Wickham Linked Again
Wickham Linked Again
Saturday, 28th Jul 2012 01:17

Former Blue Connor Wickham has again been linked with a return to Portman Road on loan. The 19-year-old will reportedly be allowed to move on loan if Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill secures the signing of another striker with Town perhaps his destination.

Wickham was mentioned in connection with a possible return to Portman Road on loan in May when both manager Paul Jewell and chief executive Simon Clegg said they would be interested if he was available.

Jewell also confirmed that the Blues had first refusal, although said a loan deal might not be an easy one to do: "We have first say on Connor as part of the deal that took him to Sunderland, although there are other factors regarding wages that will make it difficult for any Championship club to take him.”

Wickham joined Sunderland from Town last summer for an initial fee of £8.1 million but made only six starts and 13 sub appearances last season, scoring one goal.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough have announced that they expect Blues target George Friend to formally join them on Monday having agreed personal terms after undergoing a medical.

Another reported Town target, former Dundee United midfielder Scott Robertson, has joined Blackpool on a two-year deal.

Elsewhere, ex-Blue David Norris has completed his move from Portsmouth to Leeds, signing a three-year contract.

I was wondering if this possible option still had "legs". If the financial piece is o.k. then I would prefer over Heskey. We could have quite a youthful squad this season.

Get him in, even if we get Davies.

Wickham could occupy the left wing or 'Murphy' role in a 4-2-3-1, and come inside and join chops mid-game when changing to a 4-4-2. Davies could also challenge for this role. Would be good to have some real competition for places, I doubt Daryl Murphy worried too much that he was going to lose his place last season, as Carson didn't really suit how we played.

Connor got 9 goals in half a season in an almost similar 4-5-1 in 10/11 from that position so I'd be very excited to see this happen.

Come on Martin, get working on that new striker!

If we were to get Wickham on loan and have Davies with another CB, i will be very happy with this summers work from Jewell, Clegg and Evans. To me the squad is shaping up very nicely, strong too!

COYB!!!

Not excited bout this at all . Doesn't score goals often enough. When he was a blue couldn't see what the excitement was about. Taking 9 mill for him at the time was good business. Compare him to Rhodes who scores week in week out. Ok at a lower level but we will see the same this season I'm sure. Woulld like to see Davies at the club before the start. Glad the Heskey deal has cooled and glad creessy will still be with us next season unless villa bid 6 mill which is unlikely.

would want davies to sign. id take one loan player a year no more flooding the team with loan players does not work, i dont see how this would help us long term unless his going to let his sunderland contract run out do like the lad greatful for what he done when he was here but lets look to future not the past. up the town

Great player, great lad & definitely a big future in the Premiership, however at this time I would prefer to get Davies in permanently & hopefully Baldock too.
With West Ham looking to spend £17m+ on Carroll & with 3 other strikers signed since January, while Carlton Cole is still there, surely there is no future at that club for Baldock & a permanent move is possible for around £2m? PJ has said that money is there for a significant fee, if it's the right player.

Would prefer a striker that will still be with the club in a few years time.
Dont feel Wickham would be the answer was still learning his trade when he left and has hardly played any football since he left.
Why is he not him the Sunderland side?
Nice lad and all that but feel we need to be building a team so next year you only need a couple of new players or are replacing players who leave the club not re-building ever year.

Tractorgirls- my opinion is when I saw him he didn't do enough. Ok he's a big strong young lad but couldn't see what was so exciting bout him. He may have the potential for the future but his future is no longer with itfc. I was just saying that Rhodes is more of a loss.

No thank you to having Wickham back.Agree with jay he doesn't do enough for the team.Would rather spend the money on getting Daryl Murphy back who is by far a better team player who does more for the course of the team. Also agree it would be good to get Baldock on a permanant deal too.

i still think he is over rated, we have heard all these ''future superstar'' claims in past with other players,Dean Bowditch was regarded as such ,CW is a decent player, but has still a lot to prove. He has had a tendency to ''blow hot and cold ''and ''go missing'' ,and since leaving Town he has done nothing to show he has changed, he has not secured a regular place in a team . Players seem not to perform to expectations when they return to a club. The possibility of him coming back on loan dosnt really excite me .
