Luongo to Sign Early This Week
Luongo to Sign Early This Week
Monday, 23rd Jul 2012 06:00

Town loan target Massimo Luongo was in a Tottenham development side which drew 0-0 in a friendly with Calcio Como in Italy on Saturday evening. We understand midfielder Luongo is set to complete his season-long switch to the Blues in the early part of the week, perhaps in time for involvement in one of this week’s two friendlies against Braintree and Cambridge United.

Over the weekend, Luongo tweeted confirmation that he was set for a move to a friend: "Looks like I'm heading for a loan."

TWTD was first to reveal that the Blues were targeting the 19-year-old Australian earlier this month, a move which appears to have come about due to manager Paul Jewell’s close links with Tim Sherwood, who coaches the Spurs development squad and was in charge of the team in Italy.

Speaking a fortnight ago, Jewell said: “I know Tim Sherwood quite well at Tottenham and I’ve been in dialogue with him over the summer. “

Sydney-born Luongo joined Spurs in January 2011 after impressing while on trial, having previously played for APIA Leichhardt Tigers in his homeland.

He made nine appearances for their U18s in the 2010/11 season, scoring three goals from central midfield, including one in a final day 2-1 defeat of the Blues.

By the beginning of last season he had impressed enough to make his senior debut — and miss the decisive spotkick in a shoot-out — as a 71st minute sub in a Carling Cup tie with Stoke. That remains his only first team appearance.

Capped twice by Australia at U20 level and called into senior training camps, 5ft 9½in tall Luongo also qualifies to play for Italy, the nation of his father's birth, and Indonesia, where his mother was born.

Meanwhile, Town's new part-time fitness consultant Steve Williams won a Dancing On Ice Olympics special on ITV on Sunday night. Double Olympic rowing gold medallist Williams and partner Katie Stainsby's winning routine was to Use Somebody by the Kings Of Leon.

Yes welcome Massimo.... i also hope Steve Williams brings the winning formula to us as well, i didnt see the ice skating but stepping outside your comfort zone and winning is a class act. Winning mentality is a state of mind as is a losing mentality.

Bring on those final pieces of the jigsaw and lets get started, looking forward to the new season...COYB

Season long loan with a player, we'd never to be able to afford otherwise, err YES PLEASE!. Everyone was pleased Klug returned, so hope they all back his judgement on this player. COYB!

Sorry but yet to get excited about any of the signings,
We got Chopra, Jet, Bullard and Bowyer last season and finished nearer the bottom than the top.
Still dont see how a lad out till October and a Tottenham player learning his trade and Watford's 2nd string keeper is going to turn us in to a team to be pushing for promotion.
Ipswich are miles off Bolton, Blackburn and Wolves, next season maybe but not this one

The 3 teams you've listed there all have the benefit of parachute payments though, don't they? In saying that though, it isn't all about the money, Leicester spent big and have little more to show for it than up.
Its about many other factors, i am sure that Southampton and even the Budgies brought in "second string" players and benefited greatly as they all bought into the team spirit.

Welcome. I hope that he has a gooe season with us. Thankfully its a season long loan & not a short term loan. Lets get behind the management & players & hopefully this great club will soon be back where it belongs.

At least Klug will know Luongo and must feel he is good enough to make an immediate impact on the Ipswich side if needed, and perhaps give us another option regarding our tactical approach. A 5ft9 central midfielder wasn't high on our priority list, and I thought Jewell said he was looking for more height and power in midfield and up front, but I guess if Luongo won't cost us much then he is worth having as an option and as cover.

Williams will be the second best signing of the summer, closely behind Klug. I don't care what walk of life you come from, if you are a born winner, and can pass some of that mentality on to our young squad what the problem. You don't need to be a football man to know how to breed a winner.

Daniel9624- it did not work for Woodward at Southampton and Clegg came in with a reputation of leadership and achievement- we'll see

Our best signing this summer will be ball winning centre mid - the defense however hapless last year was all too often exposed by the midfield.

Mick Mills Tash - Williams isn't the manager or director of football, he's a fitness expert. Totally different to Woodward.
On this Luongo fella, anyone have any idea what kind of player he is? Creative, tackler, winger, what? Without knowing that, none of us know what he will bring to the squad/team. Good to have him on a season-long loan though. At least he can settle, work his way into the team/squad, without the risk of getting recalled by Spurs.

Well have to admit if this is the mouth watering signing my mouth is decidedly dry. I had never heard of him before now and am not impressed by his record but I hope that when he comes and plays I can call him Opel Fruit.

A friend of mine is a spurs supporter n knows someone who works in the academy: Luongo is rated highly good on the ball n is compared with Brazil Star n team mate Sandro if he can have a similar impact too J.Colback probably our best loan signing in recent years! but playing in a better side he could be v useful: don't know how other posts can criticise a player they know nothing about or have seen play: I'm told it mite not b the only spurs loanee: I think the 3 permanent signing have been v good, brilliant value n looking at the present aswell as the future looking forward too 18th August COYB!!!
