Jewell: Outstanding First Half
Tuesday, 21st Aug 2012 22:37

Blues boss Paul Jewell thought his side were outstanding during the first half of their 1-0 victory at Watford. The victory ended Town’s 15-game hoodoo against the Hornets.

Jewell said: “I thought we played outstanding I felt in the first half. To be honest, the only thing that concerned me in the first half was that we were so much on top and you know that any team at any level is going to come back into it.

“I just didn’t want us to take that extra touch and be a bit sloppy in possession. We knew they would have a bit more of the game in the second half, and that was the case, it was more even. But to score a goal and to keep a clean sheet I thought was the least we deserved.”

Watford are a bit of an unknown quantity since Gianfranco Zola took over as manager and brought in a number of new players but Jewell says that like any Championship game the Hornets presented a tough challenge: “I saw them play here against Wycombe a fortnight ago in the League Cup and we had them watched on Saturday.

“Gianfranco wants to play a certain way, he’s going to be a terrific manager and it’s a difficult place to come. Like every team in the Championship, wherever you go, it’s a hard game.

“I was speaking to him before the game and every game in this league you’ve got to be at it full tilt and full-on to get a result.

“It’s been a bit of a bogey team for us over the last few years and it was nice to put that to bed. It’s done now, we’re looking forward to the next game.”

The Blues boss thought Watford’s aerial threat posed the biggest problem and felthis side ought to have created more clear-cut opportunities: “I thought we looked crisp and sharp right throughout the game.

“Obviously when Iwelumo came on they had a height advantage, with Taylor and Nosworthy. It’s an area where we lack a little, but we don’t lack fitness or quality.

“The only thing that was missing in the first half was a couple of goals. We have to be ruthless in both boxes and I felt we were a little bit wasteful and for all the play we had, we didn’t work the goalkeeper hard enough.”

As for Michael Chopra, Jewell was delighted to see him get off the mark for the season, although he says the Blues striker had been in good form in any case: “Someone just said to me it’s his first goal for 10 games but he got six in pre-season and we’re counting them!

“There’s more to Chopra’s game than just goalscoring, he’s a good all-round player. He’s bright, but like all strikers he thrives on goals and it was a terrifically-worked goal.”

Watford manager Gianfranco Zola was magnanimous in defeat: "Absolutely, no doubt about it, it is a fair result and the team who played better today has won the game.

"I knew [how much work he had to do]. I didn't get under the illusion that the game we played the other day was the solution to everything. We know there's a lot of work to do and, as I said to the players, games like this will help us improve.

"I never said it was easy [to change the style of play]. I said that the first day, but that doesn't stop me from trying and I'll carry on. It certainly won't be a bad result which is going to kill my enthusiasm or desire to play football in a certain way."

GET IN!!!!

After going for the last 4 years we have finally won away to Watford...!! Just got back from the game (i dont live far from Watford) So here goes some thoughts for those that couldnt make it....

In Sumary we were ALL OVER them in the first half. Loach had nothing to do. We closed them down from the front (mainly Martin) and we gave them no time on the ball at all all over the pitch. 2nd half we started slow and it was obvious Zola had a word with his tea and they started playing again. Considering they have 2 LUMPS as centre backs we lacked that final ball through the middle to allow Chopra & Martin to use their pace. It seemed that we kept going wide and hoping that JET and Carson would come of with some magic.... After 20 mins we started to play again and we had a few chances. Chopra missed a sitter (looked like it from the other side of the stadium) and Jet should have done better. Chopra & JET werent having the best of games and their touches let them down more often than not (still showing small bits bit brilliance tho).... The crowd wanted Scotland on with 25mins to go and finally he came on with 14mins to go. With his presence we kept the ball better and Luongo kept his cool the whole game. Lovely play creaeted Luongos chance when he hit the post which shortly followed Scotlands chance which went straight to the keeper!!

Then FINALLY the goal came and this play shows how different we are from last season! We kept the ball well and we didnt panic... Great play from Luongo, Martin and mainly Edwards..... Edwards took it round a fe wplayers and played a great ball in for CHopra to tap it in!!

GREAT SUPPORT from town fans may i add..

Loach - he clearly loves town and when he was down our end he kept us going and when we scored he was so close to dive into the crowd!!

Edwards - pure class today and seemed very composed on the ball. He looked quick today!

Chambers - SOLID!!! First time iv seen him... he was very good!

Smith - He was ok. A few moments when he could have done better but was good in the air.

Creswell - solid as usual and distributed the ball well.

JET - IMO a poor game. He doesnt seem to want to jump for a header and lost the ball too often. He needs to place the balls before smacking it.

Luongo - first time iv seen him and he played well.... Controlled the middle with Hyam and always wanted the ball. He should have scored but kept us going.

Hyam - Once again played well. When Iwelumo came on he even beat him in the AIR!!! He did nearly score an own goal (thank god for the cross bar)

Carson - he was ok but IMO he isnt strong enough to start. Some good play but we need a more solid Left winger....

