Bristol City Not After Davies
Bristol City Not After Davies
Thursday, 2nd Aug 2012 13:47

Bristol City boss Derek McInnes has refuted claims that his club is in talks with Derby County regarding Blues target Steve Davies.

McInnes said: “Steve Davies is one we are aware of, but he is not the type of striker we require right now. There has been no contact with Derby and we have definitely not made an offer.”

The Robins are understood to have agreed a fee of £1.5 million with West Ham for Sam Baldock, a player who was interesting the Blues at the end of last season, although Town are no longer believed to be after the former MK Dons man.

Town have been chasing 24-year-old Davies all summer, but the clubs have been unable to agree a fee with the Rams wanting £1 million for the ex-Tranmere man and the Blues looking to pay rather less.

Speaking on Saturday, manager Paul Jewell said: “I spoke to Derby and Nigel Clough over the summer and asked about the fee and the fee is far in excess [of what we can afford]. Don’t ask me what that is because that’s between the clubs, but I haven’t got that amount of money.”

A big striker in the Davies mould is likely to be top of Jewell’s wish list. Jewell also held brief talks with former England international Emile Heskey but the Blues’ interest doesn’t appear to have gone further than that and the 34-year-old, who is currently training with Wigan, appears unlikely to be on his way to Portman Road.

Baldock at 1.5 would be a great deal.

It's getting boring now, its pretty obvious we cant compromise with Derby over the fee. I would meet half way at £750k but Derby seem to be holding out, so i dont see why we should keep persuing it. Lets just move on to another target because as much as i dont want us to panic buy the season is drawing near so we have work swiftly now and so we cant wait 6 weeks waiting for a players situation to develop.

I don't see striker as a priority especially at this price. I would rather we pick up a loaner if necessary. In other news, Murphy was not in the Celtic 18 for their European match.

@edmunds5

You think jewell can't wait 6weeks? How long did the ward saga go on for!

@Scribble

well exactly, Davies, Ward, Coppinger has been linked with us on and off for about a year, jason pearce for a while aswel. We can't go for anyone and I can imagine PJ is right when he says its tough to bring players in but there is alot of talent in the lower leagues and clubs who will need the money, plus wages shouldn't be a big problem so why do we wait 6 weeks for a player who may not even join.

Yeah I completely agree I just think this is going to be another one of those which goes to the last day and then he signs for palace, hope I'm wrong though

All these transfer rumours are dispiriting, but we should not get worked up over what we see as 'failures' to sign a player we want. The reasons are more complicated than we supporters are aware of.

PJ knows just as well as we do what positions he needs to sign new players for. He is operating under an entirely new 'climate' in what is paid for footballers in transfer fees and wages in the coming months and years.

What is more important is getting the best out of the players we have. It is really disappointing to see that some of our 'acquisitions' have underperformed and how vulnerable we are to set piece situations. The Manager cannot be entirely blameless in these matters.

I don't think Jewell is too old for the job, but while he is Manager he deserves our full support. If we undermine him we undermine our club.It's up to the owner/CE to decide if PJ continues to have a future with Us.

Nothing ever happens quickly when Steve Davis is involved.

I reckon this one might run into January if im honest, maybe Jewell will get in a loan signing for half a season and then renew is interest in Davies in January when Derby will literally be giving him away. Cant see this happening till then if im honest, just being realistic!

Edmunds5, I get the impression that Mr J is already panicking.
Can't think why!!

City will get Baldock for £500,000 as they are still owed £1million for the sale of Maynard to the hammers ,pricing us out of any Baldock deal .
Davies will be here before the start of the season

As we are being aware of these news, does it mean were still after him?

Great news keep holding out and Derby will have no choice but compromise.

we have made it clear we want him but not at the price derby want for him i can see this goimg on untill late august when derby will get concerned they might lose more in january window.
it may get done quicker if we show serious interest in another forward and derby think they may be left with an asset thats losing value.

I think Steve Davies will come at the price we want to pay. Pardon the pun but without other interest and not willing to play him and risk injury, Derby are completely snookered!!

I'd rather pay £1m for Wickham on a years loan than anywhere near that for Davies, Really surprised no one better than Bristol City want Baldock neither.

michael11 - why?? connor is not our future and he is not a proven goal scorer yet. why help develop a sunderland player.

You're very right mate i totally agree it's better to try and develop our own young players but i don't really think we have anyone ready to step up yet, plus Davies plays about 10 games a season because of injuries and he's only scored 28 goals in 151 games himself which is hardly prolific. He'd be a decent squad player for 500k but hope we don't panic and pay silly money.

Agree with Surco72, he'll be here in the next 2 weeks.
Once the Olympics are over lads, just think how richer and more focused ME and Cleggy will be... COYB
