Delaney Joins Palace
Friday, 31st Aug 2012 13:41

Former Blue Damien Delaney has joined Crystal Palace on a short-term contract. TWTD revealed that Palace were keen on signing Delaney late last month.

Delaney said: "I'm really impressed, I've come here this morning seen the training ground and trained for the first time.

"I knew two or three of the lads so they made me feel welcome straight away. The manager's enthusiasm you can see in his training sessions. That's what I want to get on board with. It just felt right."

The Irishman's Town deal was torn up by mutual consent yesterday to facilitate a move elsewhere with the 31-year-old keen to play regular first team football.

Speaking prior to the announcement of Delaney joining Palace, Blues boss Paul Jewell said: “People might scratch their heads and say we look a little bit short [at centre-half], and we are for one game, but we’ll address that situation.

“Damien was out of the team, we had a chat and he wants to try different things next season, whether that’s going abroad. He wants to try a few things.

“I think there are one or two Championship clubs interested, I’m not sure. He was unhappy at not being in the team.

“I could see he was unsettled and we came to an amicable agreement. I wish him well, he’s a good lad, he’s always done his best for the team.

"He’s out of the team at the moment, he wanted to go somewhere else and we’ve come to an agreement, it’s as simple as that.”

In terms of a replacement for Delaney, the Blues manager added: “It can be a loan, but a loan with a view to buy is what we’re looking for. That’s the ideal scenario.”

Good luck Delaney apart from when you play us. Could Palace not have paid us a small fee? We always seem to pay players off these days.

Why didn't we wait until January or beyond to cancel his contract, once a replacement was in the building? To go into a competitive game, on the back of two bad defeats, with only two recognised CBs is incompetent. If St Ledger and Broadfoot or similar don't sign in the coming weeks then PJ is going to have to resort to panic stations again.

Why are we resorting to loans again. And why is Ellington still at the club??. Does he reckon cause jordan has gone to blackburn that we dont need Centre backs tomorrow. Also it looks bleak for carlos tomorrow.

Should have got at least a nominal fee for him, even though his contract is up at the end of the season!

Why didn't we offer him to Palace for £50? At least then we've made some money.

We "tear up" contracts so that he can find another club? Why couldn't he have just been transferred for free? What's the difference?

PJ - "We look a little bit short (at centre half), and we are for one game, but we will address the situation."
Surely Paul you have had months to "address the situation" and we have still started the season weak at centre half.

I hope this doesn't turn into a repeat of the David Wright situation? It took us almost a year to find a replacement at RB and that was one of our own...

In all fairness, good luck Damo, Decent at times, Calamitous at others.

well what can i say about delaney ,decent cb,prone to cock ups is fair .but as things go, we have been treated to some of the worse botches in the past few seasons by a number of players, who'd thought sonko would have out done delaney in that department!then there was bullard giving the ball away in front of delaney and co to make mistakes more probable.my personal favourite was when mcauley had been turned and he chased after an attacker in the center circle,he had his hands all over him but the player managed to keep ahead of mcauley and set off for the area.now mcauley could have (and should have)fouled him and at worst got a yellow.but he kept trying(bless)and then waited until he got outside the area then hacked him down and got sent off.thats what you call a cock up!some center backs need to be marshalled, some of our best cb mashalls were hunter, butcher, mills, mobray and some you guys could no doubt mention.the nearest we got was delaney and mcauley in recent times.its easier to play when you know your partner has your back and you can then play your natural game.ah well thanks anyway damien dalaney.havent forgot that you did have some outstanding games for us good luck in the future....except when you play us .make as many cock ups as you like!

I am personally glad he's on his way, his name just seemed to come up very often when commentators on the radio described defensive gaffs.

I cannot believe it has taken us years to replace our last good keeper Kelvin Davis. We have had temp right back for 2 seasons. Havent had a decent C/B since Mcgreal. Missing a 20 goal a season snce Stewart!!!! A bench which hasnt looked liking changing a game since Armstrong, Miller Et Al We are lacking in all areas Im afraid and the acadamey hasnt produced for seasons!! What has happened to my beloved Town? Owned for tax dodging reasons, Clegg couldnt spell negotiate! And Jewell has stunned me this transfer window by his lack of ability to address the situation! I am GUTTED

Thank goodness for that, no more '50p foot' sliced, backward looping, attempted clearances to worry us & Loach. I can finally sleep at night. Never forget the cock up at Carrow Rd that started the rot...

Muhrensweet4Thijsen, I couldn't agree with your post more. We never had such despair under Sheepers & Burley - even in our relegation season. We now have City's equivalent days of the Robert Chase era!!

@oscarwhiting: Your post has really tickled me, not so funny though when he was rumoured to be on £10k a week for the past 3years!!

What a relief that we are finally spared the horrors of watching Delaney masquerade as a footballer. More accident prone than a newly born giraffe, he is without doubt the worst central defender to play for Town since the Roman occupation of Britain.
