Jewell to Make Coppinger Enquiry
Jewell to Make Coppinger Enquiry
Saturday, 28th Apr 2012 07:04

Town boss Paul Jewell could renew his interest in Doncaster midfielder James Coppinger this summer. The Blues manager says he will ask his Rovers opposite number Dean Saunders, who played for him at Bradford City, about the midfielder, who was half of a failed joint-bid also involving striker Billy Sharp — now at Southampton — during the last close season when the former Exeter man was valued at £300,000.

Jewell says he’s as yet undecided whether the 31-year-old, who is contracted until 2014, will be on his wish-list this time around: “I don’t know, there’s a lot on the list.

“It depends, I’ll speak with Deano on Saturday to see what the situation with the lad is — if he’s for sale, if he’s for free or whatever. We’ll find out. He’s a good player Coppinger, a quality footballer.”

The Blues boss was keen to add to his midfield options even before Grant Leadbitter’s decision to leave Portman Road.

Meanwhile, we understand that the goalkeeper Jewell was due to meet on Thursday afternoon wasn’t Birmingham’s Colin Doyle, who was linked earlier that day.

Manchester United’s Tomasz Kuszczak remains Jewell’s number one target with Doyle on the longer list of potential alternatives.

Cue the anti 'over-30' brigade. For what it's worth, I think he would be a decent signing on a free or a nominal fee.

If Doyle wants first team football after 10 years as a number 2, I cant see him coming here if we cant promise him the number one shirt.

Does Coppinger play in the middle of the park? got a feeling he was a right winger,
With Jet and possible Edwards if we get a right back where would Coppinger fit in.
Quality player and would be a good addition

Would be very happy if we signed Coppinger and Kuszczak! Regarding age, Jewell said that a blend of youth and experience is key. For what its worth, I think he is spot on and our 'anti over 30 brigade' talk nonsense.

Coppinger would make an excellent addition for anything under 200k. Creative, technically gifted, great delivery from set pieces....well worthy of a place in the starting 16

Forget about the age, he's the kind of player we could easily get a good 3 years out of.

Westcountry, now that could be a good idea, if we started with 16!
Could be a good signing for us and I know the over 30's brigade will love this, but he's 31, not 37. I think most players now still have 5 years left in them when they hit their early 30's.

I commented only last night, that Jewell is likely to renew interest in this lad, given that they have been relegated and he would be cheap.

Would offer more than leadboots ever has, for about a tenth of the price.

Surprised by this. Might signify that a deal for Murphy is not on the cards, although I think Coppinger is more right-sided. Will be interesting to see what replacement for Leadbitter in the middle we go for now.
Pleased to hear that Doyle isn't our no 1 keeper target,I would prefer Kuszczak or Guzan.

right winger, short, old ...can you really see the need when you have Jet there? and Carson as back up

Funny how he can talk to players he supposedly wants but cant even walk out of his office to let others know he doesnt want them. People talk in football no one will want to play for this unprofessional waste of space unless there is no other option

My God! yet another player we could possibly looking at to late in his career!

do we need him the arnswer to that question is no we dont, we have lost leadboots and thank god for that, as a central midfield postions we have 4 in hyam, drury bullard and steverson and i think we are ok there, for the right we have jet and carson, edwards and martin, for the left we have martin who can play there although he is better suited behind the striker, so realey in midfield we are sorted, coppinger is a good player but we also have lawrance coming through as well.
i still believe with the 5 man bench we should go down the dont put a goalie on the there, because the amount of time we need the spare goalie is so remote we are btter of having the extra out field player, and train up some like smith or the spare defender on the banch to do that job if required,

It's not about being 'anti-30 brigade' - it's about PJ saying one thing and doing completely the other! PJ told us he had learnt from his mistakes and was going to look at youth and younger players - build a team for the future. This would not fit into those catagories! Too old - PJ has enough of those.

Can someone answer a couple of questions for me 1; When does the transfer window actually open 2; As next season is starting late does this mean it will start late or that teams will be asked to play the same amount of games but in a shorter period of time. As for coppinger as long as he is fit at 31 who cares I dont see him as an old player. what people have to realise with a squad full of youth you need some older heads to steady the ship at times and if they have quality like Coppinger then why not.

Wasn't Coppinger one of the "double-take" brothers?

Would rather see us go in for George Boyd.

righty added 14:49 - Apr 28
Jewell just said he will not sign Coppinger

TractorBoy666 added 16:12 - Apr 28
Jas, we need experience too. Only youth players in the team would still make us sit around mid-table.

tractorboy2434 added 19:45 - Apr 28
If he wants a creative midfielder why someone who is 31 when Boyd from Posh is available and is only 26, oh yes, sorry, he's cheaper, says it all really
