Two goals from Andy Keogh and one from former Blue Liam Trotter saw Millwall to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Town in Portman Road’s final game of the season. Keogh put the Lions ahead after three minutes, old boy Trotter added the second just after the hour mark, then, after Grant Leadbitter had had a penalty saved, Keogh netted the third late on.

Paul Jewell made two changes to his side with Ryan Stevenson and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas replacing Jason Scotland and the injured Lee Martin. Byron Lawrence, 16, was named amongst the subs.

Millwall included ex-Blue Liam Trotter, while their other former Town man, left-back Scott Barron, was on the bench.

The visitors went in front in the third minute when Trotter escaped down the Blues’ right and crossed into the path of Andy Keogh. The Irishman, who had a trial with the Town Academy before opting to join Leeds as a 16-year-old, diverted the ball goalwards and Aaron Cresswell could only help it into the net as he tried to clear off the line.

Town carved out a chance to get back on terms in the sixth minute, Andy Drury and Stevenson, playing in the role behind lone striker Michael Chopra, exchanging passes but the former Luton man scuffed his shot wide from the edge of the box. On eight, Leadbitter similar failed to hit the target but from further out.

On 15, after more good work from Stevenson, Murphy crossed to Chopra at the far post from where the Blues striker headed into the sidenetting. Moments later, Stevenson scraped wide.

Millwall, who deserved their lead after a scrappy opening from Town, weren’t far away from making it 2-0 in the 20th minute when skipper Paul Robinson headed James Henry’s left-wing corner across the face of goal. Seconds later, the dangerous Keogh shot wide from the Lions’ right.

On 25 Millwall keeper Maik Taylor tipped over Leadbitter’s 25-yard strike, then Drury half-volleyed high and wide from the 18-yard line.

Town, who were starting to find their feet after an under-par start, should have been back on terms on the half hour when skipper Edwards whipped in a teasing cross from the right and Chopra headed straight at Taylor when he should have scored.

Emmanuel-Thomas failed to really get hold of a 25-yarder on 32, Taylor claiming easily down to his left, then on 41 the former Arsenal man headed a Damien Delaney cross over, the centre-half having made a rare foray down the left.

In injury time of what had been a not hugely entertaining first half, a poor Lee-Barrett kick allowed James Henry, a Town target last summer, a shot at goal from 25 yards but the former Reading man missed the target.

Referee Colin Webster brought to a close a first period which was fairly typical of games at this time of the season between two sides with nothing to play for.

Town had been caught asleep early on when they conceded the goal and took some while to come into the game. Chopra should have equalised as the Blues began to threaten more towards the break, although without showing too much urgency or any of the fluency of Tuesday’s performance against Birmingham.

In order to improve matters, manager Jewell switched Stevenson for Jason Scotland at half-time, the Blues switching to Tuesday’s 4-4-2 formation.

Town began the half more strongly, Leadbitter seeing a 48th minute shot deflect behind, then after a long spell of possession following the corner Chopra curled the ball over.

But the visitors also began to create one or two chances, on-loan Spurs man Harry Kane shooting over in the 51st minute, before Keogh claimed a penalty after falling as Lee-Barrett dived at his feet. There seemed to be little contact and referee Webster was rightly unimpressed.

The Blues were close to getting level in the 58th minute when Chopra escaped the offside trap down the left and crossed low, the ball hitting Paul Robinson and then the post. It ran out to to Scotland, whose shot was blocked with Town claiming handball. Moments later, Cresswell’s cross from the left struck Jimmy Abdou, the Blues again unsuccessfully calling for a penalty for the use of hands.

Ibrahima Sonko, who has been told he will be released at the end of the season, replaced Cresswell on 62, the youngster having suffered what looked like a hamstring injury. Delaney moved to left-back and Smith to the left central defensive role.

Moments later, the Lions were 2-0 in front. Sonko half-cleared a cross from the right to the edge of the area and Ipswich-born ex-Blue Liam Trotter slammed home.

Emmanuel-Thomas’s cross-shot from the right was deflected wide on 66, then two minutes later Drury hit another not overly taxing low shot through to Taylor, who hadn’t been tested enough despite the Blues registering a number of shots on target.

Josh Carson replaced Chopra on 69, Murphy joining Scotland up front and Emmanuel-Thomas switching to the left.

Millwall were by now well on top and passing the ball around far more slickly than Town had at any stage. However, the Blues came close to a goal in the 77th minute when Leadbitter fed Scotland inside the area, veteran keeper Taylor getting down to his right to save well. From the corner, Delaney headed wide.

Drury saw a shot blocked at one end then Kane beat Sonko all too easily but struck Smith at the other with Kenny Jackett’s men looking much the more convincing in and around the area. Town continued to push and on 82 Sonko headed straight at Taylor from a long throw.

The largely uninspiring Blues were handed a lifeline out of nothing in the 84th minute when Jack Smith tripped Drury as the midfielder broke into the area, a decision strongly contested by the Lions. Leadbitter took the spotkick and hit it low to Taylor’s left, the Northern Ireland international getting down to block and then recovering to stop and hold on to the former Blues skipper’s rebound.

As Town continued to look for a goal, Henry’s pass sent Keogh away into the Blues’ half unchallenged. The Irishman rounded the advancing Lee-Barrett with ease before tapping home.

The final whistle signalled brief booing with the Blues having been very much second best after conceding in the third minute.

Town started to make some headway towards the break and Chopra should have equalised with his header but other than that there was little sign of a fightback.

After Trotter had scored Millwall’s second, the Blues never really looked like getting back into the game until the penalty with Leadbitter’s miss summing up a thoroughly disappointing afternoon.

The third goal added to the misery with few fans staying behind for the now annual players’ lap of appreciation, far from the way manager Jewell will have wanted his first full home campaign to have come to an end.
