Smith at Left-Back at Doncaster
Saturday, 28th Apr 2012 11:44

Tommy Smith is set to start at left-back in place of the injured Aaron Cresswell as Town end their campaign at Doncaster. Ibrahima Sonko, who leaves the club after today’s match, will partner Damien Delaney at the centre of the defence.

Sonko’s inclusion is one of two changes with Lee Martin returning to the team in his role behind lone striker Michael Chopra.

Neither Grant Leadbitter nor Lee Bowyer are included in the squad, while Jimmy Bullard and 16-year-old Byron Lawrence are on the bench.

Youngster Joe Whight was on the bench, Jack Ainsley initially having been named in error. Ainsley travelled by was left out of the 16 along with second-choice keeper Richard Wright, who also leaves the club in the summer. Full match preview here

Town: Lee-Barrett, Edwards, Sonko, Delaney, Smith, Emmanuel-Thomas, Drury, Stevenson, Martin, Murphy, Chopra. Subs: Whight, Carson, Bullard, Scotland, Lawrence.

Doncaster: G Woods, Husband, Hird, Friend, Beye, O'Connor, Gillett, Oster, Coppinger, Hayter, Robert. Subs: Bennett, Bamogo, M Woods, Sullivan, Dumbuya.

Has Smith signed a new deal yet? At least ME will be happy our wage bill must be low enough to comply with the new regs!! Although at this rate we won't have enough players to fulfill all our fixtures! Very worried about the result today

ok'ish sort of side. Perhaps we could see sight of Lawrence for more than 5 mins. How many of that team will be in the starting line up for the first game of the new season?

Interesting that Sonko starts his last game whereas Bowyer and Leadboots are even in the squad, I presume he took his departure in a better manner then they did. Hopefully Smith won't take most of the game getting used to playing wider than normal.
1:3 to Town COYB!

Glad to see Martin playing again in support of Chopra.

Chops hat trick good way to end the season.... maybe top Wickhams hat trick there last season.

Whight should be at left back, and Smith at CB. Put Sonko on the bench if we absolutely need to. What does Whight have to do to get a game, if he can't get a game when our only proper LB is injured, we have nothing to play for, it's the last game of the season, and we're playing a team who're already down?

Daft.

Surprised Sonko starts - as he will leave after today. No different to Leadbitter and Bowyer. Surely giving Whight a chance was a better option?

However, all in all probably the best team we could have put out and am looking forward to finishing the season with a win.

Exactly why we need a left midfielder who can play left back. Smith is not a full back.

Maybe Jewel's having second thoughts about Sonko. It seems strange to play him after he's been told he will be released, in a "nothing game"at the end of the season.

Good chance to get Bullard back in the fold today and give Lawrence 20 Minutes as well.

I am baffled by Jewell's handling of Ainsley. He's given him a new contract, and he always talks positively about him, but if he's not going to use him in a game like this and instead prefers a player who he's releasing, when is he going to?

Maybe, just maybe, Wight hasn't done enough this year to warrant a start? This might be a good wake up call?

Sonko why? Gibe the youngers a run out, nothing to lose! Joker.

I guess Sonks is playing because he wanted to stay and has been gracious about his contract ending. So it will be great to applaud him off when he's subbed.

Sonks is only 6 months older than Delaney and until his injury before Christmas was our best defender imo.

Slightly off topic but just noticed we've scored the same number of goals as Reading this season, just conceded nearly double. Really shows the importance of a solid backline.
