Scott Loach insists he has no regrets that a £2 million move to the Premier League with Tottenham failed to materialise and that he remains in English football’s second tier.

Loach recently moved from one Championship club, Watford, to another in Ipswich — but his long-term ambition to become capped by England remains firmly in place.

At 24 he believes he has time on his side and his goal is to be in contention for senior international honours to add to those already won at Under-21 level.

Loach, who returns to former club Watford with Town tonight, recalled the moment when then Hornets boss Malky Mackay took him aside to tell him of Tottenham’s interest.

He said: “Malky said there had been a bid but that Watford wanted to keep me. At the time I was really flying and enjoying my football, and it would have been a great move for me.

“I think I was only 21 at the time and had reached the 100-game mark. Joining Spurs would have been great for me, working with all the great players there, but I later asked myself if I would have played as often as I did with Watford.

“I’ve always wanted to play for England and that hasn’t changed. I want to be around the set-up when I’m older, say 28 or 29, and I have the opportunity now to rack up 300 or 400 games by the time I’m that age.

“All things considered I believe this is definitely the best place for me at the moment.”

BotesdaleBlue added 12:30 - Aug 21 Good man. Sensible comments. From what I have heard, I like the comments made so far by our new signings. They sound grounded, intelligent individuals which is an important factor when building a stable and close squad, which I believe PJ is now doing.

Mark added 12:45 - Aug 21 Tottenham could have been a great move for him like Arsenal was a great move for Richard Wright! Too many England hopefuls are happy on the substitutes benches of big clubs and it doesn't help the national side at all. Loach seems to have a sensible attitude.
