Villa's Cresswell Move at Early Stage
Villa's Cresswell Move at Early Stage
Wednesday, 25th Jul 2012 09:49

TWTD understands that Aston Villa’s move for Blues defender Aaron Cresswell is still very much in its early stages. Last night, national newspaper reports claimed a deal which would see the 22-year-old on his way to Villa Park could be completed within the next 24 hours, however, that appears unlikely to be the case.

The clubs are believed to still be discussing the player’s valuation with some sources reporting that Villa, managed by former Norwich boss Paul Lambert, are willing to pay £3.5 million for the Liverpudlian.

Town will almost certainly be trying to negotiate a higher figure with claims of a £6 million price tag having been put on his head, although it’s unlikely that a relatively inexperienced left-back such as Cresswell would go for anything approaching that sort of fee.

Cresswell cost the Blues tribunal-set compensation of £240,000 rising to £520,000 based on appearances and promotion after he left Prenton Park at the end of his contract last summer.

Tranmere would be entitled 20% of Town's profit if and when the full-back is sold. In addition to the £240,000 initial fee, the tribunal awarded Rovers an additional £45,000 after Cresswell makes 15, 30, 45 and 60 appearances for the Blues, plus a further £100,000 should Town reach the Premier League by the summer of 2014.

Cresswell has so far made 46 appearances for Town, scoring one goal, taking the fee Town have paid up to now to £375,000.

In October, having impressed in his first couple of months at Portman Road, Cresswell extended his Town contract until June 2015 with the option of a further year.

Elsewhere, Derby boss Nigel Clough is considering whether to risk striker Steve Davies in a pre-season friendly at Mansfield this evening with the Rams anxious that the 24-year-old, who is set to leave Pride Park this summer, avoids injury.

Davies has been a Blues target all summer but the clubs have been unable to agree a fee and last week Town manager Paul Jewell rang Clough to tell him he could look elsewhere for the big frontman he is looking to add to his squad.

Clough says Davies’s situation could become clearer towards the end of the week: "There is still a fair bit of interest in him. The interest seemed to cool at the end of last week but there are one or two possibilities now and we will know more towards the weekend."

The Rams boss says his club’s price tag, believed to be around the £1 million mark, isn’t unfair: "You cannot base the valuation on appearances because Steven has not been ever-present for three or four years. But when he has been on the pitch, he has scored goals. He has a good goals-per-game ratio.

"We also know the asking price of trying to replace him. So the valuation is based on those two things, really.

"We don't think we are being unreasonable with our valuation and we hope we get something near it."

I'm almost resigned to Cresswell going, and it's a real shame.

But, we must be realistic. Town are still, in the main, a selling club and these things are going to happen from time to time. Especially while we're in the Championship. If we were in the Prem it'd be easier to hang on to our best young players.

Just posted on the other story ... so I'll try again here too!!

To sell for £3.5 is nonsense and undermines PJ and the signings he is making - but have we all overlooked why there is such a long trial for the French (?) Left Back ??

£6m makes more sense. I don't want him to go - but if he and the club are determined to part company then let's at least make good money to put back into the squad.

I say keep him and get his contract extended even beyond 2015 ! He can only improve and Phil, if he is this good without experience ... what is he going to be like with it.

Mick Mills may not be our left back all time legend for ever !!!

(sorry, Mick - all due respect to you, sir!)

Is this why Clegg left the ground on his mobile last night!?!?

This would be a terrible terrible move and would set us back 2 seasons.

We can't surely be considering this?????

Well, I'd take the money. Especially if as suggested we can raise it up a bit. I was in Holland and was pretty impressed with both the French triallists. I thought Baka??? would give Creswell a run anyway, especially based on the Helmond game. What I liked about him was his ability to tidy up in defence and *always* find a colleague passing it out of defence. Something we've not been too good at in recent times.

I may upset the apple cart here but for 3.5 + mill I'd drive him up there! As long as PJ has plans in place for a suitable replacement in time. I don't rate Cresser as highly as he seems to have been hyped up! Can't beat a player and is defensively suspect against tricky wingers... He has time to improve and would warrant a few like this in a few years maybe but would be happy with this if the money was re invested in say Baldock and a new young left back

Simple really. We are never going to get to the premiership if we don't keep our good young players. Are we interested in promotion or not?
Sell Cresswell and it is likely the attendance for home matches will drop as the potential for promotion drops. How long will it take for this loss in gate receipts to exceed the profit made on Cresswell? Is this selling the long term future of the Club for a short term profit?

Really thought we were heading in the right direction this time and was feeling optimistic about this season but if this move does go through I think all of that hope will disappear

Well I'm really glad I got his name on my shirt at the weekend, intelligent move by me, didn't consider the fact that we might sell him haha. Hard to say no to £6mil if they offer that much (unlikely though)

S.Clegg has confirmed this morning no bid or contact from Villa town will only consider selling him for a ridiculous sum 6m plus Villa never going too offer that

@Bluey where did you hear that?

6 million should be a minimum, otherwise no deal. It's not only his talent that we need, it's his brilliant attitude that he brings with him game after game. We need him.

warnock is getting old and would be a good replacement this is obvousliy why they are intrested but 3.5 million is not good enough maybe in the region of 6/7 million then we are talking but i think we should hold on to him because hes a very good young player

irishtim added 10:28 - Jul 25
Keep our young good players please. Unless we get big money & Have a equal replacement forget it.

Really hope cressy stays with us but I guess you can't blame him for wanting a chance with a reasonable premier team.
Fingers crossed he stays put.

Building a side means keeping hold of your better players and adding to them!

All that will happen here is that the money will go to pay Evans 2.5 million pa interest payments from the club.

Was beginning to think things were looking up but same old same old!!

£5m, no less and it would be a great bit of business, would not be good to see him go, time for you Joe whight to step up then!

It would be a blow to loose Cressy but no player is irreplacable.

Joe Whight and maybe the French trialist may be equally as good as Cressy if given the games. This could be the motivation Whight needs to push on to the first team.

Personally I would prefer Cressy to stay but it wouldnt be the end of the world if he was sold for a large fee. That is the nature of football.

Drew added 10:42 - Jul 25
Selling a player we signed for a pittance for £4.5m+ would be a good deal for us, which could see Joe Whight given his chance to shine at LB, with Bakayoko as competition.

This would be a disaster and it's abit worrying that PJ or clegg hasn't Commented on this situation.

Davies is a better option to Heskey, but both are very injury prone.

Good to hear we want 6M for Cresswell - but suspect if he goes it will be for less. It's going to be tough to turn down that sort of money - 3.5M is a lot for a Championship defender.
