Town remain the frontrunners for the signature of former Nottingham Forest skipper Luke Chambers, according to the Midlands media, despite a number of sources close to Town insisting that the deal broke down yesterday evening after lengthy talks at Portman Road. The out-of-contract 26-year-old returned home to the Nottingham area last night to consider his next step with Leeds United understood to be showing strong interest in the one-time Northampton man.

Reports in Nottingham this morning claim Chambers has been offered a three-year deal at Portman Road which would almost double his £8,000-a-week Forest wage, although that figure seems unlikely given Town’s oft-stated commitment to reducing outgoings with the Championship moving towards the Financial Fair Play break-even model.

After talks, a medical and the traditional tour of the stadium and training facilities yesterday, Chambers asked for time to mull over his decision, with Leeds, whose takeover is thought to be close to being completed, believed to have made a late approach for the Kettering-born centre-half.

Town are not officially commenting on progress on the deal, as is their usual policy, but the picture may become clearer later today.

Manager Paul Jewell is due back at Portman Road this afternoon ahead of the start of pre-season training on Thursday, by which time he will be hoping Chambers, one of his top summer targets, will have committed his future to the Blues.

so you are telling me that his possible new boss wasn't there yesterday to meet him and help seal the deal? As a manager myself, I think that is poor so no wonder he is pondering.

haha this is stupid. he wants 16k per week and the Nottingham fans think he is absolutely useless. why are we bothering. sign someone else.

Not going to lie I have little to no confidence of Town making the signing now.

Letting him leave without agreeing to sign isn't right in my eyes, especially considering the importance of this signing - possibly the most important one we will make (or not) all summer.

If we were really that attractive to him he would've agreed terms last night. If the reports of doubling his wages are true then its surely unlikely that money is the issue, and if it is then he and his agent are probably just being greedy. But if it is not about the money, you have to ask why he wouldn't want to sign having already completed a medical.

Why was Clegg not there?

All these people who wish transfers were done so quickly are silly. Where is the excitement in that??

We should charge a handling fee for all these great players we keep finding for other clubs lol.

There is not the money, that's why so many deals fall through (Pompey 3). We are going to have to get used to (very) lower league players or out of contract players no one else is really bothered about.

The biggest concern now is who we may have to sell.

If if doesn't want to be here then just move on, if he's not 100% committed then look elsewhere instead of trying to persuade him, only want players here who want to die for the shirt

Over 3 years at £16,000 a week it works out to around £2.3m which isn't too bad for obviously no transfer fee and wages over 3 years. Is he better than someone like Keogh who would probably cost about £1m but presumably much less wages? To be honest, is Chambers that good anyway? only us and Leeds have shown any interest with him and hes a 26 year old centre back on a free transfer, seems odd if he's that good.

I can 100% guarantee we have offered L.Chambers £15,000 a week forget bout these Leeds links they are not in position too sign anyone till their takeover is completed: spoke with several sources in Nottingham this morning they all see him signing for us let's have some positivity COYB!!!

Think 16k too much. If he wants to go elsewhere off with him. I only want to see players wearing the jersey with pride & passion at ITFC.

Can people saying "if he doesn't want to sign then move on" shut up please. We are not Real Madrid or Man United. When a player we want has options its up to the board and Jewell to sell Town to them and to show them we have the ambition to match theirs. People are concerned because we've had Sean Derry, Charlie Austin, Joel Ward and now Chambers at the club but they have all decided to walk away. And they're just the ones we know about.

JimmyJazz added 12:04 - Jul 4
Reckon this is not a reflection of us but Chambers wants to wait to see what else is on offer which is dependant on takeovers (both at Leeds and Forest). This could drag on for a while yet, but if true he isn't that enamoured by the prospect of signing for us.

Why was Jewell not there when this is potentially such an important signing?
He should have got back one day earlier and got his man to sign.
Now with Leeds interested and no signature i fear the worst.
Hope i'm wrong.

How can people say we can't pay "Championship wages" when we have apparently offered him TWICE as much as his current Championship club where he is captain?
15k a week on a 3 year contract is what most players would dream of with the new Financial Fair Play rules

ChrisR added 12:21 - Jul 4
So Jewell was not there yesterday, nor Clegg as he showed up on Look East TV in Peterborough talking about the stupid Torch Relay .
Surely the top man at the club , whoever that is , should be there to meet this crucial player, show some personal interest in him , conduct the negotiations , and make a positive impression ....and how come we have a manager whose main home is over 200 miles away , turns up today , 24 hours late !!!
