Hutchings: Davies Not Our Only Interest
Monday, 20th Aug 2012 12:46

Assistant boss Chris Hutchings says the Blues have targets other than Derby striker Steve Davies, who has completed his move to Bristol City, the clubs having agreed a fee now reported to be £750,000 over the weekend.

Hutchings, who took on today's pre-match press duties, said: “We’re after quite a few players and we’ve be linked with several, as you all know. We’d just like to keep our business in-house.

“If he signs for Bristol City we wish him all the very best. We had him at Derby, we knew what he was like, but we have other interests.

“A lot goes into [a deal] - bids being accepted, players wanting to come to you first and foremost, moving the family down, schooling for kids etc. There’s a lot that goes into it and as soon as we have any real information to tell you we will.”

Meanwhile, winger Plaisir Bahamboula, who spent part of pre-season on trial with the Blues, has joined French club Viry Chatillon.

This says to me Town possibly offered a mega derisory offer (and not for the first time eg Sharp & Coppinger), if the player has moved on for only £600k. Just what the hell has ITFC come to these days that we cant / wont compete for a player for a fee as little as £600k.

... as long as our 'other targets' don't turn out to be panic buys or short term loans then I'll be happy.

"...as soon as we have any real information to tell you we will.” Should tell PJ that then, and stop getting our hopes up only to be dashed on the cruel rocks of transfer heartbreak

Its not just the case of the fee but also the player demands and I suspect this may have been the stumbling block. Very disappointed we have lost out on Davies but shows the growing stature of most Clubs in the Championship now. Bit disappointed also that Davies stated he wanted to get closer to London - Bristol is hardly nearer to London so that was a statement of untruth. Time will tell if we missed out badly, but PJ needs to move fast because we cannot get away with the strike force we have for too long. Not forgetting also that we desperatley need another centre back and some pace in the side which was sadly lacking on Saturday.

Couldn't care less about this. If anything in pleased its case closed on Davies so we can move on to better targets. He was part of jewell's infamous derby side that managed 1 win in a season and while a player doesn't make a team a striker should be scoring goals and I don't think he chipped in enough for the money. Drury and cresswell are perfect examples of lower league business which has to be the way forward for Marcus evans tighter purse strings.

I sense a big win tomorrow! Coyb

StowTractorBoy - surely if Derby didnt accept our valuation we never even got to negotiate with Davies?

So whoever we are in for now will cost less than six hundred thousand presumably?

If only Magilton and Keane had not wasted twenty million between them on utter dross!

£600k?

I'm really beginning to wonder just how ambitious the big wigs at ITFC are? Or have we made a big mistake in going by the FFP rules this early?

Maybe those in charge at Derby just don't like Jewell and were just waiting for another club to bid so they could turn ours down...unless ours was the only offer on the table they may never have accepted a bid from Jewell no matter how much!

Town sadly have become known as the Cheapie-Charlies of the Championship and what makes things worse is that with Simon says being our chief negotiator our reputation as a club that means business, wears a bit thin with most players too.

You have to laugh. I bet all those who are posting their moans and groans about not paying the price for Davies were the same ones who posted that he was rubbish and we would be stupid to sign him.

Makes me laugh it does!!

Average championship players at best! Although if Town wanted him desperately they should have paid the money, you dont get good players for cheap these days! hopefully these other targets are better and affordable otherwise we gonna be thin on the ground when injuries/suspensions occur, How long can you go on saying there too expensive if you havent got a team??

The management team obviously wanted Davies, but the new financial restrictions wouldn't allow it. Then Bristol offered Derby a get-out clause. Perhaps Derby just got fed up with us and were very happy to get the job done elsewhere. It does seem a bit odd that we couldn't match Bristol City, but there you go. I just hope that the new financial regime isn't so rigid that when a real opportunity comes along, we are not willing to spend a bit more to get secure it. After all, it's sporting success that will bring in the real pennies for the owner. We have no choice but to move on on this one...

Charlie Austin all over again, and we didn't live to regret that one. Move on I say.

Oh well. Phil, please don't give us updates on Davies' progress, or otherwise, because he was never anything to do with us.

Like to know why PJ was so positive about an offer for a player and signing him just ahead of the Blackburn game. Perhaps someone will tell fans why it didn't go through.

Unless the offer was for someone else (Edu?)

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't quite disappointed. Exactly the player we need.
