Jewell: We're Not Tough Enough
Tuesday, 28th Aug 2012 23:10

Town manager Paul Jewell bemoaned his side’s inability to see out tough periods in games after their 2-1 extra-time Capital One Cup defeat at Carlisle.

Jewell said: “It was hugely disappointing. We controlled the game in the first half. The chances we’ve missed, we should have put the game behind us.

“We’re not a team that can see out tough periods in games. One long ball over the top, a cross comes in and it’s a goal.

“We didn’t pass the ball well enough in the second half and it showed our frailties. We need some power and we need a bit of bite in the team.

“You start to think you’re making progress and when we get it down and pass it we’re nice. But when it becomes a little bit physical, a little bit not as pretty as it should be, we haven’t got enough people in the group who can see those out.”

He felt his team ought to have had the game won before the break: “In the first half we were in control of the game, Chops has had a one-v-one, Josh has had a one-v-one. Goals change games.

“We’re not ruthless enough all over the pitch. It’s all right people talking about passing the ball and pretty football, that’s OK, but you’ve got to earn that right and too many of us don’t [earn that right].

“Some of them think they’ve arrived, some of them think they’re good players because people have been saying nice things about them. The last two results should be a wake-up call to them.

“This is a fantastic football club but we have to do the things that good teams do, which is scrap and fight and see ourselves through tough times, not just in seasons, in games.”

As at Blackpool, he thought his side only played sporadically during the game: “We’re playing games for periods and patches. A bit like on Saturday. For the first half hour there was nothing in the game, then we gave a goal away.

“The second goal [tonight], I don’t know what’s going through Cressy’s mind. Again, I don’t think Scott Loach has had any real saves to make, but we look vulnerable when we come under pressure.”

On top of the result, there was more bad news with three members of his currently small squad having injuries: “Luke Hyam has a hamstring and Carlos hurt his groin early on. Josh Carson got a little bit of a tight hamstring. With the long journey we’ve got, it’s not ideal to have extra-time.

“We’re stretched right to the limit. Luke felt his hamstring late on against Blackpool and he hasn’t trained since then.”

Why was JET playing if he's been so lacklustre in the last 3 games?

What's better way to bounce back from a humiliation than by playing a lower league side with a full strength side...

Wait a minute...

Not good enough! 6 games and 3 days Jewell...it's looking bleak....

What utter garbage Jewell talks. Let's turn the team into Wimbledon of old then shall we! This is his team and yet again he makes excuses game after game, now season after season. Wake up Jewell and realise you are past it as a manager, do the right thing and walk.

If you want to see a team pass it well look at Swansea Jewell!! and they get behind the defence, their team looks very fit and they all work 100% for each other, movement on and off the ball. Your becoming boring now Jewell, shut up and show the lads a video of Swansea and try to be more inspirational on the touchline.

Which is why N'Daw has been brought in and if Taylor come in up front, he is a Paul Dickov type of player, never giving up and adding that bite to the team

Jewell, you bought or loaned some of these players, you train them, you pick the team, you give out so called tactics and most of all you motivate them (or not)...get it sorted or do the decent thing !!!

Very disappointed, mediocre performance as ever.

I just wonder that if we're not good enough to beat Carlisle are we good enough to beat teams in our own league.

The issue is we need a quality centre, a quality striker, centre midfielder and in-and-out winger. We don't score enough, but also we dont keep clean sheets often enough!

spot on TimmyH, whats the point passing and having no direction to it. Swansea pass with purpose, we pass like there is no goal to aim for scoring in.
Basics of football is getting goals not playing hot potato with the ball for 90mins

ipswich61, i know Jewell is boring me a bit now with the same excuses and i'm off now to change my Huddersfield prediction. I said 3-1 to Ipswich...more like the other way round now the way i look at it. Also i heard that we have had bids accepted for Boyd & Taylor.

Throughout the team we are very poor, I am afraid that we are going nowhere with the current Manager and his coaches, regretfully I now feel it's time for Paul to step down, he has had enough time in my opinion and the players need some better leadership, I am hoping that during tomorrow's inquest with Mr Evans, that he does the honourable thing, otherwise I believe we are in for a very long season.

Hate to say this but how much longer are we going to have to listen to PJ's lame excuses....it's his team, they are his players, its our club though.
I am extremely concerned ...is ME as well?

Unfortunately this is the same old waffle from Jewell and whilst I don't want him to go yet he is now skating on very thin ice. The post match comments from the Manager are repeats and nothing is done to remedy the situation. If we do not get the players in we need before Saturday, and we need 3 of them at least as most of us can see, then I fear the worst against Huddersfield. Tonights injuries have really exposed our paper thin squad which is another reason why we must get new players in. I am really beginning to wonder if Evans does not trust PJ with funds and if this is the case then the future looks bleak for PJ. The clock is ticking in more ways than one and I just hope the Posh boys link is true and Murphy arrives together with a Shittu type centre back - I can dream - this is Ipswich Town after all. Now off to bed for another sleepless night.

I read that Marcus Evans was handling todays bids and so Iwould have thought also the loan bid for Murphym Now this maybe bacause Jewell was at Carlisle but maybe he is spending his money on players for the next manager?

Thing is its taken Swansea 3 managers and god knows how many years to play that brand of football. We seem to have been at least trying to play the right way for 18months now, subtract from that heading down the wrong path, i.e. Bowyer, Ingmarsson, Bullard, Ellington etc etc
We have essentially been heading the right way for about 6 weeks! It is going to take time for this YOUNG team to develop together and become a TEAM, they and PJ must be given time, or else we sack him and start on the same treadmill all over again!
