Town crashed out of the Capital One Cup at the second round stage after Carlisle came from behind to beat the Blues 2-1 at Brunton Park. Town went in front via Massimo Luongo’s first career goal in the first half, Mark Beck equalised right on time for the Cumbrians and David Symington, like Beck a second half sub, netted the winner in extra-time.

Boss Paul Jewell made one change to his starting line-up with Josh Carson returning to the side in place of Luke Hyam, who missed out with a hamstring injury. Youngster Byron Lawrence was added to the bench.

Scott Loach was the first of the keepers called into action, punching a cross from Matty Robson clear after Carlos Edwards had given the ball away, not the first time the Blues had surrendered possession in the opening stages.

The home team were looking the more threatening side and on 12 Carson did well to intercept as Danny Cadamarteri tried to find James Berrett inside the area.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas hit Town’s first significant shot a minute later, the ball striking Carlisle centre-half Peter Murphy, wrong-footing keeper Adam Collin but beating his left post.

It had been a scruffy start from Town, typified by Aaron Cresswell’s 30-yard backpass which was nowhere near keeper Loach and went out for a corner. While the Cumbrians prepared to take the flagkick, Jack Ainsley replaced Carlos Edwards, who appeared to have suffered a groin injury.

Carson shot well wide from distance on 19 with the game still to really get going in front of a small Brunton Park crowd with the game being played in a pre-season atmosphere.

Town should have gone ahead in the 21st minute after Lee Martin skipped past a couple of defenders on the edge of the area following an Ainsley throw on the right. The former Manchester United man found Carson breaking in from the left but the Northern Irishman’s shot was blocked by Collin. Drury whipped the ball back in but the danger was cleared.

Carlisle’s Mike Edwards was booked for a foul on Martin in the 22nd minute with the Blues now well on top and dominating possession.

In the 24th minute, they went in front. Michael Chopra swept the ball wide to Emmanuel-Thomas on the right, the ex-Arsenal man cut in and when he was unable to find the space to shoot, laid it off to Massimo Luongo a couple of yards outside the area and the on-loan Spurs man lashed home his first senior goal.

Town were keeping the ball for long spells by this stage but on the half hour Robson sent in a cross from the left which Cadamarteri headed not far over the bar.

Two minutes later, after the Blues had needlessly given the ball away - a habit which had become less frequent as the half had worn on — Robson broke but shot wide. The Carlisle left midfielder saw a header saved by Loach in the 33rd minute but was penalised for a push on Ainsley.

Robson was proving the home side’s most threatening player and on 35 another counter-attack down the left eventually led to ex-Everton and Bradford man Cadamarteri hitting a shot which was blocked.

A Town counter-attack ought to have led to their second goal two minutes later. A Carlisle shot from distance cannoned off a defender to Martin, who sent Chopra away. The Blues frontman beat Murphy and hit a low shot to Collin’s right, which the keeper did well to save.

Berrett was yellow-carded for a foul on Luongo in the 43rd minute, Chambers feeling he ought to have been awarded a penalty after being felled by Murphy as the freekick drifted into the box. Referee Scott Mathieson wasn’t interested.

In injury time, Chopra curled a shot over the bar from 25 yards after a long spell of Blues possession. Soon after, the half-time whistle went.

Town were well worth their lead at the break with Carson and Chopra both having had chances they ought to have scored in addition to Luongo’s first career goal.

After a slightly nervy start, the Blues had passed the ball around slickly for the most part, creating enough openings to have had the game won. When Carlisle had got the ball they had had their moments, although with Loach yet to be seriously tested.

The Blues keeper was called into action five minutes after the break, claiming Edwards’s header from Chris Chantler’s ball in from the left.

The visitors had starting the second period brightly and in the 54th minute Berrett hit a shot across the face of Loach’s goal after more good work from Robson.

