Jewell: Plenty of Plus Points
Jewell: Plenty of Plus Points
Wednesday, 25th Jul 2012 22:13

Town boss Paul Jewell saw a lot of plus points in the Blues’ 2-0 friendly victory at Cambridge, not least the performances of new midfielder Massimo Luongo and two-goal striker Michael Chopra.

Jewell said: “It was a big improvement on what we’ve been doing, but there’s still a long way to go. I thought there were a lot plus points, especially Massimo, who I thought was outstanding.

"He trained with us for the first time yesterday but has settled in and although I know it's only a pre-season friendly, I thought he showed great confidence for a 19-year-old.

"He looks a good footballer. There is that touch of quality about him.

“We played the diamond system tonight and we’ll have a look at different systems before we decide to go with on the 18th.”

The Blues boss was similarly pleased with Chopra, although thought he might have netted more goals: “He could have had six, couldn’t he?

“I don’t know how the keeper saved that volley. He’s looked sharp all pre-season but we’re still three weeks away from where we want to be.”

All positive...well done to the lads.

Was Jewell asked whether there have been any bids for Cresswell? The fact he started the match doesn't suggest an imminent departure.

Good start. I also heard from a mate that was at the game that Massimo was great. Hopefully Cresswell will stay, i cant see him going.

PJ confirmed Villa interest but apparently the full story will be out tomorrow in the EADT (according to Stuart Watson on Twitter)

Luongo was excellent, good feet, receives the ball well and uses it quickly. He often had a deft touch or a clever take which took a man out, without being showy for the sake of it. Always available and did a top job harassing the opposition when we didn't get have the ball, getting his foot in and making clean tackles. If he can play to that standard against better opposition, he's going to massive for us this season.

I echo SouperJim's comments regarding Luongo, absolutley brilliant in the 'Xavi/Pirlo role'. I thought that our side passed really well all night and demonstrated a coherence that I haven't seen from us in a long long time. Add an in form Jimmy to that diamond (instead of Stevenson) alongside Luongo, Drury and JET and we have a real chance. I think these 4 could also adapt to several other formations. Keep Cresswell; get in Friend as another cb to partner Chambers; Davies to add a left footed attacker who can play wide or through the middle (and add goals and an ariel threat) then we have a real chance next season.
