only show the result. The end of the season will be about the results of the 46 Games. So bring on the ugly wins as well.

I want to give a special mention to Murphy, very much an unsung hero. I hope we offer him a deal and keep him. Some people who post on here( not all) only seem to judge a player on what he does with the ball, but its just as important what they are doing when they havent got the ball. Murphys work off the ball is to be applauded.

No such thing as a poor 3 points, so much to be pleased about. Portman Road is again becoming a fortress, not since Magiltons time has this been the case....coyb