On 57, after a couple of Town corners, Drury flicked a low ball into the six-yard box and Chopra tried to stab goalwards, keeper Collin blocking.

An Emmanuel-Thomas freekick on the right was knocked on by a combination of Chambers and a defender on the hour, Carlisle sub Madden clearing from inside the six-yard box.

Martin almost played in Chopra in the 64th minute but keeper Collin was out quickly to claim. A minute later, Jason Scotland replaced Carson as the Blues moved to 4-4-2. Carlisle swapped Jon-Paul McGovern for David Symington.

Emmanuel-Thomas played a clever ball for Ainsley in the 69th minute, the substitute cutting the ball back but a Carlisle boot prevented it from crossing the six-yard box.

Town had been less dominant in the second half with the home side having more of the ball as they looked to get back in the game, although with the Blues more of a threat in the final third.

Sub Symington’s deflected shot forced Loach to save down to his right as the game moved into its final quarter hour with Carlisle still very much in the hunt and with the home crowd starting to get behind them. On 78, Ryan Stevenson replaced Emmanuel-Thomas, who had had his moments but having been quieter after the break.

Scotland forced Collin to save well on 80, then from the corner Chambers and then Chopra both had efforts blocked. Cresswell wasn’t far away from a 30-yard strike after another corner had been cleared, the ball flying past Collin’s right post.

On 86 Cresswell cleared a dangerous long throw from the left, then Carlisle sub Madden headed over as the home side tried to turn the screw in the final minutes.

Two minutes later, another sub, Mark Beck, shot wide from the edge of the box when he ought to have done better.

The Cumbrians continued to push and in the final minute of normal time Symington crossed from the right and Madden stabbed wide when he should at least have tested Loach.

The goal the home side had been threatening to score during the final minutes came just as the board for injury time was raised. Robson whipped over a cross from the left and Beck headed home.

Beck had another chance before the end, again from a Robson cross but the ball was deflected out for a corner. Not long after, the referee’s whistle signalled extra-time.

The Blues had been deservedly in front having created enough opportunities in the first half to be more than the single goal in front.

After the break, the home side made more of an impression in terms of possession but Town keeper Loach was rarely over-tested until the final minutes when the Blues sat back, invited Carlisle on to them and eventually paid the price from one of a number of decent chances created by the Cumbrians.

The home side started the additional half an hour the way they had ended the scheduled 90 minutes, Robson crossing from the left and Madden heading over the crossbar.

Chambers had a header cleared from the six-yard box after he had beaten keeper Collin to the ball on 94, then Drury shot wide.

The home side went in front in the 99th minute. Beck played in fellow sub Symington round the outside of Cresswell, who had been caught in possession, and the 18-year-old hammered a low shot across Loach and into the net.

At the other end, Drury headed wide after a freekick had been cleared to the edge of the area, then Scotland failed to find Chopra with a lay-off inside the box. Town got no nearer than that to equalising before the turnaround with the home side looking the more determined outfit.

Goalscorer Symington blasted a strike across the face of goal four minutes into the second half of extra-time, the ball catching a defender on its way out.

Smith headed a corner from the right into the ground but wide on 111, then Symington, who was giving Cresswell a very tough evening, crossed low and Smith cleared at the edge of the six-yard box.

Symington forced Loach into a not overly convincing save down to his left in the 117th minute after Martin had lost the ball as the Blues looked to break forward.

After a minute of injury time at the end of extra-time, referee Scott Mathieson brought to a close yet another disappointing Town League Cup night.

Town, who should have had the game won at half-time, were, as so often, the architects of their own downfall. The Blues invited pressure late on during normal time and Carlisle eventually took one of several opportunities they had created.

The goal gave the home side the impetus going into extra-time and the Blues never really recovered, another error leading to the Cumbrians’ winner.

After Saturday’s heavy loss at Blackpool, manager Paul Jewell’s mood is unlikely to have been improved much by the manner in which his side threw this game away.
