Jewell: We Showed Character
Saturday, 1st Sep 2012 18:23

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his side showed character to come from behind against Huddersfield but admits he is never confident that they are going to hold on to leads. The Terriers went in front in the first half via Adam Clayton then after the break Luke Chambers and Michael Chopra put the Blues ahead, James Vaughan later equalising for the visitors.

Jewell said: “I don’t think we’re ever all set at 2-1. I think the problem with us is that when we get to that winning situation we don’t seem to have that air of confidence that we can see the game out. That’s been the case for a while here.

“I think we showed good character coming back from a goal down. Huddersfield have got a really good hardworking unit. They’re used to winning, they’ve got a winning mentality.

“I looked at the stats and they’ve won 33 of the last 39 games that they’ve taken the lead in. That just shows that they’re used to winning, which is a credit to the management that’s gone before and the manager that’s here now, and the players.

“It’s never easy to come from a goal behind against anyone but certainly that’s the case against a team which expects to win when they go ahead.”

Overall, he was pleased with the performance: “I thought we mixed it up quite well, Daryl Murphy won all his headers. I thought on chances alone in the first half we at least deserved to go in level.

“Again, they’ve had one corner and scored from it, we’ve had plenty and haven’t. Murph’s had a good chance, balls have flashed across the box.

“I thought there were a lot of pleasing aspects to our game. Obviously, defensively we know we’ve got to improve, not just at the back but our defensive-mindedness when we’re attacking.

“I think you can sum up Ipswich by a 10-second passage in the game. We hit the inside of the post then 10 seconds later we got a penalty - that can’t be right.

“If we don’t score the goal and it comes out of the box, we’ve got to make sure that we’re not that easy to play against. That just sums us up.”

Jewell was pleased with Paul Taylor’s debut: “I think he’s going to be good for us. He’s a bundle of energy. He was absolutely out on his feet out there. It’s been a big week for him, it’s a big move for him but we think we’ve got a really good player.

“We think he can play in a number of positions, he’s bright and we’re pleased with him. I thought both him and Daryl Murphy both did very well today.”

The Blues boss was pleased to get a more positive result after the two losses: “I think what the important thing is that we’ve lost two games in a week, one heavily, one against a team in the division below us, and in the manner we did in extra-time.

“The question marks were there before the game and at half-time. I thought we showed plenty of guts, plenty of decent football as well.

“I thought it was a decent game for both sides, honest, trying to win the game. It was end to end, probably too open for mine and Simon’s liking but I thought it was important to get something out of the game.

“Obviously at 2-2 when they got the penalty, we were staring down a barrel and the keeper’s made a fantastic save.”

Huddersfield manager Simon Grayson agreed with his one-time manager at Bradford: “It was an open game, plenty of chances for both teams. We could have won it, we could have lost it, obviously there was the opportunity to win it at the end with the penalty.

“But, coming here, I would have settled for a draw at the start of the game. We had some good opportunities, but so did they.

“Probably about a fair result, entertaining game, both me and Paul were trying to win the game right from the start to the finish and to end 2-2 both managers will be both satisfied to get a point because we both could have won it, we both could have lost it.”

Too many hoof balls, full backs were awful.

its good that jewell knows where the problems lie, but he has said that they need to improve defensively for agesss and he continues to say it without any evidence that anything is improving, but ok result

As Jewell approaches the same number of games in charge as Keane his record is worse and he already has as many defeats as Keane and no more wins. His transfer dealings (in and out) are almost as bad as Keane and I'm amazed so many fans who post on here won't have a bad word said against him.

May the chorus of 'JEWELL OUT' now commence. It was 2 points dropped but as a work in progress it was a positive result, a point ganed , so lets see what happens in the 2 week break. I think we can garuntee a centre back or 2 the give it a game for the players to get properly used to each other in a match situation and we will be play off candidates for sure. COYB

Defensively poor again. Shocking marking on Ward, he was allowed to run down the wing when he should have been covered by Martin and at least Ainsley resulting in yet another goal gifted by poor defending.
Thought that Taylor had a good debut and Murphy did ok along with Chambers and Loach, the rest were sadly poor to average. PJ substitution with 30 seconds on the clock plus a few minutes injury time was baffling. Not good enough to threaten the right end of the Table as things stand. Urgent attention to defence (Smith poor again and Ainsley has some way to go).

