Jewell Disappointed With Cropper's Agent
Jewell Disappointed With Cropper's Agent
Saturday, 28th Apr 2012 07:00

Boss Paul Jewell has criticised the way Cody Cropper’s agent handled the US U20 goalkeeper’s release by Town. The Blues boss decided not to offer the 19-year-old a new contract on the advice of the club’s goalkeeping staff, who didn’t think the US U20 international was quite up to the required level.

Jewell says he wasn’t happy that the players’ representative spoke to the Atlanta-born keeper before he had: “I was a bit disappointed with his agent because I’d spoken to his agent and his agent went and told the lad before I did. But I explained it to Cody and he understands that that was his agent’s fault.”

The Town manager says the 6ft 3in tall keeper isn’t of the required standard and in any case probably wouldn’t have had too many opportunities if he had been offered terms: “We wish him well, he’s a terrific lad, but I can’t say yes to everybody.

“We had a discussion with the goalkeeping staff and we just think he’s just a little bit short, although not in terms of height, at the moment.”

Fair enough..... Malcolm Webster knows what's required and if he says that he's not good enough then who are we not to trust his judgement ? If Cropper leaving means that we end up with better quality keepers then happy days !

Fair enough if he isn't up to standard but, i am surprised he told his agent before Cropper. That shows a lack of decency towards the lad. I don't blame his agent because he is going to tell him. The first person that should of known was Cropper.
Complete lack of class in my book.

Mossy - agents represent their players. They talk on behalf of them, that's what the players ask of them. Doesn't surprise me that the agent would have been told before the player.

So all the rubbish some people were spouting on here about PJ making the decision against the coaching staff's advice wasnt the case..................what a shock !!

Surely that's what an agents job is - to liase with club for player. Agent represents the player so they are going to keep the player informed of any contract outcome.
Jewell could have phoned Cropper immediately after telling his agent. He always blames other people for his poor management.

There are a couple of people around Portman Road I don't have a lot of faith in, Evans and Clegg if only because their experience was not in football before coming to Ipswich and now with Leadbitter rejecting contract terms late on we see that same situation that they haven't learned to deal with.
In PJ I do trust however and if there is one person to really trust I think it could be Malcolm Webster, I think this guy knows his goalkeeping stuff!

Malcolm Webster was furious about Cropper being released he was not asked his opinion these idiots that believe everything Jewell says should just look back over the last 15 months at his continued misleading supporters

Paul Jewell you are a disgrace! Man management zero . These kids are not playthings for you they are real people and deserve proper treatment even if they dont reach your required levels they work hard for you but seems you dont really care about them. .This would never have happened under previous class managers and people Robson,Burley,Royle,Magilton and yes even Keane. Surely its yr job to get it right. Please Mr Evans bring some class back into the managers office befitting this great club. Get rid of the oiks.

Righty - Think before you speak. We have no cover in that position and would absolutely not be sacking somebody that was deemed to be a great prospect.

safeashouses - what the hell are you on about? He has been told that we won't be offering him a new contract, what's the problem? Is it bad man management, to not automatically offer every player new terms? lol.

Crikey, I can barely believe what I read on here sometimes, just totally idiotic remarks.

righty, how do you know that Malcolm Webster was furious?
I wish people could just get over the Ipswich Town youth system, as I've said in previous posts our youth system hasn't delivered for years, we'd need a where are they now of all the players who have left our club at a young age, because they haven't played in our first team and most are playing lower league/non league or retired.
Since the Burley days you can count on one hand the amount of players who have come through and gone onto better.
Keiron Dyer.
Titus Bramble.
Richard Wright never really made it.
Darren Bent
Jordan Rhodes (although not a fully fledged youth product, he may make it as a Championship/Premier League player but time will tell
Connor Wickham, hasn't made the grade yet at Sunderland.
The last keeper we produced was Lewis Price and he's played 27 games in 5 years since he left.
Get over yourselves about PJ's treatment of the youth, most of them simply aren't good enough and there's not enough money in football now to carry them for the sake of satisfying a few fans who think we have a given right to produce top youth after top youth and be fighting for the Premier League title just because we did 30 years ago. I want the best for my club but times have changed and we need to move with them.

@buryblue77 you talk about Leadbitter rejecting terms and blaming Clegg/Evans. Leadbitter wanted out probably because of the abuse he's received from sections of the crowd. He was never offered a contract and never entered negotiations. However I'm sure some negotiation was done with his agent if he made it clear he wasn't interested in a new contract then the only people you can blame are those who were on 'Leadboots'' back.

It was the "Ipswich way" because we're in Ipswich and it worked.

All PJ has got is his mouth and he couldn't be bothered to use that to tell the player face to face. You're the one who can't handle it.

Well said BuryBlue, completely agree. And Righty, may I ask your age?

Wickets added 10:13 - Apr 28
I tend to agree with Buryblue, a lot of the problems regards bringing young players through have not been helped by the fact that there are now little or no reserve teams playing competitive football around, youngsters have to move to lower league teams to play regular footie and so improve. But also i do feel PJ has seemed reluctant to play Hyam and perhaps if O'conner and Peters had been able to feature more they might have improved instead of becoming disallusioned.

Flounce, flounce, flounce....... what does Malcolm Webster know etc, losing all our young player, blah, blah, blah.

....actually, fair enough decision.

Wickets, the Peters situation is a strange one, I always thought he looked good enough, a bit of a Carlos Edwards type right wing back/right wing, although he's not a youngster any more.
O'Connor, if you're referring to Shane by all accounts had some sort of attitude problem, after all he went out on loan to the lower leagues and didn't feature despite being a good player.
You mention lack of reserve football and it's a significant factor, but haven't we just agreed to play in reserve league football again, so this should help, although how long for? With the fair play rulings coming in a clubs cutting their costs I can see it being looked on as a bit of a luxury in a few years time when it all kicks in fully.

Not true just show what an banker the idiot jewell is how many times on here has he claimed he is talking to players about their contracts ie leadbitter this week he can't be bothered with younger/youth players and treats them with contempt and complete disregard HE IS A DISGRACE TO FOOTBALL AND THE CLUB

I presume those who are saying Jewell should have phoned Cropper to tell him immediately after informing his agent are different people to those who criticised the club for sacking Magilton over the telephone.

It would have been wise for Jewell to make sure the agent was told at a time when Cropper was around for a face-to-face chat straight afterwards but perhaps there were reasons that was not possible and he felt the agent needed to know the situation at the earliest opportunity.

bluesimon added 11:13 - Apr 28
What did he expect the agent to do? NOT tell his client????!

Always speak to the person involved first, it isn't right to hear something like this second hand. It would have been a matter of minutes between telling the player first, then the agent or even speak to them together at the same time!

Tractorog added 11:28 - Apr 28
I don't know enough to judge the decision, but Jewel should not be flippant about releasing the lad. The "though not in terms of height" comment is a mistake.. As was telling the agent first, what did he expect?
Having said that. We all make them.
I think all the Jewel haters though should grow up and just get a bit of perspective. He may or may not be up to the job, but he is not deliberately setting out to ruin the club. You may disagree with his judgement and decisions, but that does not make him a bad man and as none of you have ever managed a team that got promoted to the premiership it does not necessarily make him a bad manager either.

If you want the club or anyone else to speak to you direct, don't employ an agent. Fact.
