Delaney Envious of Reading
Delaney Envious of Reading

Experienced Town defender Damien Delaney admits he is envious of Reading and their promotion to the Premier League.

The Royals clinched their top-flight return in midweek with a 1-0 home win over lowly Nottingham Forest and Delaney was among an armchair audience of millions who tuned in to view highlights of the Madejski Stadium party.

Delaney, 30, said: “I’ve never had a promotion with any of my clubs. I was watching the interviews with the Reading players in the dressing room after they clinched their promotion and Jobi McAnuff was saying that he had waited so long for that moment.

“I could identify with how he felt. I was sitting there thinking ‘I’ve been waiting just as long’ but fair play to him. To get promotion is just reward for him and hopefully one day — next season would be great — that will be me with Ipswich.”

Should Coventry, as expected, be relegated to English football’s third tier it will leave Ipswich as the longest-serving members of the Championship, a run that started in 2002 after George Burley’s team took the plunge.

Delaney added: “I don’t suppose the fans are happy with that but when you look at what has happened to some other clubs who have been relegated and then gone down to League One, I suppose you have to look at is a ‘glass half full’ situation, although we all know where we would like to be ideally.

“It’s not panned out that way for the last how many seasons. I keep wanting to see us in the top half of the table. When I’m sitting at home watching Sky Sports News on the telly and that table keeps flashing up, it grates that we’re still in the bottom half.

“Yes, I agree there has been progress in recent months but unfortunately, because of too many draws, we haven’t gone as high as I would have liked.”

Well if we sign Guzan in goal, then get Jason Pearce and St Ledger to play at the back together (Smith providing competition). Then we sign Jack Hunt (lightning pace and 10+ assists from RB) from Huddersfield (or possibly Joel Ward) to provide competition for Carlos at right back and also offer a right wing option. Then up top we sign Gary Madine (Sheff Wed) and Ricardo Fuller (could be a very similar signing to Jason Roberts at Reading) as imposing ariel threats and foil to Chopra and Scotland, then we could very much be up there next season!!! lol.

You see this is why I find it so utterly ridiculous that a significant proportion of our so-called fans boo every time we don't win a game by the proverbial country mile. For 40 years this small provincial town club of ours punched massively above its weight. We spent the vast majority of that time in the top tier of English football and for a number of years we were towards the top end of it and won major silverware to boot.

Of course we all want those glory days to return and, with a little patience, I am sure that they will. But at least we have never had to go through the heartache that the likes of Manchester City, Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Leicester, Southampton, Forest, Norwich & Charlton have all had to endure while we have been treading water in the Championship. And now, in all probability, we can add Portsmouth and Coventry to that list too. These are all teams who are either as big as or bigger than Ipswich. So I really do wish the boo-ers and moaners would explain to me why we have to put up with their negativity and unachievable expectations.

We have no divine right to be in the promised land but things could be a whole lot worse!

I think you are all being harsh on Delaney. He may not be the most polished centre back in the Championship, but he's put in a lot of solid performances and made some mistakes (who hasn't? A certain England centre back with the initials RF has done that too quite often.) One thing you can't fault Damien for is his total commitment, and for that I respect him. He does his best and you can't ask for more than that.

I agree with Delaney. Sadly, Reading have a excellent manager who knew it was absolutely essential to build from the back. They have an excellent defence. After a season and a half in charge, regretably PJ is still to address ours. That's poor management and the why Reading are going up and we are sitting 15th.
