Jewell: We Can Turn Things Around
Thursday, 20th Sep 2012 01:54

Blues boss Paul Jewell has insisted that his Town side are capable of turning their season around despite a disappointing start which sees them sitting in 23rd in the Championship after six games. The Blues have failed to score in their last two matches — both 2-0 defeats — despite creating plenty of opportunities in front of goal.

Jewell said: “I think we can turn it around. We’ve just got to take the chances. You guys [the media] have sat up here with numerous managers and they’ll have said the same thing - ‘goals change games’ - and if we get the first goal then you’ll see a different side to us.

“It’s not as if we’re not creating chances, we’re creating really good opportunities but we’ve got to be more ruthless in each box.”

The Blues boss is likely to be without recent signing Paul Taylor when Charlton visit Portman Road on Saturday, the former Peterborough man having left Portman Road on crutches after last night’s match due to an ankle injury sustained in the second half, while fellow frontman Michael Chopra could also be a doubt.

The 28-year-old tweeted: “Let's hope my thigh is better for the weekend, lots of rest and ice. Gutted about tonight, we need to start taking our chances.”

Wolves boss StÃ¥le Solbakken was pleased to notch his first away win as the manager of the Midlanders but admitted it was a close game: “It was hard work. It could have gone either way.

"I think in the first half both teams were very well organised and there were few chances and it was difficult for either team to open the other one up.

“In the second half there were a lot of chances for both teams. I think we struggled with the long ball into our penalty area, we defended too deep and even if we won the first ball, the second one could always cause us problems.

“But we also had some great chances; Kevin Doyle hit the inside of the post and Bjorn Sigurdarson should have scored at 0-0, so it could have gone either way.”

The Norwegian had sympathy with Tommy Smith for his own goal: “He was unlucky there. I didn’t really see what happened, but we haven’t had much luck so far this season, so maybe it was our turn today.”

Solbakken says his first six games as a manager in English football have shown him just how close the Championship is: “What I’ve seen so far is that there isn’t a great difference between the teams.

“I think that Ipswich are in a difficult situation when you look at the statistics so far, but they could have had points today and I saw their game with Middlesbrough and they were very unlucky and they drew at home with Blackburn, so I think that shows how even this league is.”

Well done Tractor Trog - that was a good post. Like most, I am getting a bit disheartened but your post gave me a lift. You could lend some of your spirit to PJ! But because I am feeling glum, I'm going to be a bit negative with two points. The first is hardly novel, but I do share the concerns about 3/4 of our midfield being loanees and the manager STILL doesn't seem to know his best side and only picks consistently when he has no choice (Hyam/Drury last season, back four this) and ah, the defence. I propose the following as a hypothesis: it doesn't matter who we have or haven't got on board, because there are no decent teachers of defending amongst the management and coaching staff. It might explain poor old Cresswell who might have "unlearned" how to defend well over his months here. Just a theory.

ME get a grip and some PR and a public profile.. buy three decent palters
sack Hutchings, McCarthy and Williams
get a coach in who undestands football and can challenge PJ
supporters get behind the club or take a sabbattical til we look like we are top six again

I guess if Jewell were to be sacked there would still be an unworthy pay off of x amount to him. Highly unlikely that we would then take on the cost of compensation for a manager who is currently employed elsewhere so that leaves us with those currently out of work. Most of those out of work are so for good reason. The very few realistic targets who are left out there will no doubt expect a top wage for themselves and their own backroom staff and guaranteed funds to spend in January - will this club be prepared to do this or heaven forbid will we continue to limp on with Jewell in the vain hope that 'we can turn things around'?

I agree with you Sorrentoblue.....Gareth Southgate could be a good call to replace Jewell, and also he could do a Good Job with the Defence. The Bloke has played for our Country 50+ times and he was a sound player as a Defender.

No passion or pride for the shirt. Whilst management must play their part in this that is ultimately down to the players. They might not be the most talented but if I can see them giving 110 per cent everygame it' makes losing easier to take !!

I have been a fan of PJ from the start but now losing faith. Worst manager in our history, yet I still have the feeling we can turn it around.

