Wright Leaves Preston
Wright Leaves Preston
Friday, 6th Jul 2012 20:31

Former Blues keeper Richard Wright has left Preston North End with immediate effect within days of joining the League One Lilywhites. The 34-year-old, who was released by the Blues at the end of last season, says he’s been unable to settle in the North-West.

Wright, who joined up with the Lancastrian side for the first day of pre-season training on Wednesday having signed a one-year deal, said: "It might seem somewhat dramatic, but I have only been away from my home in East Anglia for a few days and I know already that I simply cannot live that far away from my family.

"I have children settled in school, so moving isn't an option. I think it is only fair to be honest now rather than down the line when the club may not be able to solve the problem that I am creating."

Preston manager Graham Westley added: "It takes a brave man to be honest in a difficult situation like this.

"Richard thought that he could handle the separations from his family, but he has found it too much. He is a good man and I wish him well on behalf of all at PNE."

Call yourself a professional? LOL
I would bring him in to the coaching staff-his playing career is clearly over.

I find it sad that a player who's career looked so massive in his 1st spell at ITFC has seemingly ground to such a halt.

He was such a great player and he just seems to have lost his way, I really would have loved for him to have made it when he came here for the 3rd time last season but I feel theres somthing not quite right as his ability has never been in question.

I wish him all the very best though as he is, and always will be, a ITFC legend.

But he spent a year up in Sheffield. I would give him another contract as number 2/3 keeper (if he would accept it) but too injury prone of late to be considered as number 1.
Shame his career fizzled out (apart from maybe his 2nd stint back with us) he left us too early. Good luck in whatever you end up doing Richard.

I thought he would be better wroking with our team like a goalkeeper coach, I met him at the last home match of season 2011 / 12 and I said to him your worse move was when he left us to ove to Arsenal.

Come on Paul Jewell get him back at Portman Road as a goalkeeper coach.

I think as we only have ALB at the mo, I would bring him back and if we manage to sign another goalie, put him in at No 2.

He's 34/35 so still has plenty to offer if he can stay injury free.

He still has a good 2/3 years left in him, but nowhere near good enough to be our #1 or #2. He will always be considered a hero and a proper Ipswich man.
It would make sense if he joined Col U or Southend.

You idiots over here can go and play with 5year olds, youre ridiculous. Wrighty is a local boy and was great for us in the Prem, show him some frickin respect!

If its for no-ones best then I think you made the right descision, fair play Richard

I am surprised he went so far away if his family were staying here. Perhaps he'll end up training with Ipswich again without earning a salary like for a large part of last season. I would take him back as cover on the minimum wage. ;-)

Gotta respect him for putting his family before money but you gotta admit geography obviously isnt his strongest subject. Did he not realise how far it is from Ipswich to Preston when he signed for for them/have his medical/tour of facilities

Home is where the heart is Richard, the best you ever played was your first spell at Ipswich. If you had stayed i think you would have still been our 1st choice keeper, since you left Kelvin Davis is the only keeper we have had who was in the same class.

...... something a little more compatible for Richard - will some present itself !!

Richard, in my opinion, never quite perfected his game - why, I do not know - and whether he would make a top Goalkeeping Coach remains to be seen.

However, he is IPSWICH PEDIGREE, and he genuinely loves our Club for all it's current warts - and deserves to be shown respect for that, and his efforts of the past.

Wash your typing finger some of you.

As others have said, in his first spell here he was terrific, but left too early (Jack Butland please note). I'd have him back as cover, at least for the first half of the season.

i agree, perhaps get him to help malcolm webster out and be our number 3 in a player / coach role?

Mark, I don't think he'll be too happy with £6.50 an hour or whatever the minimum wage is now.

Colchester have an almost guaranteed new no.1 if they want one.