Martin - BRILLIANT! He never stops... great bits of skill... Almunia pulled of a great save from a shot of his in the first half. He needs to sign a new contract ASAP.

Chopra - not a great game but thats why he is a poacher!! He should have scored at least 2 today. Worked hard but his touch let him down.

MOTM - either Luongo, Martin, Edwards or Chambers.

I'm over the moon and we massively deserved it!!!!

COYB!!!

Sorry if some of it doesnt make much sense... 1 or 2 too many beers!! :-)

You could hear 8 years of frustration lift off our fans when that goal went in tonight. I haven't heard us cheer a 1-0 win like that since the night we beat Arsenal.

May prove an insignificant night in the course of the whole season, but damn, it feels good to finally have that monkey off our backs.

Excellent three points, just need to go on an unbeaten run now with this settled side and hopefully we will stay in the play-off positions at least !

Great balance to the first team and the majority of the bench. I wont be crying if come the end of the transfer window we haven't signed anyone. Great to see youth and energy in our side. Yes a big man up front would be great but if he cant be found at the right price stick with what we have - please sign up Martin he deserves to be our equal highest paid player would cost a fortune to replace!! Hyam is also playing himself into a new contract same a Cressy did last season.

Terrific win tonight. Hyam sounded like he played well again and Drury looked bright when he came on. Scotland seems great always when he comes on. Also i liked our away support tonight, very loud, what i like to see! Another difficult game next against Blackpool and who knows, if we win that, we'll be top of the league!! I'd take a point though ;-)

What a great result , onto the next one and another clean sheet has to be the target. Also perhaps ,just perhaps we may sign a player or two this week to add a little quality in depth.

Tough place to go and a great result. Well done lads. Nice be on the right end of a late goal again too.

Loved it when WATFORD 0 IPSWICH 1 MICHAEL CHOPRA (90) came up on the live final score channel, I was thinking 0-0 ok but not great then bang!. It seems we controlled the game tonight and it strikes me that there is no big time Charlie's and everyone is pulling in the same direction which is important if we want to do well. Still need a couple of players in, still early days but things are looking promising, its great too have a solid back five as well. Well done PJ and staff who are clearly working well with a young highly motivated group of players, lets hope we can keep this going.

What a cracking result. Sounded like we played very well. Just delighted, to hear the passion on the radio of our fans and to score in the 90 mins that's real football for a real football club! Lets continue this promising start. COYB

So happy! We've beaten Watford!

Sounds like we're controlling games with patient possession football, and tonight it sounded like we were creating good chances every time we went forward. We just need to be a bit more clinical.

Also very very nice to know we've got two players that can change games from the bench in Drury and Scotland.

Blackpool will be tough. But there will be little expectation or pressure on us - I think that's helped us so far - so we have nothing to lose. Let's attack them!

Fantastic to outplay them for as long as we did and get the winner! I was jumping around the front room like a nutter when Chops scored :D Also heard from all over the place the Town support was as dominant as the team so well done all those that made the trip!

Well done!Even before Colchester game saw signs of improvement and this has continued making it 5 games unbeaten since Southend. Now 4th in table.
Have felt a bit sorry for PJ in his transfer efforts, and could have had more support from ME and the Major .I feel the close season expenditure for players of some £3/400k is similar to 24 years ago when we bought David Linigham from Shrewsbury for £300k and David Hill from Scunthorpe for £80,000.
Isn't it a bit much to expect a Manager to gain promotion when expenditure is the same as a quarter of a century ago;time to pull your fingers out gents and stop pussyfooting around re transfers as you have been for most of Pj's tenure.

From The Guardian....great to see

Ipswich were excellent. Against a side they had not beaten in 15 attempts, a miserable run stretching back to 2004, Paul Jewell's team were sharp, neat and passed the ball expertly, with Lee Martin and Massimo Luongo outstanding in midfield.

Great to see that we have dominated the 2 league games this season already, with small squads and what can be said as against a strong team and our bogey team (tough games). Looks like we need to practice our shooting with only 4 of our 14 attempts on goal on target. With some decent squad players we are looking like a good young team again COYB. x

Enjoyed the report dreblue. Good to get a fans view, even if you were half cut!

Great result. How nice to stick in last minute winners against other teams - lets be honest, we've been the other team too many times.

Am I getting carried away to think we're a couple of players away from a v decent play off challenging squad? Small bit worried we're not been linked with anyone, as I feel we should strengthen in defence and up front.

We'll enjoy the moment though - super result. Bring on Blackpool! COYB!

In the 89th minute we were 17th in the table and a minute later we had jumped to 4th!

Whilst a great start to the season for the team when you look at the squads of a large number of other championship clubs I worry as our squad is so weak in comparison. As the season progresses and first team players pick up injuries and suspensions we will lose that balance and we have little depth in quality to freshen up and bolster the first team.

Get those who deserve new contracts signed up asap and get at least 3 players in to supplement our attack and defence. Simples!
