Murphy Not Thinking of Ireland Recall
Tuesday, 4th Sep 2012 06:03

Daryl Murphy’s priority is to do the business for Ipswich and resist any thoughts of a return to the Irish international squad.

Capped nine times by the Republic, the 29-year-old on a season-long loan from Celtic said: “I’m not even thinking about that to be honest.

“I haven’t played for the international team in quite a few years so that thought doesn’t even enter my head.

"I just want to make sure I’m playing here, week in, week out, and doing well. If they want to look at that then they can. If not, so be it.”

Murphy is delighted to be back at Portman Road for a third loan stint, having netted 10 goals in 52 appearances during his previous temporary spells from first, Sunderland, and then last season Celtic. His third debut on Saturday saw him claim an assist for Luke Chambers's Blues equaliser.

He added: “Paul Jewell wants to get a group of players here who want to play for the club and fight for places in the team. You need competition for places.

“I don’t know if there will be more players coming in or not — the squad is small enough so hopefully there will be and we will do quite well.”

Speaking prior to the transfer window closing on Friday, Murphy revealed he had discussed Ipswich with his Parkhead colleague, central defender Kelvin Wilson, who was a transfer target for Town in the summer and for whom it is understood Jewell had a bid rejected.

He said: “He talked to me about it all right — a few little things about the place — but he’s playing at Celtic now and I don’t think anything is happening there.”

Murphy: Likes a pint of Guiness every now and then and doesn't tarmac driveways in the off-season. Just thought I'd add to the Murphy stories as there are enough.

Hilarious Timmy, Alan Partridge must look at you in awe.

Don't think Murphy has to worry about his Ireland place. Trap can quite easily resist calling him up. Murphy would be about 10th choice I'm afraid. Think he can do a good job for us if he is used correctly (no hoof-ball).
