Town Boss Looking For Right Characters
Friday, 24th Aug 2012 06:01

Town boss Paul Jewell says bringing players with the right character into the club is important as he looks to build on the Blues’ promising beginning to the season. That start has been based on a close-knit team spirit which has developed at the club in recent months.

Jewell said: “We need to bring the right characters in, the right type of person. You try and do as much homework as you can on people, but they’ve got to buy into what we’re trying to do, not the other way around.

“We don’t want people coming here to do us a favour. We’ve had loan players here in the past who have been here for part of the season and that’s difficult.

“If we can get players who are committed for the season, I think that’s a bit different from players who are here window to window.

“It might not always be possible and we’re still trying to buy players as well, bring players in permanently.

"But whatever we do, it will be with the best intentions, we’re not just going to take players because we need bodies. We do need bodies but we need them to be the right ones as well.”

Guirane N’Daw is likely to complete his season-long loan move from St Etienne later today with Jewell still in the hunt for two more signings before the transfer window closes, with a centre-half and a big striker in his sights.

Some of yesterday’s papers linked Reading frontman Simon Church with a loan move to Portman Road but Jewell wouldn’t comment on that situation: “We’ve agreed with St Etienne, so I think I’m entitled to speak about that. I wouldn’t want to jeopardise anything [else] that might or might not happen, but we are in for good players.”

slowly but surely the mess left by that clown keane is being sorted. i would love to know how much money was wasted on his buys only one good one (martin). i think keane put us back by 4 - 5 seasons i.e evens being less likely to dig deep.

Marcus Evans must have laid out a fortune by paying off all these players contracts ????
No wonder he is very careful how his money is being spent this season !!!!!!

I am guessing that the kind of, ahem, 'character' Bullard brought to the club has taught us ALL a lesson! I am really VERY encouraged to hear the noises out of PR at the moment. Maybe, just maybe we've learnt some crucial lessons and are moving forward to a time of stability and, who knows, perhaps even some consistency and success!
I have sometimes had my doubts about PJ's abilities and yet it sometimes seems as if he could be turning a corner and starting to look like the right man at the right time for our club...
Dare I start to get some real optimism for this season - hang on, it's too late - I already have it!!!!!
COYB... :)

bluey123 - before you start your dribble smith, hyam and carson were already at the club.
yes i had forgotton about edwards so thats 2 out of how many.
p.j 's only bad buy was bullard but lets face in every supporter wanted him here and if the club had not got him in we would have been shouting about a lack of ambition. yes p.j did get a few old timers in to steady the ship on 1 year contracts and loans we lost nothing.
lets talk about other things keane buggered up rhodes, klug, leadbitter, priskin and helping to keep sunderland afloat by taking all there ressies on loan.
so keep your gob shut having a go at others.

The 'right characters' story seems to come round every so often under all managers.

Keane spent nearly £11M on transfer fees alone and the only saleable asset he left us was Martin (who, let's not forget, was shipped out on loan to Charlton by Keane and retrieved by Jewell). If you add in the Rhodes sale, I reckon Keane's poor transfer decisions cost this club about £15M plus considerable wages.

As for Jewell's purchases, if you take out the loans and free transfers I'd argue they were all good value for money: Cresswell, Drury, Emmanuel-Thomas, Chopra for about £3M combined. This summer: Loach, Chambers and Hewitt for around £500K is shrewd business.

Oh dear Bluey123, your rants aren't even factually correct . Carson was first given a start by Jewell, not Keane, and are we talking about the same Lee Martin who RK effectively kicked out of the club by loaning him to Charlton, thus destroying his confidence, only to have it restored by PJ?

By the way Bluey123, great to see your positive and supportive news post congratulating the team on their fantastic win at Watford on Tuesday night.

Oh no, wait a minute...............
