Hutchings: No Comment on Wilson
Hutchings: No Comment on Wilson
Saturday, 4th Aug 2012 17:58

Assistant manager Chris Hutchings wouldn’t comment on reports that Town are hoping to sign Celtic central defender Kelvin Wilson after the Blues’ 3-1 victory over West Ham at Portman Road.

Asked about Wilson, Hutchings said: “We’re interested in a lot of players. It’s unfair if we’re mentioned in relation to players to say that we are or we’re not because they’re at other clubs at the moment in time so you don’t want to settle them.

“You’ll just have to watch this space and if it happens, it happens. But we are trying to get other players in.”

He says nothing is imminent: “Not at this moment in time. We’re always looking, we want to strengthen, we’re doing our best to do that.

"The players know that as well so and that should be a tonic to them to try and kick on — if they start in the side, then they need to keep the shirt.”

Sounds hopeful, we tend to say so when not interested in a player.
Maybe a discussion about Baldock was had with Allardyce today too. Can't believe we wouldn't be interested if he's available for £1.5m. Still need Davies for power & ariel threat.

Len Brennan - if Baldock is available for £1.5m, we won't be in for him. And quite right too.

Chopra is a very capable striker and Scotland can change a game and grab a goal when he comes on. Murray's performance today sounded promising so that's 3 players we have up top and we only play 1 up front, so I'm not sure splashing out £1.5m on Baldock is worth it, season long loan perhaps but the lad would probably want guaranteed first team football which I'm not sure we could give him.

Please yes to Wilson. Good pacey defender and 250k would represent a bargain.

Sperfranz & Edmund: Fair points on Murray & Martin, however I believe Baldock is a seriously talented striker at a good age & a really good price for all that. Scotland is an impact sub type now & Murray is still unproven at this level. Should Chopra pick up an injury, lose form or suffer any other difficulties during the season, I think we'll stuggle to find the net regularly. As good as Martin has been in 2012, finishing is not his strong point. Steve Davies would be a very different player also, more a centre forward type than a striker.
Burley had Johnson as his main striker, with Scowcroft & Bam Bam up front also, but it took the signing of another finisher in Stewart to get us promoted.
Baldock will be worth at least twice £1.5m next year, in my opinion.
