Scotland Signs Contract Waiver
Scotland Signs Contract Waiver
Saturday, 31st Mar 2012 18:15

Town boss has confirmed that Jason Scotland has agreed to waive the clause in his contract entitling him to an additional year on his current wages. Another two league starts would have triggered the clause in the deal the Trinidadian signed after joining the Blues from Premier League Wigan in August 2010.

Jewell said: “He’s signed a waiver regarding the clause in his contract that gave him an extra year on his contract [at his current wage].

“We want to keep Jason but he’s realised that he won’t be able to get the wages that was on in that last year.

“It’s very commendable from Jason, he’s shown commitment and we want him to be here next year.”

The Blues boss says discussions are ongoing with the 33-year-old regarding a new contract.

Not wanting to be Mr Pessimist but how is this a sure sign of commitment? Is this not "if i can't start games and get myself in the shop window then no club are going to come in for me and i am stuck in?"!

Hope JS stays and think he will but i have seen more commitment from my 1st wife;-)

cooper4england - it shows commitment in that he's not willing to hold the club to ransom over his contract. Circumstances (e.g. an injury to Chopra) could force Jewell to play him anyway, thus earning Scotland a lucrative contract extension (probably better than he could get elsewhere) next season. He's given up that chance of a big payday.

Also, if he is doing it just to be in the shop window, that only means he'll be wanting to perform at his very best during the remainder of the season to show himself off (that's not to say I think he's holding back now), which is to our advantage.

To be honest here, I dont think he would get more or the same wages at any other club, so his option is really not that huge as we think, but the fact that he agrees on it is terrific and he shows he cares about the club. Very good!

The commitment that Jason has made before the season even started with his massive effort in getting fit and his ability to score important goals when under pressure, puts him in the category for player of the year in my book. Sorry cooper4england, you're way off the mark.

Excellent news. Would think he will start at least 1 of the 2 easter matches as Chopra is somewhat out-of-sorts at the moment.

Handy player from the bench for next season, the team ethics sounds far more promising without so many loan players around, hope Daryl Murphy stays next season too.

Edwards has signed a new contract on reduced terms and now Scotland has waived his contractual entitlement ahead of hopefully agreeing reduced terms also - this is good news and good business by the club. We aspire to be a Premiership club, but a solvent one, these are the type of whole hearted players with upper-Championship/lower-Premiership quality that we need in the squad to achieve that. The third part of the equation, but the less likely part, is Leadbitter.
While the earning potential for Scotland and Edwards has lowered due to their age, a 26 year old playing as he has been of late has every right to demand and expect a lucrative contract. He is a good player who would not be out of his depth in any of the squads in the bottom half of the Premiership; where he could expect £15k a week. Hopefully he sees the potential and building momentum here and accepts less than that for the next year to give promotion another go, when he can look for a pay rise & bonuses.

Great news and fantastic news for my son, Michael, who's a big fan of Jason and wanted him to stay at the club. Committed and decent fella as well. Good for Jason and good for Mikey !

Well done Jason! Great news. Still wouldn't blame him getting a better deal elsewhere! Scotland has been a good signing for this club - a 100% man.

However fans need to realise that both Edwards and Scotland are coming to the end of their careers, and have had some very decent contracts in their time. This does NOT mean that Leadbitter should follow suit and people should get off his back. At 26 he has an obligation to his family. I wouldn't expect him to take a 2/3 pay reduction.

A couple of seasons ago no players would have accepted pay cuts or contract waivers. How football at championship level is changing and the players and their agents will have to be realistic. Lets be honest their not actually going to be on the bread line are they. Taking a 30% pay cut on £12-£15k is still good money for a championship player.

Indeed good news as he is without doubt a good squad player. Leadbitter will more than likely go Middelsborough as they have already had an offer accepted, this is of course only romours.

Good! Don't expect him to start every week, but he can still do a job for us. Glad to have him on board (or almost on board - I assume the new deal isn't finalised yet).

on a turnover of around £16m i would expect to see around £12m on wages next year...... with a squad of 30 that makes average maximum wage about £8k per week, or £400k per year..... thats not a bad wage really is it?
