Deal for Duo Could Be Revived
Thursday, 30th Aug 2012 12:24

Town’s contract offers to Posh pair Paul Taylor and George Boyd were a long way from the terms they were after, according to reports in Peterborough. The duo were at Portman Road for talks, the traditional tour of the facilities and to pass medicals yesterday, but late in the evening informed the club via the agent they share that they would not be accepting their deals.

We understand that the move could still be revived before Friday's deadline but it would appear that the Blues would have to offer significantly improved terms in order to land the players.

Posh are keen for the duo to move on for the fee believed to be somewhere in the region of £1.75 million to £2 million before the transfer window closes with other clubs also believed to be interested, Brighton having been linked.

Town boss Paul Jewell, whose usual Thursday press conference was moved to Friday yesterday afternoon, is continuing his search for new signings, including alternatives to Boyd and Taylor, as he looks to add several players to his squad before Friday’s deadline.

Regardless of the failure to secure the Peterborough pair, midfielder Ryan Stevenson will complete his Blues exit prior to the transfer window closing.

The 28-year-old’s contract is set to be terminated in order to ease a switch back to a Scottish club — he was in talks with Motherwell yesterday but other sides are also interested — with his wife believed not to have settled in Suffolk since the midfielder’s £50,000 move from Hearts in January. Stevenson is also keen to play more regularly than he has at Town.

We have to repsect our wage structure and the fair play rules. The benefits of that policy will come in time.

I am just curious to know what we pay and what they expect

Boyd and Taylor can do one, greedy greedy b*****d's.
Why do we want players who's only motivation is their pay cheque at the club? If they were worth the money they think they are why are Peterborough where they are?

I havent commented since the end of last season, just been looking in and keeping an eye on developments. I was really pleased that we had this pair down yesterday and logged on this morning hoping to see a photo of both holding the shirt! cant believe we have not sealed this deal yet!
I have always been a blind optimist but am starting to lose the faith now! if we dont pull something off before the window closes i think we'll be very lucky to see 16,000 in the stadium on Saturday!
Come on Town... Get this done!!

Living and working in Peteborough, rumours here are that Boyd is on £12k as week at Posh and that he was asking for more from Ipswich. If true, then maybe Evans / Clegg were right not to offer the terms requested.

Could Motherwell not run to £50,000?

As for Boyd/Taylor I would like them here but we should break the wage system to sign them. The two players would appear to seem keen on a move to Town. Greedy agents are killing football.

Also... people are assuming its wages, may have been lenght of contract? goal bonuses etc?? .... or maybe we just offered them £50 a game and a 15% discount in the club shop!

The only thing we are top of the league at is paying the lowest agents fees. We have become the Cheapie Charlies of the championship and players, managers and perhaps most damning of all agents know this! add to that the bafoon like behaviour of Simon Says and it is easy to see why we can no longer attract on half decent talent.

I was excited about this yesterday but tend to think these players are too greedy if what we read on various web sites is true in that they want circa 15K a week. Neither of these players are worth that in my opinion and Peterborough forums are not overly worried about losing Boyd, they are more worried about the time constraints in getting replacements in. Would pay no more than £10K a week for either of these players which must surely be more than they are on at present despite reports to the contrary. If Brighton are in for them then thats probably the end of the saga anyway.

championship player are not as lucky as prem ones with massive wages and life security . so i can see why they would want to earn more as they move on because its security for in truth a short carear .

I really don't understand some people on here calling then greedy people need to realise this their job and they will try to get the best wage they can I would !!

Yes of course we are right to have a wage structure and stick to it but because Clegg doesn't understand how these things work we are making offers on players we have no hope of signing. I'm not a Jewell fan but once he has identified his target he has very little influence on a players decision to join as wages are the most important factor. Its all very well for Clegg to quote the fair play rules but we seem to be the only ones playing fair.

Why would they, they know if they leave at the end of the season there would be no transfer fee, so they are informed by their agents that clubs will offer them higher wages, though might back-fire of course. Am not sure if we left it late deliberately or in desperation, but you would have thought Town they would have least sounded out their agents first to gauge their wage demands!

I'm not saying we should break the bank for Boyd, but he is a talented player in a key position. To be perfectly honest I'm not fussed about Taylor, he'd just be cover. Boyd on the other hand could really have an impact on where we end up. Surely we have the money after Jimmy's departure to offer him a decent wage, I bet he'd repay a lot of it in increased attendance. He's the sort of player people want to go and watch.

With at least 255 Supporter's comments on the previous announcement regarding this deal, I think that it must have been time for this fresh announcement for us to add our comments onto !

Would tell both to take offer or fck off , go for Coppinger for a wide player and spend money on bringing Connor back on loan who would add more muscle up front than Taylor anyway .
They can both stay at Posh and get used to losing every week and relegated like Ward will do at Palace and Norris did at Pompey greedy players and agents ,glad Town are standing up to them

These pros are not greedy, they are simply trying to maximise their earnings from a career which is pretty much over by their early thirties. All pros play for hard cash and they'll kiss the badge of the club that offers the biggest bucks - either in the short or long term. I don't think the notion of "wanting to play for the club" or "respecting the club's values" is anything other than window-dressing as they hold the shirt up for the signing photo. As highly skilled professionals, why would they do a job here for less than they could earn elsewhere?

Pity the club have not made a statement on the correct reasons they turned down the initial offer. It would stop alot of us (myself included) From ranting & going nuts. Mr Clegg please make a statement to loyal fans.
