Former Loanee Fuller Linked
Former Loanee Fuller Linked

Town, Wigan and Cardiff are reportedly interested in out-of-contract Stoke striker Ricardo Fuller, who is set to leave the Britannia Stadium this summer. The 32-year-old previously spent time on loan with the Blues towards the end of the 2005/06 season, scoring two goals in three games as well as picking up a red card which brought his spell to an early end.

Then-boss Joe Royle was keen to sign the Jamaican international from Southampton on a permanent basis that summer but the £500,000 fee was beyond the club at the time and Fuller joined Stoke, where he has enjoyed a highly-success six-year spell, helping them into the Premier League in 2007/08.

However, the ex-Preston, Portsmouth and Crystal Palace man has had limited opportunities this season and is now looking to move on having made 135 starts and 70 sub appearances for the Potters and scoring 50 goals.

While the Blues are likely to be in the market for another striker this summer, a move for another veteran frontman such as Fuller would be a surprise with 33-year-old Jason Scotland expected to remain at the club for a further year.

Can't see this one happening myself, unless I'm very much mistaken I think Jewell has learned from his veteran mistakes, even said as much himself.

Good God no!

Another ageing player on high wages.

We will be in a real pickle when Jewell goes.

My first reaction was 'no thanks' as he's 32 and past his Premiership sell-by-date. But then I remembered the Jason Roberts impact at Reading. My guess is that it'll only happen if Scotland doesn't sign up for next season

If there is any truth to this either my time machine works and I've travelled back to April 2011 or Jewell is going to make exactly the same mistakes again!!

Rather have him than Scotland, one or the other, but not both.

Good point about Roberts, JimmyJazz - the trouble is that there are decent veterans out there, but there's many more has-beens and it's very hard to know in advance which one you're getting. Who knows what Fuller would be like?

Suppose it's a bit like buying players from Ireland - Reading got the likes of Kevin Doyle and Shane Long... while we got George O'Callaghan and Colin Healy. *rolls eyes*

Don't know where I heard it from but I seem to recall that the £500k price tag Royle was quoted for Fuller back in 2006 was subsequently slashed for Stoke and they got him for £120k?

I'd rather give Ronan Murray a run in the team.

I think he'd be a good signing, far better than jason roberts in my opinion and look how good he's been! He'd be a much better quality "ageing" player than the likes of bowyer and bullard this season

32 bound to get offered a great retirement deal here then

Surco72 added 10:37 - Apr 17
Yes thats right Newboy ,because there are no good players over the age of 32 ?
Better to play unproven youngsters just because they are young and think they are good

For every Jason Roberts, there is a Nathan Ellington.

No thanks, young and hungry players from the lower divisions

Think it would be better getting Connor Wickham back on a years loan as he hasn't featured much at Sunderland

Should just stick with Chopra, give scotland another year, especially on recent performances, i for one have been very impressed.

Then i'd say try and get Will Keane on season long loan from Man Utd, maybe with a small fee involved so theres no call back clause.

For every Jason Roberts, there is a Nathan Ellington.

You're comparing apples with pears. Ellington is only 30 so not quite the elder statesman that's under discussion. He's never been an established Premier League striker and hasn't been any good for many years now. Guys like Roberts and Phillips have been established Premier League strikers and when they got older their class allowed them to flourish at Championship level after their Premier League sell-by-date. So the question is, would Fuller do the same? In my opinion he probably would

"there are no good players over the age of 32 ? "

So if you're over 30 your career is over?

Ricky lambert is 30 and top goal scorer in the league.
Marlon king 32 and Kevin Phillips 38 have scored 16 this season. Joint 4th top goalscorers in the league. Yakubu 30 and scored 16 goals,
van persie is 29 and top goalscorer in the premiership.
grant holt 31, 13 goals.

I'm not saying fuller would be a good signing but don't say players are bad because of their age.

did anybody watch matt ritchie in the cup final? He was dreadful! i would much prefer to have a premiership striker than a league 2 striker. James coppinger stayed with doncaster to help them and not for money, Shows commitment!

ade itfc .. i think you have missed my point or sarcasm ,i was raising the same reasoning as yourself ,aimed at the constant bashing of the manager by some for signing anyone over the age of 30 ,rather than play our youth team .
I for one would rather have Fuller leading the line than Murray for next season ,if we were talking Rhodes well thats a different story

If we're looking for premier league want-aways, I'd rather see us linked with Simon cox, only 24!
