Wright Could Stay at Town
Wright Could Stay at Town
Tuesday, 17th Apr 2012 14:58

Town manager Paul Jewell says it’s possible that keeper Richard Wright could remain with the Blues next season. The 34-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the campaign, has made only one appearance during his third spell with the club and is expected to be out of action until the end of the season with a knee injury.

Despite his lack of involvement, Jewell says Wright could stay at Portman Road: “It’s a possibility. He’s one of those lads who is out of contract and we need to make the decision.”

In January, Wright spent time on trial with MLS side Dallas FC but Jewell says there has been no progress on that front: “I don’t think that’s going to happen now. He went over there but I think their season started quite a while ago.

“I had a brief chat with him the other day just in general and I asked him about America and he doesn’t think that looks like it’s going to happen.”

on a pay per game basis and maybe as a view to joining at goalkeeping coach at some point not a bad idea. Certainly not worth keeping on a perm deal though, been injured a lot this season and he hasnt even played (wellmaybe one or two games??)

If he can stay fit I'd happily have him here as a number two keeper (as long as he accepts that as part of his contract) I don't think he's consistent enough in either performances or fitness to be a number one.
Whilst there are many on here who don't rate ALB I think he's a perfectly decent keeper, so if we manage to sign someone like Brad Guzan (who has been linked with us) we'll have three good keepers.

Ricardo Fuller would do better in goal and he's only 31. Splash the cash and get someone new please with ALB as No2. Wright is now not good enough might be ok for Ipswich Wanderers Or Whitton Utd. Get RID.

No chance, the manager is just saying stuff here for the sake of it. For the value he'd be to the side (presuming we get Guzan or someone similar) he would not be worth a salary other than what Cody Cropper is on now. Wouldn't be surprised if ALB 'moved on' during the summer though.

bluelady - completely agree. Goal-keeper coach is a great call. Sadly, Richard is past his best and has a poor inhury record. It is clear though that we will need to invest in a new No. 1 in the Summer.

i'd like to see what cody cropper is like in first team action before we rush to bring in another goalie

This is a bit worrying! It doesn't sound like some of the players we are apparently already looking to sign for next season, includes a new 'keeper. If we had then surely RW would not be in his thoughts at all??

Even if we sign two keeprs i'd keep him on a pay as you play, and get him in on the coaching side too. His experiance at premier league and international level surely would help and inspire the next generation of keepers coming through.

He should join Pabs at Big Dong FC in Vietnam

Do you just ignore all the errors ALB makes to come to that conclusion?

jas0999 ..for once i fully agree with you and think we should invest big ,as a solid goalkeeper can make the difference to an ordinary defence . And the difference between playoffs /promotion or another season of mid table boredom

"i'd keep him on a pay as you play"

unfortunately that is a bit of an urban myth as players require signing on fee and a 'retainer' - no player will simply register with a club, train, attend games home and away on the basis he might get paid he actually goes on to the pitch

yes, his fees/earnings will be more skewed towards appearances but it is not a cost free exercise

what is of concern is this suggests the cost cutting could be even deeper than we thought, not a happy thought with three teams coming down from the Premier League with more money in parachute payments than we have in total

chuck into the mix Charlton, one of the Sheffields and a couple teams who missed out in the play offs and our task looks that much harder

Well you lot on here are a cheerful bunch, when he first came back he was great for us, OK injury wise there is a question mark, but worth keeping him on the staff. I like Wrighty, he has been a good servant to the club and deserves some respect, but then that's too much to ask from some of you so called experts on here!
Sign him up PJ

For the love of pete - WHY!!!
Oh yes lets keep employing a keeper who is never fit when you need him, and third choice when hopefully we get a proper one by next season, & a c/h & a r/b, & a .......
Guess the physio might have had some input on this with all the cut backs the club are trying to bring in.

Wright has been a truly great player.
But is now unreliable. Physically.
If he is honest he will recognise this and talk to management on that basis.

ALB is our number 1...nuff said. Cropper our number 2 and let's build on that and no more bloody loan keepers please. Terrible man-management in that area. Oh and bring back Peters..

Well said algarvefan some common sense among the crap spouted by most on this site. Just the fact they are saying that a goalkeeper is too old at 34 shows their lack of knowledge.

Langdon_Blue added 20:05 - Apr 17
WickedBlue - not one post mentioned his age?? Or are you reffering to what is being said in town? It's his fitness and injury problems that I think most posters are comenting on. RW was incredible for us during the 90's and early 2000's but you cant sign him purely because he was such a star 12 years ago...

Wright as 1 of 2 back-up keepers with ALB to a good long-term number 1 would be a good thing. Feel safer with 3 keepers really, you're covered for injuries then and competition to keep you on your toes.

RimmersBrace added 15:16 - Apr 18
RW is on a pay and play already. So although Ipswich hold his reg, he is on a zero length contract term. Hence he was able to talk to Dallas and indeed anyone else.

will4 added 16:44 - Apr 20
ALB would be good when played with a decent back four infront of him, has had quite a few good games this season with a ever changing back four, quality no2 though providing we get a new no1, I'd be happy with him as number one though, if we get a couple of cb's and a rb.
