Murphy Due at Portman Road
Thursday, 30th Aug 2012 12:44

Celtic’s Daryl Murphy is expected at Portman Road this afternoon to complete another season-long loan switch to the Blues. The deal is not yet done but we understand the clubs are close to finalising the terms of the Irishman’s third loan spell at Portman Road.

The 29-year-old was an unused sub for the Bhoys in their Champions League victory over Helsingborgs IF last night but only as the SPL club were short on cover due to injuries. We understand he was due to fly south this morning.

Murphy’s Celtic contract is up at the end of the season and the clubs have been negotiating the proportion of his wages that Town will pay during the year ahead.

The Irish international has always been keen on a return to Suffolk with his family having settled in the area during his two previous spells.

At the end of last season, Town boss Paul Jewell said he wanted Murphy back at Portman Road for 2012/13 but felt that a permanent deal would be beyond the club’s means with the midfielder or striker on a big money at Parkhead.

I'd rather a loan than permanent deal anyway. I think signing Murphy up for a few years on big wages would only hamper the progress of Josh Carson etc.

Then I don't see the need for Boyd.

It does make me laugh, the way we keep going for Murphy. He's become like a contractor that our company calls back for the odd job every now and then.

Never been staggered by his input but he does have something to offer. Felt he was quite effective as a creator last season.

much rather have him here than 2 delusional mercenaries. As much as I'm not his biggest fan he gives us something different, covers two positions we are short of options on and he obviously wants to be here.
Probably see him here permanently next year too ;)

Good and free to sign for next season so not really a loan deal . Will add much needed help for set pieces in both areas and will protect Cresswell a lot better ,good signing

Surely if we've already agreed the terms with Celtic then we can't muck this up, can we?

@casanovacrow - Delusional mercanaries for the Posh 2 may be right. But the fact that Murphy is a loan not permanent means he keeps his high Celtic salary. If committed to us we could do a deal at lower wages.

Personally do not think he adds enough to warrant a 3rd spell. Not an affective stiker which is what we need.

I like Murphy. A player who wants to play for us! Will hopefully earn himself a permanent deal.

Welcome back Murph. At least you dont mess us about. As others have said can cover a couple of positions. Honest decent pro imo.

cromwellblue - Celtic want a fee for him on a permanent deal. The loan makes much more sense as he's out of contract at the end of the season anyway. Pay a fraction of his wage now and no up fee with option of signing at the end or pay a fee too Celtic as well. Murph also gets his full wage a bit longer this way.

Good on you Murph, a blue since his first goal after only 20 seconds, clearly wants to play for us unlike Boyd and Taylor only want the money, clearly no ambition where those two are concerned, Posh can keep them.

It does seem a rum do that all parties could not agree a permanant transfer deal after a summer of negotiation.

Oh well, I'm pleased to welcome him back

Hey LincsBlueBelly: "Surely if we've already agreed the terms with Celtic then we can't muck this up, can we?" Calamity Cleggy is poised . . . . .

I don't think he is a great player, but at least he seems to want to play for us. So I say sign him up!

Good signing. Steady, hard working, strong, good in the air, versatile (forward or wing), consistent, & actually wants to be here. Not a world beater, but will definitely improve our current squad.

Perfectly adequate if we seek a mid-table finish again.

not a great player but a good player, we are desperate for some more signings so getting him back on loan gives us an extra player, and he obviously likes the club and wants to play for the club, so no question he will give his own and work significantly harder on the left wing than emmanuel thomas will on the right
