Jewell Tightlipped on Heskey Link
Jewell Tightlipped on Heskey Link

Blues boss Paul Jewell wouldn’t comment one way or the other on reports that he recently held talks with former England international striker Emile Heskey regarding him joining Town.

Jewell said: “There are always reports. I’ve spoken to a number of players and agents over the summer. I don’t hide the fact that we want another forward and at least two other players in the squad.

“I don’t really want to discuss what I do privately. I understand you guys [the media] have got a job to do and you can always speculate, but sometimes conversations - whether it’s between me and Emile Heskey or somebody else - until there’s anything definite they’ll always remain private.”

Jewell, who was similarly guarded regarding his interest in Doncaster’s George Friend, is believed to have sounded out free agent Heskey, 34, about joining the Blues but the potential deal is not thought to have gone any further than that.

Meanwhile, Derby frontman Steve Davies, who has been on the Blues’ radar since May but with the clubs unable to agree a fee, was left out of the Derby squad which lost 2-1 to Mansfield last night.

Speaking earlier in the week, manager Nigel Clough said he expected the situation regarding the former Tranmere man to become clearer nearer the end of the week. The Rams are believed to want a fee of around £1 million with the Blues reportedly willing to pay around half that.

Would prefer Davies than Heskey, although I do believe Heskey could do a good job in the Championship!

Meet Derby halfway & offer 750k. On Heskey not sure, he in my opinion could do alright coming off the bench but Scotland can do the same job. Yes Heskey is taller but 3 yrs older & I wonder what wages he would be after, perhaps a pay as you play deal??

I think Heskey would do a good job. Look what Roberts done for Reading last year, and as much as i hate to say it Dion Dublin for the scum.
Big presence and always winning headers. Foot work not the greatest but sometimes a battering ram is what it takes in the championship

Heskey would be a dreadful signing. Roberts may have done well for Reading - but is a better player than Heskey - scores more goals for a start and not as injury prone.

Heskey would be yet another short-term fix. Bowyer and Ingimarrson really didn't work out last season and questionable whether Bullard did as well.

Stick with players who will be with us for a couple of seasons. Heskey is past his sell by date and has been poor for last few seasons.

Heskey could do a job, but we have already painted the turnstiles so I can't think what it would be.

When the talk is about Heskey coming in, I'm passed caring just a total waste of money each week!!

I thought we were building a team for the future. No disrespect but Heskey's future as a professional player is rather short.

Kesgraveblue - you know how well Heskey will perform at Championship level do you? Maybe we should get you on the scouting team at Portman Road and you can just tell Jewell who will play well and who wont.

SuperReuser :- I won't dignify your childish rant with an answer !

childish rant/sensible comment.... im just saying he may be an absolute gem at this level. I see him as a bigger, better version of Jason Scotland and if we get him on decent wages would be a quality signing. 62 caps for England and so much premiership experience cannot be too much of a bad thing.

Would love to see us sign Davies! Could be a decent striker for many years! However, if we are not able to sign him, there's no reason why Heskey wouldn't be a good signing. You don't win 60-odd international caps for being a loon. Every manager he has worked under has taken a likening to him. Although would prefer Davies, because of age, mobility and goal threat :)

Guaranteed he wouldnt score anymore than 5 goals. I bet Chopra is happy with the thought of having heskey upfront with him.

Not fussed about Davies. Heskey would be good but a bit old

Heskey is a much maligned player and although not a prolific goal scorer, he works extremely hard for a team and does hold the ball up well. If we could get him on a realistic wage, I feel he could be of good use to Town.

Think about what you are doing, Jewell.

So what is the choice on offer at the moment. We have been linked to two players.

Steve Davies - a fee of say £750,000 and wages at £15,000 a week on a two/three year deal where he will be injured for half the time

or

Emile Heskey - no fee and say wages of £18,000 a week (tops) on a one year deal with an option for another year if he plays 30 games plus.

Skill wise - there is nothing in it. Neither get me reaching for a big box of tissues so what is my option, i would go for Heskey because:

1. he will hold up the ball and take pressure off a defence and midfield that is not quite ready for a big promotion push
2. Experience - despite not being first choice he has bage of experience
3. Fitness - Heskey will play more. End of.

I am not saying, sign Heskey, i am saying that out of the two he is the better option both financially and skills. Must be better options out there.

Whilst i have criticised Phil for all his rubbish links, i do think he has been a bit light on the striker links - hence why we are all in a flap over this story.

My personal choice would be to sell Cresswell for the money alledgedly offered and buy Nicky Maynard and get James McFadden (29) and Tom Soares on Freebies. Then sort the defence out.

Need to get rid of Ellington before we even think about Heskey, otherwise its a waste of wages on one of these players.

Opinion very much divided on Heskey, I personally wouldn't mind him here and I always believ a squad needs a good balance of youth/experinnce, it's certainly got that however up front at the moment we're a bit age heavy.
Chopra 28 In his prime
Scotland 32 Past his prime
Ellington 30/31 Should still be just about in his prime but sadly hasn't functioned for years.
Murray 20/21 How much will he be used?

In my opinion we need Ellington to perform or we shold get rid by October, try to sign Davies so we can have another player in his his best years, send Murray out on loan if he hasn't played his way into the team again by October and Heskey on a one year contract.

Ellington hasn't done anything for years and years, much like Heskey. Think PJ think.
