Town's Bid Only Offer Accepted for Posh Duo
Thursday, 30th Aug 2012 14:40

Ipswich are the only club to have matched Peterborough’s valuation of George Boyd and Paul Taylor, according to manager Darren Ferguson. The duo held talks with the Blues yesterday after a fee of around £1.75 million was agreed between the clubs earlier in the week.

Other clubs, Brighton reportedly amongst them, are also said to be eyeing the duo, who have been transfer-listed as they have a year left on their contracts and are refusing to sign new deals, but no one else has so far met the asking price.

Ferguson told the Peterborough Telegraph: “I spoke to both players this morning. They both endured a long day yesterday, but they seemed fine and ready to get back to work with us.

“They are in my plans for Saturday and that will be the case until anyone tells me differently. Ipswich are the only club who have met our valuation of the players so they were given permission to speak to them.

“That happened yesterday, but for whatever reason the players have decided against the move so they are back with us.

"As far as I know no one else has come in with an acceptable bid and if that situation doesn’t change then they will continue to play for us.

“Obviously things could change between now and 11pm tomorrow and if it happens I will deal with it as I have in the past at this club.

“No deals have been done for the other transfer-listed players either and I don’t expect to sign anyone, unless we lose Taylor or Boyd. I do have plans in place should that happen.”

I'm all for having a salary structure in the club. After all it's not that long ago that we nearly went out of business because of overspending. However, we have just got two large Premier League salaries off the books in Grant Leadbitter and Jimmy Bullard (3 if you count the reduced salary of Carlos Edwards) and yet we cant afford to pay two Peterborough players???

Hmm. Maybe they are goosed. Still think they will sign. But not sure i want them to. Really these guys were hoping some other club would come in for them. Murph at least what we see is what we get. Hardworking, honest if not spectacular pro.

"They both endured a long day yesterday"..yeah we popped to Ipswich in the car, did a medical and a tour of the facilities then we sat back and let our agent do all the talking. Christ its hard work being a professional footballer!!

Or to put it another way nobody else thinks they are worth what Peterborough are asking, irrespective of what their wage demands might be. This just means they want to leave posh but do not want to come to PR. Time to move on.

NITFC, remember that Bullard left via mutual consent. We probably had to pay him at least 50% of the wages he was entitled to this year to get him to agree.

Another point to remember is that when our wage bill was higher it was probably way too high to conform to FFP rules. We have cut our wage bill to conform to FFP guidelines, why would we then go and raise them back up to a unsustainable amount?

This is a repeat of the Pompey story last year, how extravagant can their personal demands be? Has it really come down to Ipswich being so undesirable a place to be that players and families will only go there if they are offered premiership money?

Agreed Pablo. My point is that surely these guys will be looking for WAY less than we were paying the likes of Bullard............won't they????

You would have thought so NITFC but if the rumours are true then they were looking for 15k or more. I agree if they asked for 7-10k a week we should sign them but over 15k would probably stretch the budget too far

With no contract on the table and a squad smaller than my 5-a-side team I wonder if Jewell might throw the towell in.

appears to me that the players don't understand the reality of the world and the FFP rules coming in, wonder if the agent even explains to them the ramifications.

If boro take alot less in a fee that will subsidise the boro two`s wages. We get our players, and boro get a reduced fee. Deal done. Too much greed from players though. Its killing the game and poor supporters on 25k or less see these players wanting say 15k a week not year , and have a working life in football of say 8 years , its fantasy world stuff what they earn in their short career -- short but hugely paid

Current position: Posh stand to lose maybe up to £2m if they don't sell them now or in January, whilst Jewell & Co have yet more bad press

Meanwhile, the players agent sits waiting for the circle to be squared:

Posh accept reduced bid and take a £500k hit whilst Town make modest increase in wage offers.

It's all about timing and if Posh have the balls to risk a zero return out of the January window — I suspect not!

Indeed Pims.

And they can still do a job like the rest of us till they retire if they want to! Its not a short career.

By the way has Rhodes signed for Blackburn yet? The thought of him not coming to PR on saturday is the only thing making me smile today.

I keep hearing people say "we can't compete with Peterborough salarie" WE ARE NOT in competition with what they are currently on, we are competing with what the players' or there agent wants! Posh can't meet their demands either hence why they are listed and available! If they want above our wage structure limits then they are not for us, we move on! And before people say that our wage structure is too low, I give you Blackpool! They kept the same wage cap that they got promoted with into the prem and that still hasn't changed, I believe it's 10,000 a week there.

Why dont we go for the players that Ferguson was hoping to get to replace Boyd and Taylor ?????
0

stringtheory added 17:47 - Aug 30
I'm as disappointed as anyone about our lack of signings but the only reason these two have not signed is they want more money (salary, bonus, appearance etc) than we (ITFC - not Clegg) are prepared (continue speculating) to offer. There has to be a limit to that unfortunately and we're already overpaying our distinctly average looking new centre back - I am fairly reliably informed that we've doubled his Forest salary - he's now on around 17000 per week.

woodster added 17:51 - Aug 30
I heard the Pompey players we were after (from the last Jan transfer window) were demanding a 300% wage increase from us!
I wonder if the Posh players share the same agent!?

i applaud the club's financial structure but we must have some new signings. Just a thought but why not increase the terms for Boyd as he is quality and still only 26 and tell Taylor to do one !!!
George Alakbobi would be good , a decent defender and a quick strong athlete.
We must close out some of these deals - what is happening with the constant breaking down of contracts - ANSWERS PLEASE