Have to say a big well done to Scott'y loach today who kept us in the game. Defensively at times we were poor. Pj had made a big error not signing another cb it could cost him his job if results don't improve. I can't say I'm happy with a point, especially at home, but given the circumstances we was lucky to walk away with a point. Thought Taylor and murphy worked hard, Taylor showed some quality as well. To drop jet was the right decision he needs to buck up his ideas. We now have two weeks to get it right on the training ground. Two massive games coming up in all honesty we need 4 points from the next two and I hate to say it at home to wolves is a must win game with no wins at home yet. Fingers crossed.

Seen all games bar blackpool so far this year and this is by far the worst we have played in my opinion. We just look such a joke at the back at the moment...i really like cresswell and chambers but there is clearly a fundamental problem at the back that needs sorting. I also like Jewell and tend to always stick up for him, I'm not calling for him to go just yet as we're only 4 games in but we surely can't just accept another average season!

On the plus side I was a fan of Paul Taylor, a lot of energy and great work ethic, if he finds his finishing boots he could be a real asset....onwards and upwards COYB

I agree with Boss man, I don't think Jewell is the answer. Taylor is quality and will score goals but we were awful at the back. I'm sure we have loan deals for centre backs lined up though? :/

Positives from the game were the performance of Loach, Ainslie, Taylor and the goal from Chopra, and when we decided to pass through the midfild Luongo came into the game and we looked like a football team. Too much hoof ball to the head of Murphy which I feared may happen.
Negatives the defence, Cresswell continues to under perform and give the ball away cheaply and these two centre backs have to be one of the worst pairings I've seen at PR that said Smith is excellent when attacking our corners. Delaney departure is nonsense without a replacement. Very poor crowd as well.
Am I alone in thinking that poor Chopra is never gonna suceed in scoring regularly with this formation. It doesn't appear to suit his game. (Neat finish tho).

Taylor looks a player who is confident on the ball great first touch and creates space for himself with ease. If we are to see the best of him we must play on the deck.
Disappointed at dropping two points at home.
New defenders are a must.

Well, just got back from the game and we seem to just hoof the ball all of a sudden since Murphy's came in. In the Blackburn game we were very good at keeping the ball but today we didn't. Although i also think 2-2 was a fair result. We need another CB of course because Smith isn't doing the best, but i'll give him time to work with Chambers. Taylor had a great game and his pace showed a lot.

Lastly though, i think everyone will agree on, the worst referee at Portman Road in ages! I was right next to linesman at one decision and he must of seen the Huddersfield player walk the ball off and still gave them the throw?!

Anyway, let's win away to Boro! COYB!

Good effort, we have to be realistic... the championship isn't an easy league, the players dug in and fought back... 2 weeks of hard work on the training ground with hopefully some loan additions that will sign up in January. All in all I'm much happier than I was last week, at least we're doing better than POSH :P

I thought we didnt want to rely on loan players or did i hear Jewell wrong?

Jewell hasn't got a clue why realease your only spare defender and not bring anyone in ffs, I don't rate smith and feel loans aren't the answer as its just plugging a round hole with a square peg, I think mr jewells time is running ..

A good game and some good play going forward, we still look dodgy at the back and that`s been the case for too long now. Can`t complain at some of the football we played and too many negative comments on these pages as usual.

Obvious where the main problems lie, no point mentioning them again. But the positives: We finally look threatening in their half, Paul Taylor was the main reason for that - he was fantastic. Running at defenders is what creates chances and Murphy needs to do more of that if he's to be successful. Taylor looked a class above in many ways, and will get even better I'm sure. As a new face it was as if he brought his own game to the match and wasn't restricted by any tactics Town have embedded into the system. That uniqueness worked well. Chopra's one on one was an awesome, cool finish. I just wish we had capitalised on that momentum! Taylor and Chopra aside, I think Massimo Luongo really is an unsung hero. He didn't put a foot or pass wrong as I can remember, and has seemed calm on the ball, being the playmaker from midfield really. A real talent and it would be great to secure him long term. Looking forward to 2 CBs coming in on loan... Apologies for the long'un

Bossman - stats can prove antyhing, you are forgetting that Jewell inheited Keane's team - even Sir Fergie would take a few months to turn that around!

Having said that, Jewell's record is still not that brilliant - he is in last chance Saloon now. Going forward it seems quite promising, but good teams are built from the back. The defensive squad at present is neither good enough or has enough cover at present. Depending what decisions are made in the loan market during the next two weeks will decide Jewell's future and define our season.

same problems as always. Taylor looked good but not what we needed. Loach made some cracking saves but defensively awful again! Nevermind a couple of loan journey men are the answer, not!
CLUELESS JEWELL OUT!!!!!