'We can turn things around' - shows you just how much Mr Jewell has lost the plot, when he was appointed manager it wan't to make statements like this 6 games into the new season! - what he should be saying is words along the lines of: 'I'm disappointed with our start and clearly still have defensive issues compounded at the other end with the inability to score which leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, all associated with the playing side, coaches, players and myself should all strive harder in the coming weeks otherwise the future is out of my hands'. PJ talks the talk but not the walk!

I went to the game last night and you could feel the disgust amongst every fan in the Sir Bobby Robson Stand . Only two players in the whole squad stand out for me and thats Taylor and Luongo . The rest showed no passion or desire whatsoever .Since Jewell bought Murphy in we are lumping high balls to him so every Manager knows what to do . There is no plan B . Whats happened to the nice passing football from the first few games of the season . It seems Jewell cannot Motivate anyone and he just sits there lifeless instead of giving instructions to his players . If he cant Motivate the players the crowd cannot as they are watching proper dross !! Do what is best and walk away and become a Pundit as you clearly cannot manage your way out of a paper bag !!!

Lets try and put this simply.... last season we went on a bad run and had a relegation scare,
This season we have started on a bad run, and are sitting third from bottom!

The attendances are falling game by game, it was not that long ago when the average gate was well over 20k, it was 16k for the wolves game and they brought nigh on a thousand!

So you clever people if the attendance is down this early in the season, by a least 5/6k exactly how much are we losing, and it ain,t gonna get any better.
The manager iis clueless!, Clegg is useless and the owner faceless.

Now lets look at the team.............hmmmm better not we could be here all night,

I dare not think what is happening to our once proud and famous club, how to put it right, i have no idea, but of one thing i am now certain, PJ has to go and quickly, i,m fed up with his lame excuses!

If Chops did tweet that, then it's not a very clever thing to do. He's got a point though, by and large. Hasn't he readers?

I'd love it if the players joined TWTD ... it's mostly a nice place to hang about and talk town... although I'm not keen on the voting up or down thing. Seem's a bit like bullying?

anyway what does 'turn things around' mean? a bit vague, start drawing?, stop losing?, get up towards the play-offs (what we should be doing) by November? January? 2014? my Jaguar XF in a 20 feet turning circle? PJ talks better than he manages!

He would have hardly turned round and said "yes happy with the way the season has gone"!!

However after sleeping on it after feeling angry coming out of PR last night, I really do think getting rid of PJ isn't right at this moment of the season. I accept last night wasnt good enough, the whole start of the season hasnt been. But lets see where the land lies after Saturday, although without Chopra/Taylor Town have it all to do.

They have the ability, question is, do they have the kahoonas to grind out a win?

I'm sorry but i think we are further forwards then we were when Jewell took over. For one i admit his record isn't better thenprevious managers, yet when Keane left we had players drowned of confidence, very high wages, wasted a lot more money then Jewell has, were playing worse football, and much mroe unstable. yes i admit that itisnt going right at the moment and it needs to be put right, yet i believe we now have a solid team of good players who will grow and mature into better players. To be honest i think we have some quality players at this club, and that its not their fault as it is hard to play for someone who doesnt appear to be a very good man manageror motivator, i still belive we can get to the top end of this divison witht hese players, and we also have better staff then the keane era. At least now if Jewell does go - which i doubt he will, mainly for financial reasons unless results stay poor - we have a solid base for the next manger to build on. Therefore i feel much of this is over exaggerated and that we are just on a poor run of form, and i admit that i cant see us going much further forwards with Jewell, i dont feel it is as bad and as deeper problem as many of your suggest. Therefore instead of voicing your discontent at the players, vent it at the manager as it is him you are trying to get rid of. Good Day.

Very poor last night. Think PJ must eat humble pie and bring back Hyam. He must also play players in position where they are most effective ie Martin down the middle.
Must rest Cresswell on Saturday as he is unable to find a blue shirt and his confidence appears to be all but gone. GK had a sound game but has to stop the long ball to the ineffective Murphy who must also be due a rest.
Chopra's first touch was a throw on 34 mins I believe. In his defence the service he gets is poor but so his his application. Taylor worked hard.
Massimo proved again that he has the quality to create chances and win the ball. Edwaeds continues to be one of the few quality Ipswich players.
Worrying times. Murphy worst miss of the seasonfrom 3 yards.... Roll on Saturday.

Being relegated might be the kick up the arse we need! lets face it, the club has stagnated over the last 4-5 years.
