Jacobs Joins Derby
Jacobs Joins Derby
Tuesday, 26th Jun 2012 09:08

Northampton winger Michael Jacobs has completed a move to Derby County after the clubs agreed an undisclosed fee reported to be £450,000. The Blues, Newcastle, Peterborough, Watford, Bristol City and Charlton Athletic were all also believed to be chasing the 20-year-old, but the Rams always appeared to be the frontrunners.

Jacobs, who impressed for the Cobblers in their 2-1 Carling Cup defeat of Town at Portman Road last season, is out of contract this summer but the League Two side were entitled to compensation due to his youth with both clubs keen to avoid going to a tribunal. He has signed a three-year deal.

Elsewhere, the Blues continue to be linked with former loanee Ricardo Fuller, who we reported was the subject of Town enquiries a month ago. Fuller's Stoke contract was up this summer.

Town’s interest in the 32-year-old Jamaican is not an indication that fellow veteran Jason Scotland is moving on. As we reported on Friday, the Trinidadian is set to put pen to paper on his new one-year deal when he returns to the UK from Trinidad ahead of the start of pre-season training next Thursday. Like skipper Carlos Edwards's new terms, the contract will include the option for a further year.

Elsewhere, another former Town loan man, Argentinian Sixto Peralta, now 33, has joined Chilean side Universidad Católica from Romanian club CFR Cluj.

Jacobs was a class act for Northampton against us last season, a great promising talent and really hoped we might have persuaded him to come here, sadly another one lost!

Who cares! Why do TWTD report on other teams? Though they report on Ipswich?

ipswich_crazy2011...it's not reporting on other teams as such...we've been linked with him this summer...so it's more an update.

They report on stories that are of interest to Ipswich fans, as this story is as we were linked with him. Go to www.itfc.co.uk if you want that sort of news.

Although there is no firm evidence that we were after these players, it would seem more than likely that we were. It's very worrying that other teams are snapping up these type of players, whilst we are left with a player (albeit young) who won't feature until at least October. We have essentially not improved at all (yet).

Am expecting PJ and Clegg to get there act together and sign some players soon. However, if Scotland signs a new contract, we do not want/need Fuller. It would be a return to the injury prone has been policy of last season - which even PJ had to admit - failed.

So...two things I didn't want to happen this summer:

1) Ipswich getting towards July without at least a keeper or a centre back signed
2) England hopelessly giving possession away time and time again as we defend valiantly for a penalty shoot out we know we won't win

Action points:

1) PJ sign up Guzan, Richard Keogh, Carlos Cuellar on a free, Alan Judge, Ricardo Fuller etc. Would cost about £1m in fees in total as 3 are free transfers
2) Woy please bed in the likes of Wilshere and Cleverley who can keep possession like the Germans, Spanish and Italians...

I think we have enough cover out wide with JET,Martin,Carson,Edwards and Murphy when he signs .
If we get Fuller and Scotland re signs along with Martin and Jet who can play behind Chopra and bringing through Murray a make or break season for him we have enough cover for the front positions .
We have Drury,Bullard ,Hyam,Stevenson,Lawrence fighting for two positions in the middle, maybe another defensive minded midfielder should be added to shut games out ?
So before the season starts we need a goalkeeper and two centre backs ,Loach ,Bramble and St Ledger not that much of a panic IMO

derby is close enough to commute to from where he currently lives. Would think that has a part to play even if we were in for him.....

I think its a shame as he's the kind of player we should be bringing in and I disagree that the likes of Murphy and Carson give us the width we need - I've yet to see it. But as people have said Derby always the front runners. I've got mates who are Derby fans and like us they have doubts about the ambition and approach of their club and about the Manager but on this occasion they have been strongly linked with a player for a long time and have got their man (i.e. not gazzumped by Crystal Palace, Leicester or Leeds). I think we would all be alot happier if we could say the same about Ipswich's transfer policy in a few days having signed Chambers and Henry (Millwall) or Loach for example. Ageing strikers don't fit the bill and we had enough of that last season, though I think Fuller could be a major asset alongside Chops or Scotland.

Oh and a shame we couldn't entice Sixto back for a season - it was great to see him interviewed last season and he had fond memories of Town. One that got away there for sure.

TWTD must really enjoy frustrating n enjoying town fans constant linked linked articles no proof or facts we have enquired or approached Jacobs or the other 30 odd players we have been linked with!

Every single player TWTD has linked the club with this summer we havent signed and Elliot Hewlett was never linked & we signed him: I'll never see the point when phil knows the club are not interested or ever will be in a particular player like D.Marney who was linked a while ago why does he still do the article pointless: I don't care if I don't read bout any player for next 2 weeks until you do a article saying 'we have agreed too sign'

Don't worry, we'll have Luke Chambers and Steven Davies signrd up by end of next week.

In Jewellio we trust.

Fuller and Scotland won't play every game, and Murray is still to in-experienced, and then Chopra goes hot and cold, therefore I would really like to see a young and hungry striker in addition to those mentioned above, or even Wickham back on a season long loan. Then we just need two CB's and two GK's, all permanent signings of course!

I think one of the main problems we all have is that we are so desperate for signings/success that we take everything that either this site site or that scum owned newspaper reports as true indications of who ITFC are bidding for or are interested in. TWTD reports rumours going around etc (and so it should) but nowhere have I ever seen a source or anyone named who is suggesting our "interest". Its frustrating but we have to live with it. I still have faith that we are carefully evaluating possibilities but can accept that with the Euros still on and many players still on hols that its the slow season. Thats why we go into a rumour feeding frenzy. Hoefully come end of this month we will see some movements. Lets have a bit more patience beofre we all slate everyone.

I welcome an update on players we have been linked with, along with a chance to read what is happened with ex-ITFC players. If nothing else it gives us subjects to discuss and to comment upon the lack of actual signings.

If 32-year-old Fuller joins us I would not be opposed to it. The older free transfers last season did not work out and I agree we should focus on young players, but that's not to say one or two experienced players can't be beneficial as well. If there is no transfer fee and wages are affordable, Fuller could be a good signing. I read that many Stoke fans wanted to keep him, and his 43 goals in 182 games (1 in 4.2) record is good considering most of the time there was at Premier League level. His discipilinary record is a concern though, I admit.

Surco remember we've also got Kourouma in midfield who I think will play a bigger part than people think. Box-to-box sounds promising.

Would like to see Fuller here, but as long as don't rely on him throughout the season, because if he gets an injury we'll be a bit stuffed. Chopra should be first choice, with Scotland and Fuller chipping in. Wickham on loan would be an added bonus.

@ Garv, when did we sign Kourouma? Thought we had only agreed terms?
