Jewell: We've Made Mistakes
Jewell: We've Made Mistakes
Tuesday, 24th Apr 2012 09:53

Boss Paul Jewell has admitted that both he and owner Marcus Evans have got things wrong since they came to the club as the Blues come to the end of their 10th successive season in the Championship no nearer a return to the Premier League after another lower mid-table finish.

Jewell, whose side could register the club’s lowest finish for 55 years if they drop from their current position of 15th to 17th after Saturday’s final game at Doncaster, admits it’s been a poor last decade for the club: “It is a depressing record, I guess, but you have to ask why we have we been in this league for 10 years. There might be a few things.

“Obviously there’s been a lack of a winning culture, sometimes a lack of investment, sometimes too much investment, sometimes expectations have been unrealistic.”

He says that in football, historic reputations or large followings aren’t what win you promotions or trophies: “Ipswich has got a great name in the game, but, as I’ve said before, as we were getting promoted with Wigan from League One up to the Championship up to the Premiership and getting to the cup final, people kept talking about ‘traditional football clubs’.

“About how Sheffield Wednesday deserved to be in there, how Derby, Ipswich and this club and that club have got massive fan bases.

“That means a great deal but the most important product is getting it right on the pitch and for whatever reasons, we haven’t got it right on the pitch this season and for the last 10 seasons.

“We have to earn the right to be at the top end of the table,” he added. “Being a good team in the past buys you nothing.

“You only get out of this game what you put into it now and sometimes we look back too far. That’s life. It’s not all looking back, we’ve got to look forward.”

Jewell believes the foundations are in place at Town but feels mistakes have been made, both during his time at the club and beforehand: “The infrastructure is here, the owner’s been here four years now. It was a brand new project for him and I think maybe just throwing money at stuff doesn’t always work. You’ve got to have a structure, you’ve got to have a plan.

“I think this year I’ve been guilty of not planning enough by signing too many experienced players. Experienced players are important but getting the blend is vital and I’ve got the blend wrong this year.

“I will take full responsibility for that but life’s about learning from your mistakes. I’ve made a few mistakes.”

Owner Marcus Evans has spent plenty of money since he took charge in December 2007, not least last summer when Jewell brought in 13 new players, but the Town boss says a model of greater stability is what he will be looking towards in future: “Marcus is new to football and maybe he thought we’d throw money at it. When I was at Derby, no one knew who Marcus Evans was.

“Everyone thought that Ipswich were throwing serious money at it and all of a sudden players wanted to go to Ipswich because they were paying [big] wages. That hasn’t worked as yet and I think stability and structure and building is the way we want to go.

“Last year we brought in 13 players but I want to get to the situation where I’m really happy with the group of players that I’ve got and I need two or three players just to tweak it.”

We lost our mojo a decade ago, it flickered back into life with Magilton - our most successful post-Burley manager, but Keane killed it. We want our own, exciting young players, we want to win and we want to believe. It's too painful realising that Those Were the Days now applies equally to 2000-2001 as it does '78 and '81.

Change the record, heard it all before, talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words are all apt sayings, unfortunately there is a dsitinct lack of action at PR and we all know we will only get the dregs that other clubs don't want, never mind, Sol Campbell is available.

Sometimes I wonder how these people get their jobs or make their fortunes because to be honest ITFC have a set of first class fools in charge.
One has more money then sense, lord knows how he made it in the first place, right place right time?
Another thinks it`s ok to let contracts run down and players leave for free plus a whole raft of other errors to numerous to mention.
And then there is PJ, must I thought he was a good fit for the Club and he still is maybe, but way oh way has he not sorted out the bl00dy defence which has been awful for far to long.

This manager is brillant at playing the ole chestnut hindsight,
“I think this year I've been guilty of not planning enough by signing too many experienced players. Experienced players are important but getting the blend is vital and I've got the blend wrong this year.

“I will take full responsibility for that but life's about learning from your mistakes. I've made a few mistakes.”
You have made more than a few mistakes and to be honest anyone on here with a John Gorman type of assistant could of done a better job than you!!!
Marcus Evans has invested a lot of money but not on the right sort of players,
With that the problem seems to lie with the chief exec we have had the right players in the door for them to then sign for someone else add to that to the different styles in management then of course we keep going forwards and backwards. Sort out a plan and stick to it not change it every time it starts to not work.
Can see jewell doing nothing more here than already done and will see another change come next chrIstmas.

