Villa Linked With £3.5m Move for Cresswell

Aston Villa are looking to sign Town left-back Aaron Cresswell for a fee of £3.5 million, according to reports. The 22-year-old was the Blues’ Player of the Year last season having signed from Tranmere last summer.

New Villa manager Paul Lambert is claimed to close to agreeing a fee with Town for the Liverpudlian and hopes to get the deal done within 24 hours.

In October, having impressed in his first couple of months at Portman Road, Cresswell extended his Town contract until June 2015 with the option of a further year.

Cresswell cost the Blues tribunal-set compensation of £240,000 rising to £520,000 based on appearances and promotion after he left Prenton Park at the end of his contract last summer.

Tranmere would be entitled 20% of Town's profit if and when the full-back is sold. In addition to the £240,000 initial fee, the tribunal awarded Rovers £45,000 after Cresswell makes 15, 30, 45 and 60 appearances for the Blues, plus a further £100,000 should Town reach the Premier League by the summer of 2014.

Cresswell has so far made 46 appearances for Town, scoring one goal, taking the fee Town have paid up to now to £375,000.

Player of the season, so young and improving still - less than £5 million and they can stick it.

Let's hope he just stays!

triple that and give us a couple of decent youngsters and it could be a deal

Please god no. We can kiss any promotion hopes goodbye if we lose Cressie. JUST SAY NO. If we seriously want to get promoted sooner rather than later, DO NOT SELL!!!

Not happy with this, if true. And something else, Villa made up a mess of a transfer over here. They tried to sign up Feyenoord defender Ron Vlaar last week, they all agreed on terms, everybody thought it was a done deal, but the deal is postponed now Villa first have to sell players before they can even buy... So, would be strange if would be able to proceed with this transfer. And Feyenoord has now a player who is gutted with the situation...

uh ohhh, this would be a massive disaster! If he's to go anywhere i'd think maybe Everton if they decide to sell Leighton Baines but £3.5m in this day and age for a talent like Cresswell? Jog on Lambert

Marcus has money, this would be such a step backwards! No need to sell!!!

With Wickham, massive fee, fair enough, but no to this.

Let's hope the fact he has got house in the area and is progressing well here he hangs about.

a win win situation here. Villa get a great player, we get a great profit and this gives Jewell the opportunity to try Martin at left back. It's a no-brainer, after all, Edwards has done well there so why not Martin?

Claimed by who? Substantiate please Phil!
Imagine if we did sell him...!!

I would actually piss myself laughing if they did that! It would be hilarious! Absolutely hilarious! Build for the future...and then sell your best young star to the ex-manager of Norwich!!!!

Please Phil, tell us There's nothing in this!!

This would be the worst start to the season for me!

Im gutted that he is even linked and to sell to Paul Lambert makes me feel sick!

Scout your own players scummers

I'm praying there is no truth in this, we need this man so badly. We have such an ambitious and strengthened back 5 from last year. Too sell Cressy now only means time, effort and money searching for a new left back!

Praying I dont wake in the morning to more of this

If this happens I for one will be truly Pi*#+d off, I am absolutely fed up with losing talent before we have had a chance of getting the best out of them and progressing to promotion. If this occurs then the so called ambition of ME, Clegg and Jewell is a total misnomer; you will never get promoted by selling your best players.

Not good this would go against everything that P.J is trying to do at Portman road so I could only be being done,if at all, without his knowledge wich is unlikely. THIS CANNOT BLOODY HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's hope it's true : getting approximately 10 times what he is worth, and enough money to buy a whole new team. And when he's a dismal failure at that level, like Wickham, he can come back for free.

bluebadger ..are you serious? why not Martin? because he cant tackle properly, he'd be off every week.

Are the likes of Joe Whight ready for the step up? if so 3.5m seems reasonable, else what is the point, we'd spend most of the profit on a replacement n no gaurentee of them being any good.

we're not in need of money, so there is absolutely no need to sell anyone. however if a bid comes in and he wants to go thats a different story...

Daley, you really are one very pessimistic man aren't you?

@BlueBadger - Is your post serious? I agree 3.5 million is a decent amount of money but Lee Martin at left back?

El_Smangus added 23:26 - Jul 24
Right, a real test of the ambition of our club's management. PJ better be fighting against this, as signing Cressy is one of the best things he has done in his tenure, and the player is clearly key to the club building and pushing for promotion.

@BlueBadger, sorry but I think that scenario would be a disaster. Yes, Martin has good work ethic and will throw himself into a tackle, but that doesn't mean he is good at it (I can remember a few wild challenges and a few red cards to go along). We need Martin playing behind Chops, where his skill is utilized.

F off Lambert.
