Jewell Pays Tribute to Fantastic Support
Wednesday, 22nd Aug 2012 06:00

Boss Paul Jewell has paid tribute to the 1,426 Town fans who made the trip to Watford for last night’s 1-0 victory over the Hornets. The Blues’ 15-game Watford hoodoo was finally ended by Michael Chopra’s 90th-minute goal.

Jewell said: “What a support on a Tuesday night, it was absolutely fantastic to see and doesn’t half give the players a fantastic lift.

“I think the supporters can see that the players are all as one and a big thank-you from everybody, from the playing staff and the coaching staff, to those people who have come here tonight. It just shows their commitment to the club.

“We’re only two games into the season but it’s nice for them to go home and look forward to going into work tomorrow.”

He says the team has made significant progress in recent weeks: “We started pre-season very slowly. We played well at Cambridge, then we were hopeless against Southend and Luton, and then since the Colchester game we’ve really picked it up.

“We’ve passed the ball really well and I’ve enjoyed watching us, and you can tell that the players are enjoying playing football.

“We’re only two games into the season and we know it’s a very, very difficult league. We’re not the biggest squad in the world, but we’re a unit and we’ve got a lot of unity and we want to move it forward.

“In training things have slowly come together. I know we need new players to add to the squad and no one’s working harder than the owner and me to try to bring those new players in.

“That will continue because we know we want to help the group that we’ve got by adding quality players.”

wont be long floridaboy, i wonder how many of the jewell out brigade actually hope to see us lose so jewell gets the boot? Anyone who wants to see us lose a game is not a town supporter imo.

Of all the town managers and our proud history we have never taken all three points of watford at vicarage road under floodlights, Well done to Jewell , coaching staff and the players and of course the 12th man, our brilliant away support........COYB

Well done to the away following, sounded brilliant on the radio and must have helped to spur the players on

A great win against an unpredictable Watford. Team is playing well, confident and winning! Its brilliant to see us retaining possession far better than in recent years.

These were two difficult opening fixtures and we have shown great promise. Great to see Hyam & Luongo playing well.

He's right, the support was fantastic last night. In particular, I thought the sizeable group of younger fans at the back of the stand were absolutely excellent. They outsung the home fans all game and unified the Town support who joined in with them. It made for a fantastic atmosphere and it was brilliant to see a much maligned group of passionate supporters still making their support count.

Just imagine if they had listened to the ridiculously harsh and over-the-top criticism directed at them not so long ago by the "official supporters club" chairperson. It would have been football in a library last night and our players would have not have got the boost which so clearly made an impact on their performance. But then I suppose the individual in question would have no doubt found their support last night "foul and abusive" and would have preferred them ejected from the stadium. At least PJ seems to be opposed to this attempt to cleanse our fanbase and turn it into a "sit down keep quiet and be nice" club, strictly for the middle classes.

"the owner and me are trying to bring new players in". Interesting, looks like the writing is on the wall for Cleggers!

Our fans were absolutely superb last night. It's testament to the loyalty of our supporters that we could still take that many fans to that horrid little ground that has brought us nothing but misery and disappointment in so many years. I mentioned at the time on Twitter that we were outclassing Watford everywhere last night - both on the pitch and in the stands.

In the last couple of seasons it was us conceding the last minute goals.

It's great to see the lads maintaining their energy and concentration until the final whistle.

The win meant a lot to a certain Mr Loach (who received a fair bit of abuse from the watford fans on Twitter after the game for his celebration in front of us at the final whistle)

Was good to see PJ come down and give us all a round of applause - and also to the lady who sat behind me who clobbered me in the back of the head when we scored! It still hurts, but I can share her excitement...

EIEIEIO.....COYB!

What was most reassuring last night was just how solid our defence looked. They succeeded in making the far-from-toothless Watford forward line completely ineffective. And our new goalkeeper really never needed to make a serious save... This is very encouraging.

1,400 odd fans for an away championship side is just fantastic, we've got a fan base to be proud of. This team we've got is the most fit, energetic and hard working i've seen us have in a long time too!

Hearing the Town supporters on the radio during the game was simply fantastic. A massive thank you to those that went for reminding me why I support Town.

^^ Exactly, you could almost guarantee we would concede in the kast minute last season. In fact our whole defence has always been a shambles up until now. Really impressed with Chambers and love how passionte Loach is in goal. Was a immense atmosphere last night.

I think our youthful midfield is the answer; they're energetic and committed, and even with a small squad it seems they are fighting for their place in the starting line up. No panicing in sight, just nice passing football. All in all a very successful trip to what was a hole if I'm honest!

Get Scotland on a little earlier as well I'd say.