The current set up of the combined wisdom of Evans, Clegg and Jewell equals potential bankruptcy, football mediocracy, bullsh,t (very large quantities) constant transfers (quality of players coming in dropping ever more) for me the real threat of relegation and the realisation that this season has been a success compared to the standards set since Evans took over. The only plus if you want to call it a plus was FINALLY sacking Roy Keane (who was appointed by this club he did not just appear)!

“I will take full responsibility for that but life's not about learning from your mistakes. I've had money but buying a CB has never been one of my priories. Ipswich are living in the past, and that's where I like to be, boring everyone about my days at Wigan. Some people say I was lucky having two stikers that could score 60 goals between them but I have to say I am most proud of my personal behavior and being a family man"

Magilton our most successful post-Burley manager? Eh? So 3rd under Royle on almost £0 budget wasn't as success? Or the other play-off place, or the 7th place after having to sell his best players? Bizarre.

I wasn't a massive fan of Royle's as such, because I felt he didn't invest in the youth, but there's no denying the results he got with what was really a very average team.

As for Jewell, he's said all this before. We all know what kind of players we need in the summer. Personally, I'm hoping for 25 year olds, not 20 year old that everyone else seems to think we need. But if he gets those players in we have a good chance next season. We've finished reasonably well (Millwall excepted).

Though selling JET (different story) would be a big mistake.

one word. ADMINISTRATION.

Town's 10 year problem has all stemmed from this, and we are lucky to still be in existance, let alone not relegated over various season overvthe last 10 yrs.

Football aint what it used to be.Too much greed from players and their agents, too much money in the game. The "game of football" has long since been lost. Sad , sad times IMO

Talk about having an excellent grasp of the obvious....it's not like every Town supporter hasn't been pointing out those errors for years. ...and yet, I doubt they'll ever start to listen.

careful Paul - if I went public saying my boss had made mistakes I'd be in big trouble ... but then again, it seems you are already in trouble. Isn't this the last year of your contract? If we can't or wont renew successful players' contracts before they run down to nothing what chance a manager who has not yet ("yet" - for we have to live in faith cos he is all we've got!) done anything to show for the Chairman's investment and faith in him?
Ignore the spec in ME's eye mate - look at the plank in your own.

Well it would seem we have a lot of applicants for the managers job on this site when ME sacks PJ. Oh hold on ME has to go too. Oh well that should help, cos when he goes and we are back to 60M in debt we will be playing in the SIL league and which ever of you bright sparks gets the job will be able to keep your day job and just do this on Saturdays. Brilliant, sorted.

After mistakes with Magic and Keano it was clear that ME expected PJ to do a lot better but sadly PJ hasnt so i dont think anyone can place blame with ME. Unless he forced PJ to sign certian players then this current situation must be PJs and unless he sorts out in summer he wont be here much longer. He was supposed to have learnt from his past experiences so its a bit rich that he now identifies what went wrong!! He's wasted ME money on too many hasbeens and has failed to address the defnsive frailties he inherited.
My only moan about ME is that he's shown little desire to get involved and wants to keep his distance. Unlike other owners we dont know what his plans are and how much he's committed to Town. Without his money we'd be sunk which is fine but i'm not sure that this current model is going to take where we want, things need to change starting with PJ. Either he gets it right or he must go

Apparanetly PJ is going to be appearing on "micro celebrity Mastermind - sex tape special" to be screened on some obscure satellite TV channel just before the start of the new season...specialist subject "stating the bleeding obvious"...he's onto a winner...at last!

YEP, unfortunately first mistake was your appointment PJ.The other mistakes have been of your making.I would rather have seen Chris Hughton appointed, however i went with the flow and was prepaired to give you a chance.I dont see any future success while you PJ are manager, you dont have the ''spark'' let alone the ''fire'' in you to motivate a team.Having listened to you mumbling away in monotone week in week out i can imagine the players are in a state of trance or near comatose, having sat through pre and post match talks. You dont come across as a dynamic motivator of men .I gave up going to matches in December, having decided it was not worth expense or trouble to go and watch the halfhearted shambles we had become used to. Attendances have shown im not alone . I am not expecting a change of manager, and no significant change in performances and results,ITFC are not near Prem club and are more likely to become a League 1 club the way things have been going past 4/5 years.Regarding laps of honour/appreciation , i think if fans were given eggs on entry ,more people would stay on for 10 minutes. No doubt some people will think ive been a bit extreme, but i AM extremely disapointed .
