Smith's New Zealand Set for Olympic Exit
Smith's New Zealand Set for Olympic Exit
Wednesday, 1st Aug 2012 10:37

Blues centre-half Tommy Smith’s Olympic campaign looks likely to come to an end this afternoon when his New Zealand side face Brazil at St James’ Park, Newcastle in their final group game needing to beat the South Americans to stand a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals (KO 2.30pm).

The Oly Whites lost their opening match 1-0 to Belarus before drawing 1-1 with Egypt, the Town defender providing an assist for his room-mate, West Brom’s Chris Wood.

Smith is expected to be back in training at Playford Road by the end of the week and likely to be in contention for Saturday’s friendly against West Ham.

not unhappy about this..... we need him back to form a partnership with chambers if we are to stand any hope of being able to defend in the middle......

No offence, but I hope Tommy isn't reading this! I appreciate being realistic about prospects, but you might as well have made the intro "Tommy Smith and his New Zealand side will be losing at St James Park this evening..."

Best of luck against Oscar, Neymar & Hulk!

Hopefully the club wont push too hard for the rest of preseason seeing that he is already match fit.

Best of luck against Brazil and please dont get injured!

I think Tommy will get better practice in the Olympics than with us thrashing lower league opponents like Cambridge and Southend !!!

Joking apart - yes he will have had GREAT experience but .. he does need to be gaining an understanding with Chambers ASAP, and he can only do that in a Town shirt

If he can keep Pato, Hulk and Neymar at bay, he'll have no problem with Championship forwards!

@gibbo. I agree that having Chris Wood here on loan would be great but I think that Derby are quite interested in signing him.

Let's bring him back, having benefitted from the experience, and get him working with Chambers as the centre back pairing. We have got a defensive unit now in Loach, Cresswell, Smith, Chambers and Hewitt (albeit Edwards to begin with) who could serve us for years to come, so let's give them a chance to work up an understanding.
